A reference to the excellence of Indian dyeing has been found in St. Jerome's fourth century Latin translation of the Bible in which Job declared wisdom to be even more lasting than the dyed colours of India. Originating perhaps In Rajasthan, the craft of the tie and dye migrated to Gujarat where it soon had fLourishing centres at Jamnagar, Rajkot, Wan kaner, Morvi, Dhoraji, Surendranagar, Porbandar, Bantva, Kutiyrma, Anjar, BIll/j, Mandvi, Ahmadabad, Pethapur and Deesa. In its final evolution the craft reached its zenith at Jamnagar where it is believed to have come from Kutch. The motif displayed on this volume is a compressed version of the design on a Jamnagar tie and dye saree. These saris are very much in demand here and abroad, (Block from an ink tracing by K. D.
