Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi
YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. The family is monophyletic (Feng 2005, Tukuoka 2008, Wahlert & Ballard 2010 in press), even though phylogenetic relationships within Violaceae are still unclear (Feng 2005, Tukuoka 2008). The family embrace a great diversity of vegetative and floral morphologies. Members are herbs, lianas or trees, with flowers ranging from strongly spurred to unspurred. -

Alberto da Silva Lavinas, 1847, Centro, Três Rios, RJ, Cep- 25804-100, [email protected], 1Discentes do Curso de Bacharelado em Gestão Ambiental, 2Professor Adjunto Departamento de Ciências do Meio Ambiente) RESUMO Uma breve análise de Passiflora actinia Hooker (Passifloraceae) foi realizada no Parque Nacional Serra dos Órgãos, localizado no estado do Rio de Janeiro, cujo objetivo foi analisar a ocorrência e a frequência de polinização da P. actinia, e o modo com que a mesma realiza esse processo. O estudo foi realizado em cinco flores presentes na estrada principal do PARNASO, próximas as entradas das trilhas Primavera e Cartão Postal, sendo realizada as anotações dos horários dos visitantes. Passiflora actinia apresenta flores vistosas alvas com corona de filamentos em cinco séries, bandeados em branco e violeta, tornando-se avermelhadas em direção à base, o que atrai os polinizadores. As flores foram visitadas principalmente por moscas, abelhas, mamangabas e besouros, e apenas uma vez por beija-flor. No período entre as 14h00min e 15h00min, houve um aumento significativo na frequência de agentes polinizadores nas flores, provavelmente devido ao período de aumento de néctar na flor. HEARN Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT To understand evolutionary patterns and processes that account for anatomical diversity in relation to ecology and life form diversity, anatomy of storage roots and stems of the genus Adenia (Passifloraceae) were analyzed using an explicit phylogenetic context. Over 65,000 measurements are reported for 47 quantitative and qualitative traits from 58 species in the genus. Vestiges of lianous ancestry were apparent throughout the group, as treelets and lianous taxa alike share relatively short, often wide, vessel elements with simple, transverse perforation plates, and alternate lateral wall pitting; fibriform vessel elements, tracheids associated with vessels, and libriform fibers as additional tracheary elements; and well-developed axial parenchyma. Multiple cambial variants were observed, including anomalous parenchyma proliferation, anomalous vascular strands, successive cambia, and a novel type of intraxylary phloem. -

Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. Common name: Corky Passion Vine; Small Passion Flower; Cork Passionflower; Small Passion Fruit; Vine Corky Passion; Corky Passion Flower Stem A slender vine not exceeding a stem diameter of 2 cm. Leaves Leaf blades lobed or smooth. Lobed blades about 4.5-8 x 3.5-6.5 cm, smooth blades about 2-4.2 x 1.2-2.5 cm. Petioles about 0.5-2.5 cm long with two globular glands attached to the sides of the petiole usually, but not always, along the upper half of the petiole. Stipules linear, about 6-7 mm long. Lateral veins 5 or 6 on each side of the midrib. Tendrils simple (unbranched), axillary. Flowers Flower [not vouchered]. © Australian Tropical Herbarium Flowers about 18-20 mm diam., stalks about 13-15 mm long, articulated in the upper half. Calyx tube flat, disk-like at the apex, about 5-6 mm diam. Calyx lobes or perianth lobes about 8-9 mm long. True petals absent. Corona in four whorls decreasing in size towards the centre. Stamens attached to a gynophore about 2 mm long. Free staminal filaments about 2.5 mm long, anthers about 1.7 mm long. Styles three, free from one another, curved, each about 4 mm long.
