    Women in Hindu Dharma- a Tribute Respected Ladies and Gentlemen1, Namaste! Women and the Divine Word:- Let me start my talk with a recitation from the Vedas2, the ‘Divinely Exhaled’ texts of Hindu Dharma – Profound thought was the pillow of her couch, Vision was the unguent for her eyes. Her wealth was the earth and Heaven, When Surya (the sun-like resplendent bride) went to meet her husband.3 Her mind was the bridal chariot, And sky was the canopy of that chariot. Orbs of light were the two steers that pulled the chariot, When Surya proceeded to her husband’s home!4 The close connection of women with divine revelation in Hinduism may be judged from the fact that of the 407 Sages associated with the revelation of Rigveda, twenty-one5 are women. Many of these mantras are quite significant for instance the hymn on the glorification of the Divine Speech.6 The very invocatory mantra7 of the Atharvaveda8 addresses divinity as a ‘Devi’ – the Goddess, who while present in waters, fulfills all our desires and hopes. In the Atharvaveda, the entire 14th book dealing with marriage, domestic issues etc., is attributed to a woman. Portions9 of other 19 books are also attributed to women sages10. 1 It is a Hindu tradition to address women before men in a group, out of reverence for the former. For instance, Hindu wedding invitations are normally addressed ‘To Mrs. and Mr. Smith’ and so on and not as ‘To Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ or as ‘ To Mr. and Mrs. John Smith’ or even as ‘To Mrs.

    St. Theresa Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Tracing Women through the Ages: Past Trends and Future Challenges Dr. Suchitra Awasthi Assistant Professor, Department of English Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani, Nainital Uttarakhand, India Email address: [email protected] Abstract This paper tries to understand the status of women over the period of time in society. It draws parallels between the fundamental differences in approaches towards women in the West and in India, a trait which can also be witnessed in the realm of their respective religions too. From the realm of mythologies and religions, the paper moves on to give a historical perspective on the issue and further explores the position of women, both in the West and in India. In spite of the superficial differences in the two cultures, the paper observes that with the passage of time, the condition of women kept on deteriorating both in the West as well as in India until the 19th century. The paper specifically pays attention to the happenings of the 19th century and their influence on the gender discourse. The study is mainly based on the textual analysis of myths and religions which give an idea about the portrayal of women in the past and its impact on the contemporary gender relationship. But from enjoying free and esteemed position in the Post-Rigvedic society, women started being discriminated. The egalitarian era evaporates leaving the signs in term of Polygamy, Manipulation, Sexual harassment and deterioration . Child marriage, Widow burning(Sati), Purdaha Pratha has undergone some drastic changes due to commercialisation and Consumerization of the society.

However the modern Hindu society, seems to be enveloped by materialism are side-lining the essence of being a Hindu. Women are pushed to a cul-de-sac of identity crisis. Dowry deaths, female foeticide, girl-chid discrimination, domestic violence, sexual exploitation are rampant in it which is not in coherence with the Hindu dictates. The grim situation forces us to ponder on the reasons which transformed the attitude of Hindu society towards its women. The present paper tries to examine the status of Hindu women in ancient India. It is an attempt to trace the reasons responsible for a gradual change in the outlook of Hindus towards it women.     ॐ 1 | P a g e ॐ Inspiring and Unprecedented Initiative In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programmes - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in 7 vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of 7 e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayana, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life, and the Contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire operation was 2 | P a g e ॐ conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.
