ROOMS 4044, 4047, 4048, & 4049 • “Beyond Corporate:” Litigation Careers For Those Who Are Interested in Business ROOM 4048 This is a general panel discussing litigation, careers in litigation, and the types of cases and practice areas one might encounter while litigating within the business context. Panelists: Thomas Bezanson, Christopher Dusseault, Peter Kahn, Robert Krakow, and Lawrence Schaner Moderator: Tom Metzloff • “Beyond Number Crunching:” What is Transactional Practice? ROOM 4047 This is a general panel focussing on transactional law, careers in transactional law, and the types of cases and practice areas an one might encounter. The panel may consider discussing whether transactional practice varies from city to city and if so, how and to what degree. Panelists: Eva Davis, Thomas Dunn, Stuart Goldstein, Chris Mangum, and Laura Sizemore Moderator: Jim Cox • “Everthing I Need to Know I Learned in Law School?” Career Development in Law School ROOM 4044 This is a general panel about what law firms are looking for in associates and about what students can do in law school to prepare themselves for firm work. Panelists: Christopher Kay, Gray McCalley, Thomas Magill, James Washburn, and Darvin Williams Moderator: Tia Barnes • “Big Law Firms, Small Offices, and Hanging Out Your Own Shingle:” How To Choose the Right Work Environment for You ROOM 4049 This panel highlights the advantages and disadvantages of working in various environments and discusses how the career development/job search process differs for each. ROOM 3043 This is a general discussion panel on professional careers as in-house counsel. What are the advantages or disadvantages of in-house versus firm work? How do young lawyers get such positions? Panelists: John Englar, Susanne Haas,Winston Henderson, Christopher Kay, Gray McCalley, and Happy Perkins 2 Moderator: Allison Rice • “Finding Your Niche:” Crossing the Transactional/Litigation/Regulatory Divide ROOM 4047 This panel will address options for individuals who do not want to limit their practice to transactional, litigation, or regulatory. It will address practice areas like construction and employment that themselves cross the divide. It will also offer insights on how a lawyer might keep his or her area of expertise broad so that he or she is qualified to work on a wide range of matters. This panel may also consider addressing the advantages and disadvantages of specializing early. ROOMS 3043, 4045, 4048 & 4049 • “Encountering Government without Getting Elected:” Legal Careers Relating to Government ROOM 4049 This is a general panel discussing how lawyers can work with government or in areas that intersect with government and the types of cases and practice areas one might encounter. Do government and regulatory affairs predominantly occur in D.C.? Is it necessary to work for a firm that is known for sending people into government work? Panelists: Winston Henderson, Kevin Kramer, Gray McCalley, and James Washburn Moderator: Richard Schmalbeck • “Blue Skies v. Sky Scrapers:” Exploring Practice in Big Cities, Small Towns and Everything in Between ROOM 4045 This panel is about how legal practice differs by market and will address how clients, billable hours, and industries may be affected. Panelists: Thomas Dunn, Nick Gaede, Stuart Goldstein, Happy Perkins, and Thomas Zych Moderator: John Spencer • “Women in the Law:” Women Practitioners Answer Your Questions This panel is meant to address general concerns about women in the partnership and in the practice, life/family balance, etc. ROOM 4048 Panelists: Eva Davis, Susanne Haas, Patricia Lehtola, Laura Sizemore, and Margaret Stowers Moderator: Diane Dimond • “Inside Large Law Firms:” The Business of Practicing Law ROOM 3043 This panel is designed to give students an understanding of how law firms function as businesses. What does a managing partner do? How do committees work? What exactly does it mean to be a partner? Panelists: Thomas Bezanson, Michael Dockterman, Robert Link, and Lawrence Schaner Moderator: Jim Coleman • Break: Dan Bowling, Christopher Dusseault, Holt Foster, Peter Kahn, Christopher Kay, Robert Krakow, Christopher Mangum, Thomas Magill, Glenn Tucker, and Darvin Williams 3 CADWALADER LUNCHEON (12:10-1:10 P.M.) WINTER GARDEN FUQUA SCHOOL Lunch will be held in the Winter Garden at the Fuqua School of Business. A member of the BLS will be in each room hosting a session during Panel III. These students will direct you to lunch. If you are not attending Panel III the Winter Garden is located next to the Fox Center. Once you arrive in the Winter Garden please look for a place card that will indicate your seat. Robert Link, Managing Partner for Cadwalader, will be giving brief remarks. PANEL IV (1:30-2:00 P.M.) 2L AND 3L FOCUS ROOMS 4045 & 4048 2Ls and 3Ls will have the opportunity to submit questions anonymously about what they should expect as a summer or first year associate and what actions they should take to make the most favorable impression in these roles. Panelists will be split into multiple rooms to take these questions. Panelists may also wish to offer a few of their own suggestions about maximizing the 2L summer experience and about succeeding as a first year associate. BREAKOUT SESSION I (2:10-2:50 P.M.) CONSULT BREAKOUT SCHEDULE Students have the opportunity to meet with a practitioner they have pre-selected in a small group with one to three other students. (2Ls and 3Ls Only). Students will be given first priority if they wish to meet with a practitioner from a firm that they have worked for or will work for in the future. BREAKOUT II (3:00-3:45) CONSULT BREAKOUT SCHEDULE • Students have the opportunity to meet with a practitioner they have pre-selected in a small group with one to three other students. Preference given to 1Ls. • Workshop: “Opportunities to Work Internationally” ROOMS 3171, 4044 & 4172 Panelists will discuss their own experiences working internationally and advise students on how they might get involved in international work. Panelists: Nick Gaede & Laura Sizemore, ROOM 3171, Margaret Stowers and Gray McCalley, ROOM 4044, and Chris Mangum, ROOM 4172 • Workshop: “Career Options for Students Who Are Interested in Health Care Law” Co-Sponsored by the Health Law Society ROOM 4046 This panel provides some anecdotal experiences on working in various roles in and around health care law, including working within law firms of various sizes, working in-house, and representing various clienteles, including pharmaceutical manufacturers, health care providers, managed care organizations, doctors, and patients. Panelists: Winston Henderson, Kevin Kramer, and Darvin Williams BREAKOUT III (4:00-4:45) CONSULT BREAKOUT SCHEDULE • Students have the opportunity to meet with a practitioner they have pre-selected in a small group with one to three other students. Preference given to 1Ls. • Workshop: “Opportunities to Work in IP and Emerging Technology” CONSULT BREAKOUT SCHEDULE Panelists will discuss their own experience working in intellectual property and emerging technology and will advise students on how they might get involved in this type of work. Wine and appetizers will be served on the third floor loggia. 4 PANELISTS Thomas Bezanson, J.D. ’74 is a partner in the New York office of Chadbourne & Parke and the head of the Products Liability Practice Group. He has more than three decades of experience in the defense of products liability actions, representing both U.S. and European clients. Mr. Bezanson was involved in the nationally publicized lawsuits brought against The American Tobacco Company and Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation involving claims of personal injury as a result of smoking.
