Following a challenging year, on and off the pitch, it’s probably a fair assessment to say that our sport found itself in the bronze medal position in 2015 – mirroring the achievement of the Springboks. While there were many gold and silver moments, we also endured some disappointments and difficulties, which, all things being equal, contribute to a good if not outstanding year. He might not get many invites to the cocktail parties, but this guy deserves the support - and tip offs - of decent minded people who want change for the better. If there was a Pulitzer Prize for courageous sports journalism in SA, Joffe would be the only candidate. What many of his don't touch rivals don't realise, is that he is the only go to man from sources wanting to blow open stories. It's only a matter of time before he drops a bombshell. The system in South African sport is all about sports administrators co-opting journos and then rewarding them with cocktail party invites and dropping the odd little scoop story. It's an easy life if that is the mediocrity that you aspire to.

The Springboks that ended the year were markedly different to those that had ended 2011; the Southern Kings were preparing for Vodacom Super TRugby while there were less high-profile but no less significant changes off the field. Most obviously, it was our pleasure to appoint Heyneke Meyer in succes- sion to Peter de Villiers as the Springbok coach. There was a time when South African rugby had a reputation for hiring and firing coaches with reckless aban- don. I am pleased to say that we have put those days long behind us. Heyneke succeeded Peter, who had served a four- year term, who in turn had succeeded Jake White, who had also served out his four-year term. With that knowledge he was able to begin a difficult baptism to his steward- ship of the national team with confi- dence.
