(Hons) Australian Rivers Institute Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, October 2006 ii iii Summary This study investigated spatial genetic structuring of two groups of Australian Ogyris butterflies (Lycaenidae). Ogyris represents one of several Australian endemic butterfly radiations that is well characterised in terms of basic biology but lacking in data useful for discriminating among the potential factors promoting divergence and speciation. A phylogeographic approach was used to document structuring in mitochondrial DNA markers (mtDNA) across the geographic range of two groups of closely related taxa. These include a pair of sister species: Ogyris zosine and O. genoveva, and the polytypic species O. amaryllis which is comprised of four subspecies. Topological relationships among recognised taxonomic units were tested and polyphyletic patterns investigated as a potential source of information relating to divergence and speciation. Sister species Ogyris zosine and O. genoveva were found to exhibit a polyphyletic relationship based on mtDNA. The deepest divergence within the group separated allopatric populations of O. zosine in northern Australia which do not correspond to a recognised taxonomic entity. -

ABSTRACT: Six species of ants are presented as new to the fauna of Gran Canaria: Pheidole pallidula (Nyl.), Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nyl.), Solenopsis geminata (Fabr.), Aphaenogaster iberica Emery, Tapinoma melanocephalum Fabr. and Lasius grandis Forel. The importance of these introduced species to the original fauna is also discussed. Key words: Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, new species, introduced species. INTRODUCTION During some short stays in Gran Canaria the ant fauna was studied. Most of the known species were found and checked against current literature (Barquín, 1981; 1993). It was then noticed that there were some species that had not previously been reported from the island. These could be named later on. This report contains a list of the species with descriptions and figures. Hopefully it can be used as a complement to the keys in Barquín (1981). Ants are the most abundant group of soil arthropods in olive groves where they are involved in various trophic relation- ships of great importance for crops. The system of soil management is one agricultural practice that has a great effect on ants, so the objective of this study was to compare ant populations in organic olive orchards with a ground cover of natural vegetation and others where this natural vegetation is mechanically removed at the beginning of June. Ants were sampled using pitfall traps at 14, 30, 70 and 90 days after the removal of the ground vegetation. Overall, ant biodiversity did not change. However, changes were observed in the abundance of ant species, in particular, in those species that build shallow nests in the soil, both between the rows of trees and under the canopy of olive trees. In contrast, deep nesting species, such as Messor barbarus, were not affected. -

Here we summa- rize known ant records from Bermuda, provide an update on the conflict between the domi- nant ant species, and evaluate the possible impact of the dominant species on the other ants in Bermuda. We examined ant specimens from Bermuda representing 20 species: Brachy- myrmex heeri Forel, B. obscurior Forel, Camponotus pennsylvanicus (De Geer), Cardio- condyla emeryi Forel, C. obscurior Wheeler, Crematogaster sp., Hypoponera opaciceps (Mayr), H. punctatissima (Roger), L. humile, Monomorium monomorium Bolton, Odontomachus rug- inodis Smith, Paratrechina longicornis (Latreille), P. vividula (Nylander), P. megacephala, Plagiolepis alluaudi Forel, Solenopsis (Diplorhoptrum) sp., Tetramorium caldarium Roger, T. simillimum (Smith), Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger), and an undetermined Dacetini. Records for all but three (H. punctatissima, P. vividula, W. auropunctata) include specimens from 1987 or later. We found no specimens to confirm records of several other ant species, in- cluding Monomorium pharaonis (L.) and Tetramorium caespitum (L.). Currently, L. humile dominates most of Bermuda, while P. megacephala appear to be at its lowest population lev- els recorded. Though inconspicuous, B. obscurior is common and coexists with both dominant species. Paratrechina longicornis has conspicuous populations in two urban areas. Day 1 Sunday 5th May After dropping off the first group, at the airport, we visited the nearby Biguglia Lake and explored a range of coastal and farmland habitats. The sandy beach was backed by Cottonweed Achillea maritima, the handsome knapweed Centaurea sphaerocephala, Sea Chamomile Anthemis maritima and Sea Daffodil Pancratium maritimum and in coastal maquis, there were large stands of the grey-leaved, yellow-flowered Cistus halimifolius. On the lake, we saw the rare Audouin’s Gull and our raptor sightings included Eleonora’s Falcon, Western Marsh Harrier and a pair of Golden Eagle. Other birds, we had not seen during the previous week, included Pallid Swift, Stonechat and a very smart Woodchat Shrike, not far from the airport runway. Unfortunately the weather had been atrocious, with high winds and periods of rain. The airport had been closed for much of the afternoon and the inbound flight, carrying our second group, was delayed by over an hour. Once we had loaded the minibuses, we set off on our journey across the island. The first part was through colourful maquis, with bright-yellow Woad Isatis tinctoria often lining the route. -
