Lucifora2 The eyespot skate, Atlantoraja cyclophora, is an endemic species from the southwestern Atlantic, occurring from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to northern Patagonia, Argentina. The feeding habits of this species, from off Uruguay and north Argentina, were evaluated using a multiple hypothesis modelling approach. In general, the diet was composed mainly of decapod crustaceans, followed by teleost fishes. Molluscs, mysidaceans, amphipods, isopods, lancelets and elasmobranchs were consumed in lower proportion. The consumption of shrimps drecreased with increasing body size of A. cyclophora. On the other hand, the consumption of teleosts increased with body size. Mature individuals preyed more heavily on crabs than immature individuals. Teleosts were consumed more in the south region (34º – 38ºS) and crabs in the north region (38º – 41ºS). Shrimps were eaten more in the warm season than in the cold season. Prey size increased with increasing body size of A. cyclophora, but large individuals also consumed small teleosts and crabs. Atlantoraja cyclophora has demersal-benthic feeding habits, shifts its diet with increasing body size and in response to seasonal and regional changes in prey availability and distribution. La raya de círculos, Atlantoraja cyclophora, es una especie endémica del Atlántico Sudoccidental, que se distribuye desde Río de Janeiro, Brasil, hasta el norte de la Patagonia, Argentina. Los hábitos alimentarios de esta especie fueron evaluados frente a la costa de Uruguay y norte de Argentina, utilizando un enfoque de modelado de múltiples hipótesis. En general, la dieta estuvo compuesta principalmente por crustáceos decápodos (71,37 %IRI), seguido de peces teleósteos (28,54 %IRI). En menor proporción fueron consumidos moluscos, misidáceos, anfípodos, isópodos, anfioxos y elasmobranquios. El consumo de decápodos Natantia disminuyó con el incremento del tamaño del cuerpo de A. cyclophora. Por otro lado, el consumo de teleósteos se incrementó con el incremento del tamaño del cuerpo. Individuos maduros consumieron cangrejos en mayor proporción que individuos inmaduros. Los teleósteos fueron consumidos mayormente en la región sur (34º – 38ºS) y los cangrejos en la región norte (38º – 41ºS). Los decápodos Natantia fueron más consumidos en la estación cálida que en la estación fría. El tamaño de las presas consumidas se incrementó con el aumento del tamaño corporal de A. cyclophora, pero individuos de mayor tamaño no abandonadon el consumo de pequeños cangrejos y teleósteos. Atlantoraja cyclophora presenta hábitos alimentarios demersal-bentónicos, cambia su dieta con el incremento del tamaño corporal y en respuesta a cambios estacionales y regionales en la disponibilidad y distribución de las presas. In coastal waters off Uruguay and northern Argentina, the skate species Atlantoraja castelnaui (Miranda Ribeiro, 1907), Rioraja agassizii (Müller & Henle, 1841) and Sympterygia acuta Garman, 1877, that co-occur in space and time with A. cyclophora, showed a consistent regional shift in the diet composition: teleosts were consumed more in the southern part of this region, whereas decapods were eaten more in the northern part (Barbini & Lucifora, 2011; 2012; 2016). Therefore, we expected to find the same spatial pattern in A. cyclophora. We examined the food habits of A. cyclophora off Uruguay and north Argentina. BREMEC __________________________________________________________________ Summary The main objectives of this report are to analyze the infralitoral benthic assemblages of the Río de la Plata estuary and adjacent marine zones, and establish broad patterns of species diversity throughout the study area. Species richness was utilized as a measure of diversity. The report was divided in two major approaches: the analysis of an historical background and the EH-09-99 survey. The taxonomical groups that contributed with the major number of species were the mollusks, crustaceans, polychaetes, echinoderms and coelenterates. A classical gradient of increasing species richness from estuarine to marine waters was found. Also, few species were found inhabiting both estuarine and marine waters. The species richness values were high at the continental shelf and the coastal marine environments. The highest number of species was recorded in mussel beds and coarse-sandy bottoms marine assemblages. The irregular pattern of species richness found in marine waters could be due to the presence of different heterogeneous bottom types all over the study area. It is concluded that the available information about benthic communities inhabiting the study area is scarce. In addition, a large portion of the studies were developed mainly on the marine zones < 50 m, while the estuarine zones and the marine zones > 50 m are underestimated.

