1 ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM George C. Bollman Center

The Albright Lions practice and play in one of the finest small-college basketball venues in the nation, the George C. Bollman Center. The Schumo Center for Fitness and Well-Being was built onto the Bollman Center in the summer of 2007, further enhancing the athletic facilities.

The Bollman Arena was completely renovated in 1998-99. The interior of the structure was replaced, and new mechanized bleachers now complement the sparkling playing floor (which was refurnished in 2012). The bleachers include 240 VIP chair-back seats located at center court on both sides. The walls and ceiling are painted bright Albright red and white.

Championship banners have been hung, a $25,000 sound system was installed, and in the summer of 2007, a brand new floor was installed. Finally, Albright is one of the few small colleges to boast an electronic 24-foot rotating signage scorer's table. The campaign to renovate the Bollman Arena was spearhead- ed by former Albright basketball player John Scholl '69.

In the summer of 2011, a state-of-the-art air conditioning/heating system was installed in the Bollman Center. This top-of-the-line system will give players, students, and fans comfortable conditions throughout the year.

ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM 2 Season Preview

The Albright College men’s basketball team is looking to complete a championship season after coming up just short on several occasions in 2012-13.

The Lions went 22-7 last year- the second-most victories in school history. However, Albright was #10 Sam upset at home in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, and was left out of the NCAA tournament Marrella despite being projected for an at-large bid by D3hoops.com. The Red and White then hosted the ECAC South championships, but dropped the championship game in double-overtime to Juniata.

“We had the second-highest win total in school history, but we truly didn’t win anything,” said head coach Rick Ferry. “Even though we had a lot of success, it still left us with an empty feeling, and hope- fully left a little bit of a bad taste in our players’ mouths.”

Albright will need to replace DIII News Honorable Mention All-American Dave Singleton, the 2012-13 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year. Leading the way this season will be three seniors in their third year as starters, including two returning All-Conference selections.

Senior guard Sam Marrella will run the point for a third consecutive season, after turning in a 3.30 -to-turnover ratio last year. He totaled 89 assists, and shot a team-best 79.5% from the line. “He really understands what we want to do,” said Ferry. “He has a tremendous basketball IQ and does a nice job of getting us into what we want to run.”

Wing players Pedro Perez and Kyle Jordan earned Honorable Mention All-Commonwealth nods and return for their final season at Albright. Perez (14.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg), a fifth-year senior, is another smart player who can shoot from outside and has become a bigger scoring threat each year.

Jordan (11.3 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 50 assists, 35 blocks, 31 steals, 53.5 FG%) can do a bit of everything for the Lions, on both ends of the floor. “I think he’s the best defensive player in the conference,” said #3 Pedro Ferry. “He can defend any position on the floor, and defend it well. There’s not many guys out there Perez that you can say that about.”

Senior Reuel Moore, sophomore center Calvert Gantz, sophomore forward Evan Ward and junior point guard Devin Brown have seen varying levels of action in the past but will all be asked to step into bigger roles this season.

“A big part of our success will hinge on how those guys step up their game,” said Ferry. “It’s a very talented group, and we have a very talented group of freshmen coming in as well. How all of that blends together is going to go a long way in determining the kind of success we have this year.”

After being one of the top teams left out by the NCAA selection committee last year, Albright had upgraded its non-conference schedule with the goal of preparing themselves for a difficult Common- wealth Conference slate. The Lions open up on November 20 at Wesley, who earned an at-large bid out of the Mid-Atlantic Region ahead of Albright last season. They will also play Franklin & Marshall, who made an Elite Eight appearance the season before.

Ferry expects the Commonwealth Conference to be even more difficult this year than in past seasons. “The night you don’t show up is the night you lose, and it’s a great challenge,” he said of the league’s top-to-bottom depth.

“That’s why I’m really optimistic over the fact that we have played hard every practice so far,” he continued. “We’re setting ourselves up for the consistency that’s needed to have success in this conference.”
