  • Lukas Schwarzacher and Fumie Tomita, in Tokyo, Contributed Reporting for This Article
Arts and Leisure Desk; SECT2 Land Of the Rising Cliche By MOTOKO RICH; Lukas Schwarzacher and Fumie Tomita, in Tokyo, contributed reporting for this article. 3021 words 4 January 2004 The New York Times Late Edition - Final 1 English (c) 2004 New York Times Company IN the climactic battle of ''Kill Bill Vol. 1,'' Quentin Tarantino's bloody revenge flick, O-Ren Ishii, the kimono-clad yakuza chieftess played by Lucy Liu, turns to Uma Thurman's blonde, blue-eyed Bride, and caustically remarks: ''Silly Caucasian girl likes to play with samurai swords.'' The Bride turns out to be pretty good with her blade, but the sentiment might well be an epigraph for this season of subtitles and samurai. Through the same sort of Hollywood kismet that produces concurrent movies about deadly asteroids and exploding volcanoes, the theaters are suddenly overrun with images of Japan. Tom Cruise is thundering across the battlefields of Meiji Restoration Japan in ''The Last Samurai,'' in pursuit of the doomed Bushido honor code and the enlightened spirituality of Zen Buddhism. ''Lost in Translation,'' Sofia Coppola's portrait of alienated Americans in Tokyo, is one of the indie hits of the year. Nearly half the action in the first volume of ''Kill Bill'' (the second appears next month), with its rapturous, over-the-top homage to yakuza, manga and other Japanese genre films, takes place in a surreal movie-land Japan, subtitles and addled accents flying. It's not just the setting that unites these movies. They are the objects of heated debate, particularly among Asian-Americans and Japanese, about whether Hollywood's current depictions of Japan are racist, naive, well-intentioned, accurate -- or all of the above.

  • Humanist Narratology and the Suburban Ensemble Dramedy
Humanist Narratology and the Suburban Ensemble Dramedy Wyatt Moss-Wellington A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of: Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of Sydney 2017 DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. Wyatt Moss-Wellington 2 ABSTRACT What is a “humanistic drama”? Although we might describe narrative works as humanist, and references to the humanistic drama abound across a breadth of critical media, including film and literary theory, the parameters of these terms remain elliptical. My work attempts to clarify the narrative conditions of humanism. In particular, humanists ask how we use narrative texts to complicate our understanding of others, and question the ethics and efficacy of attempts to represent human social complexity in fiction. After historicising narrative humanism and situating it among related philosophies, I develop humanist hermeneutics as a method for reading fictive texts, and provide examples of such readings. I integrate literary Darwinism, anthropology, cognitive science and social psychology into a social narratology, which catalogues the social functions of narrative. This expansive study asks how we can unite the descriptive capabilities of social science with the more prescriptive ethical inquiry of traditional humanism, and aims to demonstrate their productive compatibility.

  • DARE Prospectus Financial Combo 02:14:08
you saw a GREAT high school movie in the theater? There is a lack of quality product out there, and a large, under-served market that is hungry for material. “The good girl; the outsider; the cool guy—like you’ve never seen them before.” American high school movies are some of the best loved, most financially successful films in popular culture. Drawing on these films from their early roots in “Rebel Without A Cause” to John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” DARE both celebrates and reinvigorates the genre for a new, savvier generation of American youth. Everyone has their favorite. The average movie fan can recite lines from their favorite teen flick. These movies are talked about when released in the theaters, collected when they come out on DVD, and treasured for a lifetime. Just think - the PUBLIC could be talking about a film you helped make. As an investor in DARE, you have the opportunity to be a part of film history, creating a new kind of high school film with the goal of joining the ranks of the classic American high school movies. But more importantly, you will be a part of creating something unique; a film that quite literally does not yet exist in this world. Smart, sophisticated, and subtle filmmaking is always in demand. The filmmaking team behind DARE has a record of commit- ment to making quality, intelligent, groundbreaking films of vision. David and Adam met at Columbia University's Graduate Film Division where they became fast friends and collaborators. Their first project was a short film version of DARE, which David wrote and produced, and Adam directed.
