Boyle Pastor’s Letter February 9/10 Don’t tell me how to fish! Dear Parish Family Besides their role in reporting to us all that Jesus said and did, the gospels give us a glimpse of how Jesus worked his way into the lives of the disciples. The gospel passage today depicts Jesus preaching and being so popular that the crowd literally pushes him toward and almost into the Sea of Galilee. Just as he is about to get his feet wet, Jesus sees the two boats that belong to Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. Turning from the crowd, he asks the brothers to take him fishing. Jesus is clearly not a fisherman. First of all he is the son of a carpenter. If he had learned anything about a trade, he would have learned from Joseph how to work with his hands and build from wood. Second, he knows nothing about fishing. When Jesus suggests to Peter that they go fishing, Peter reminds Jesus that fishing time is over. It is day. Fishing happens at night and into dawn on the Sea of Galilee. Anyone who could see would know that. During the day the boats are on shore and the fishermen mend nets and sort their catch. Besides that, the fishing night has been a bad one, very bad; they had worked hard and caught nothing. Peter is civil but clear — “Master we have worked hard, all night, and caught — NOTHING!” Peter could not have been clearer if he had said to Jesus, “Please don’t tell me how to fish.” But there is also a surprising bit of openness — “If you say so, I will lower the nets.” The miracle of abundance that follows is not unlike the miracle of loaves and fishes. Everyone knows you can’t feed a crowd of five A modern day fisherman on the Sea thousand with two fish and a couple of loaves. “Just start to feed of Galilee. them,” Jesus orders. They do and it is more than enough. Everyone knows you don’t catch fish in the heat of the day, especially when you are tired. “Just lower the nets,” Jesus tells them. The resulting catch is a net tearing miracle. In these miracles of abundance, Jesus has worked his way into the ordinary parts of life: not enough food, lots of work, no fish. Peter is moved and frightened by this touch of God. Overwhelmed by the miracle, he asks Jesus to leave him. He is undeserving. He is a sinful man. But Jesus, the non-fisherman, has caught the fisherman. He has no intention of going away. “Do not fear. You, Peter, are a fisherman, but now you will be a fisher of women and men.” The story is about how God works God’s own way into our lives. It is a story about how we fear something or someone other than ourselves being in control. “Do not fear!” That is said to almost everyone called by God. “Do not fear” are the angel Gabriel’s words to Mary.” “Do not fear” is said to the prophet in today’s first reading. “Do not fear, Peter.” When we say yes to the gospel, we are allowing God to use our best gifts in a new and miraculous way. So it wasn’t 21:1-13 a coincidence that he and the other disciples fished when and where they did. However, a long night of fishing had produced nothing. They likely were about to give up on catching anything when Jesus called out from shore and told them they’d find fish on the other side of the boat. They probably laughed at the suggestion! But for some reason—maybe something in them wondered if the lone figure on the shore could be Jesus—they obeyed what the man said. And the passage tells us what happened! Suddenly Peter’s priorities changed; he knew it was Jesus who had spoken to them from the shore. Peter was more excited about seeing Jesus than about bringing in the huge catch of fish that they’d hoped for all night! As Peter swam to the shore, the other disciples dragged in the net full of fish. The miraculous catch of fish revealed Jesus to Peter.

    March 15, 2020 7 CONFUSED: DO MIRACLES STILL HAPPEN TODAY? By Pastor John Jesus is known for working miracles. Why did he do this? Do miracles still happen? A miracle is something for which no natural explanation exists. While some have said that a miracle occurs when the supernatural supersedes or breaks in upon the natural world, theologian C. S. Lewis disagreed. He saw miracles as personal or particular applications of God’s general power—instances in which “the incarnate God suddenly and locally does something that God has done or will do in general.”1 WHY DID JESUS DO MIRACLES? John 10:10 “My purpose is to give [my sheep] a rich and satisfying life.” Jesus did not heal everyone, feed everyone, or bring back to life every dead loved one. His miracles were a foreshadowing of the day when he would reign in a kingdom with no sickness, no hunger, and no death.2 By performing these miracles, Jesus made a statement about how God intended to deal with the epidemic of sin and brokenness in the human race.3 WHAT KIND OF MIRACLES DID JESUS DO? Jesus did not have a “stock” miracle. There was no single “trick” he perfected and repeated to impress people as they gathered around him. Instead, he did extraordinary things in the course of his ordinary days. HE REPRESENTED HIS FAMILY AT A WEDDING, and when the wine ran out, he caused casks full of water to become wine.4 Jesus’ mother and the wine steward knew they had witnessed a miracle of transformation.

    ARCHPASTORAL LETTER FOR GREAT AND HOLY PASCHA 2019 Protocol Number 01-002/2019 Great and Holy Pascha Sunday, April 28, 2019 Beloved Members of our Diocesan Family: Christ is Risen! -- Indeed He is Risen! One surprising fact about the first Pascha is this: After Jesus’ Resurrection, there are at least three times when His followers do not recognize Him! First, on the morning of Pascha, near His empty Tomb, Mary Magdalene mistakes the Risen Christ for a gardener. Later that same day, Cleopas and Luke fail to recognize the unknown traveler, journeying with them on the road to Emmaus, as the Resurrected Savior. And while they are fishing, the Apostles are visited by the Risen Lord … but at first they simply see Him as a stranger. One might rightly wonder, how could all this be? The Gospel of Mark offers important insight: "He appeared to them in another form …" (Mark 16:12). We know that after our Lord’s Crucifixion and death, the myrrh-bearing women went to the tomb to anoint the crucified corpse of Jesus – looking for His battered Body. The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified" (Matthew 28:5). In St. Luke's account, the women were asked, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" (Luke 24:5). Cleopas and Luke were still consumed with what had happened to Jesus on Great and Holy Friday. As He walked with them, He noted that they were "sad" – because they were thinking of Him as the victim of the Crucifixion, not the victor in the Resurrection.

Church of St. Augustine Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Some of the defining moments of our lives are when we really screw up. I have a whole list of these times, but one that I will always remember was from the day after my high school graduation. It was a time of celebration and I had borrowed my father’s beautiful, silver-metallic Pontiac station wagon to pick up my friends and head to the beach. Of course, it wasn’t that simple. Dad grilled me with questions before giving me the keys: – You’re not going to drink, right? No smoking in it either, got it? – You’ll bring the car back in one piece, right? What I didn’t tell him was that we planned to paint the car with some colorful graduation messages – which didn’t present a problem for me since we would use water-based tempera paint and take it through the car wash before coming home. A cinch. The problem was, it was a terribly hot day at the beach and the sun literally baked the paint into the finish of the car! The car wash – two times through – only removed a little of the paint which now decorated the car and spelled disaster for me. When I pulled the car into the driveway that evening, my heart was pounding: What is he going to say? How am I going to get through this? I thought there would be a volcanic eruption.
