Dear Wildcat Fans and B-CU Media:

As we prepare for a new season at Bethune-Cookman University the winds of change are evident across the About the campus, for this is not only a new calendar academically and athletically, but a new season of leadership. Visions of Victory

Dr. Edison O. Jackson, the sixth president of our beloved Blog and Column: institution, takes the helm to guide us to newer heights and milestones. He has assembled a new leadership team and Visions of Victory is a monthly-released blog his role is to continue to direct the path of this ever-growing and column written by B-CU Director of university and to manage the era of expansion in buildings and programs that his Athletics Lynn W. Thompson, focusing on predecessor, Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed, initiated. issues, topics and a wide range of ideas and For her service and leadership we are eternally grateful to Dr. Reed…and for Dr. concepts surrounding the realm of Jackson’s experience, enthusiasm, vision and the promise of an even greater level of intercollegiate athletics and beyond. This is success for B-CU, we are truly excited. the first issue of the 2012-13 academic year and the entire blog can be viewed on the Change is easily seen amongst the faculty, staff and students with the “New Attitude” official Bethune-Cookman Athletics website at: approach that Dr. Jackson has illustrated, but this new attitude is simply a part of his www.BCUathletics.com/Visions_of_Victory. greater vision of “The B-CU Experience” that has taken root on campus, in the community and in the hearts and minds of Wildcats young and old, near and far. That’s the power of “vision”…it can be easily shared. Once a vision is clearly articulated and With over 20 years of experience in the rapidly shared, it morphs into action and then becomes the foundation for enormous changing world of college sports, Thompson accomplishments and great works to be recognized; those of us who are fortunate certainly has a lot to say. Whether it's enough to have careers working with teams and individual athletes witness this process commenting on new trends or simply all the time. But teamwork is not only found in athletics. It is universal. motivating young people, B-CU's AD is highly qualified to weigh in. When a vision becomes a reality, people’s lives are changed and they become empowered to accomplish virtually anything. One of the visions becoming real this "I consider it an honor and a big part of my season is the completion of the Larry Handfield Athletic Training Center. It was born out life to be able to share with people some of of a great need, nurtured by former Presidents Oswald Bronson and Trudie Kibbe Reed, the techniques, words and ideas that have shared with Larry Handfield and countless others who gave unselfishly to raise the funds worked in my role as a mentor and manager," for this tremendous project, and now we are poised to produce great championships and even greater champions simply because of a shared vision. said Thompson recently. "Visions of Victory will allow us the opportunity to continue to All of our head coaches and student-athletes get the picture…they understand the share with people the great things that are mission and they are focused on the vision. They know that the most important element happening on our campus and to our of vision is faith. Faith is the lens that we look through to focus on our vision…only young people." through the lens of faith are we able to understand that our vision is not limited to what we are, but pointing to what we are to become. Dr. Bethune said that “without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible. Faith in God is the greatest power, but great, too is faith in oneself.”

So, as this new season approaches, a shared vision emerges, full of faith and loaded with expectations for academic excellence, phenomenal championships and accomplishments in unchartered waters. I am asking our fans and alumni to cheer louder than ever before and to share in the collective vision by investing in the lives of our most valued asset… our students, as they strive to become Champions in every aspect.

Yours in Victory, Lynn W. Thompson Lynn W. Thompson

University Founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Born on a farm near Mayesville, South Carolina in 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune, the 15th child of former slaves, rose from humble beginnings to become a world-renowned educator, civil and human rights leader, champion for women and young people, and an advisor to five U.S. presidents.

The dream of opening her own school took Mary McLeod Bethune to Florida – first to Palatka and then to Daytona Beach, where she started the school that would become Bethune-Cookman University.

Dr. Bethune gave counsel to presidents and made connections with America’s elite and was readily accessible to average men and women and the college students that she mothered and mentored.

Wherever Dr. Bethune saw a need, she found a way to meet that need and move society closer to her vision. When a black student was turned away from the hospital in Daytona Beach, she opened a hospital to serve the black community. When the nation mobilized resources for the first and second World Wars, she pressed for the integration of the American Red Cross and Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. She led voter registration drives and anti-lynching campaigns.

Through it all Dr. Bethune relied on faith and prayer for guidance and inspiration, saying, “Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.”

Mary McLeod Bethune’s vision lives on today at the school that she founded which continues to sustain her legacy of faith, scholarship and service. Bethune-Cookman University 2013 Wildcats Baseball
