WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.- USTA Foundation, the national charitable foundation of the Association (USTA), has announced that Richard Martinez of San Antonio, Texas who recently graduated from GW Brackenridge High School, has been named a recipient of a $10,000 Rosalind Walter Scholarship. This past spring, USTA Foundation granted 53 high school students a variety of college scholarships, totaling $373,000.

The USTA Foundation strives to encourage students to pursue their goals and highest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens.

“The USTA Foundation is once again excited to award these hard-working, well-deserving seniors,” said Dan Faber, USTA Foundation Executive Director. “We are proud to contribute to their academic achievements, and look forward to their continued success.”

Martinez, 18, is a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars. At GW Brackenridge High School he was a member of the men’s varsity tennis team, where he served as team captain his senior year. Additional accomplishments include being named to the All-District Area Tennis Team and All District All-Academic Team in high school.

This fall, Martinez will attend the University of Texas, Arlington, with plans to pursue a major in film and communication studies.

The scholarship is named in honor of Rosalind Palmer Walter, an active member of the USTA Foundation Board since its inception. Walter was responsible for funding the first USTA Foundation scholarship in 1994. During World War II, Walter worked as a riveter, building the F4U marine gull- winged fighter airplane, becoming the inspiration for the 1942 song “Rosie the Riveter.” Walter took tremendous pride knowing that the hard work, dedication and precision she put into her job helped save lives. The Rosalind P. Walter Scholarship is awarded to a student of good character and who share Walter’s belief in always putting forth one’s best effort and in giving back to one’s community to make it a better place. # # #