Considering their geographical distribution and the fisheries to which they are subject, two groups can be established: coastal skates and deepwater skates. The coastal skates inhabit the coastal strip of the Treaty area, between 34° and 39° S and from the coast to 50 m depth. It is composed of at least 9 species (Sympterygia bonapartii, S. acuta, Atlantoraja castelnaui, A. cyclophora, Psammobatis bergi, P. extenta, P. rutrum, Rioraja agassizi and Zearaja flavirostris (= Z. chilensis, = Dipturus chilensis). It should be mentioned that the species S. bonapartii and Z. flavirostris have a wide geographic distribution in the maritime areas south of 34° S, including both the coastal region and the deeper one. However, the highest abundances of S. bonapartii occur at depths less than 50 m, while Z. flavirostris, the most important of all the skate from the commercial point of view, is concentrated especially at depths greater than 50 m. A third species, Psammobatis lentiginosa, inhabit in an intermediate region between the two previous or ecotone, close to the 50 m isobath, between 34° and 42° S. In the Treaty area the coastal skates are captured by the fleet Argentine coast that operates on the multispecific fishery called "variado costero" and by the Uruguayan fleet Category B. The others species of the Family Rajidae, which inhabit in the average and external continental shelf of the ZCP, are included in the group deepwater skates.

Bennett1 Abstract Longnose skates may have a high intrinsic vulnerability among fishes due to their large body size, slow growth rates and relatively low fecundity, and their exploitation as fisheries target-species places their populations under considerable pressure. These skates are found circumglobally in subtropical and temperate coastal waters. Although longnose skates have been recorded for over 150 years in South America, the ability to assess the status of these species is still compromised by critical knowledge gaps. Based on a review of 185 publications, a comparative synthesis of the biology and ecology was conducted on two commercially important elasmobranchs in South American waters, the yellownose skate Zearaja chilensis and the roughskin skate Dipturus trachyderma; in order to examine and compare their taxonomy, distribution, fisheries, feeding habitats, reproduction, growth and longevity. There has been a marked increase in the number of published studies for both species since 2000, and especially after 2005, although some research topics remain poorly understood. Considering the external morphological similarities of longnose skates, especially when juvenile, and the potential niche overlap in both, depth and latitude it is recommended that reproductive seasonality, connectivity and population structure be assessed to ensure their long-term sustainability. Primeiramente, gostaríamos de atualizá-los sobre um aspecto bastante importante: as Eleições para a Diretoria e Conselho Deliberativo da nossa sociedade. Conforme comunicamos anteriormente, em função da pandemia do novo coronavírus e do adiamento do EBI 2021, as próximas eleições para os cargos de Diretoria e do Conselho Deliberativo, que ocorrem a cada dois anos, acontecerão de maneira remota em 2021, por meio de plataforma online já contratada. No início deste Editorial explicamos um pouco mais sobre como ocorrerão as eleições. Esperamos que leiam atentamente e nos contatem caso tenham dúvidas. The reason for making such revision is the remarkable advance in the knowledge of the dentition and the phylogenetic relationships of the recent and fossil rays. This is complemented by the multiple investigations on fossil Chondrichthyes from southern Central America and the Caribbean that have undoubtedly revolutionized the fossil record of the region. Many of the new species, then described for the Southern Limón Basin, have been validated and recognized by the scientific community and registered in other locations. However, it was necessary to review some of the previous determinations, in order to have an updated taxonomic record.
