Head Coach Rob Clune In September of 2002, Rob Clune had some pretty big shoes to fill when he replaced Allegheny’s all-time wins leader Phil Ness, who resigned as the Gator head coach to become a major gifts officer in the College’s Office of Development. It was Ness, the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories, who hired Clune as a Gator as- sistant in October 1989. The new head coach wasted no time in getting familiar with his surroundings, leading the Gators to a 16-12 overall record, a third-place finish during the conference regular season, and the NCAC Tournament title game in his first year. Allegheny knocked off nationally ranked Wittenberg Univer- sity twice during the season, including a 73-72 decision in the semifinals of the league tourney, before succumbing to The , a national semifinalist, in the title game. More recently, Allegheny posted a mark of 12-15 during the 2008-09 season, including a 7-9 record in the NCAC. The Gators closed out the regular season with a 59-57 win at Ohio Wesleyan, earning them the seventh seed in the conference tournament and another date with the No. 2 seed Battling Bishops. Allegheny then won its second straight contest at Ohio coaching staff Wesleyan -- this time, a 78-75 overtime decision -- to advance to the NCAC Tournament semifinals. The Gators’ season finally came to an end with a 73-56 loss to Wabash. In his seven years at the helm, Clune has posted a 82-101 overall record and a 51-62 mark in the NCAC. Moreover, the Gator coach has turned the offense into one of the best in the conference, finishing among the top four in four of the last six seasons. Allegheny led the NCAC in scoring during Clune’s first season, netting an average of 81.8 points per game, while the following year, forward Matt Magnusen became the first Allegheny player ever to lead the league in scoring, notching 547 points for a 21.0 scoring average. Prior to his appointment at Allegheny, Clune was the head coach at Bethany College (W. Va.), where he turned a struggling program into an NCAA Tournament team. In his seven seasons as the Bison mentor, his teams won two Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships and made two post- season appearances, while he was twice named PAC Coach of the Year. Clune’s best campaign came in 2001-02, when Bethany went 21-7 and won its first NCAA Tournament game since 1978. During his time at Bethany, Clune’s teams were usually near the top of Division Allegheny Coaching Records III in several offensive categories. Assistant Coach Scott Cooper Gator alum Scott Cooper will begin his second season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Allegheny College. A 2002 graduate, Cooper spent six years as an assistant with Alfred University (N.Y.) before coming back to Meadville. In 2004-05, he helped guide the second-best turnaround in NCAA Division III as Alfred improved from 3-22 (2003- 04) to 13-12. The improvement was the best in the East Region. The Saxons were ranked among the top 30 in offensive efficiency for three of Cooper’s years. Cooper was also the head men’s and women’s tennis coach for one season. With him at the helm, the men’s team set a school record for wins in a season while the women recorded their second-best mark and appeared in postseason play. As a player, Cooper appeared in the Gators’ starting lineup as a junior before suffering a knee injury. He lettered three times, earned the Rink Kofford Memorial Award (highest GPA on team) and was a member of Allegheny’s last NCAA Tournament team (1998-99). Cooper was also a member of the Allegheny track and field team, participating in the discus and high jump. Cooper has been a coach and lecturer for several camps/clinics and has worked for professional organizations including the Cavaliers and the Cleveland Rockers; and collegiate organizations such as Ohio State, Florida, Central Michigan, Southern Polytechnic State, Slippery Rock, Ohio Northern and Allegheny. Cooper graduated from Allegheny with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He minored in Psychology. At Alfred, he added a Master’s degree in Education to his resume in May 2004. 4 Allegheny Gators

The David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center david v. wise center A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among col- leges of Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the fall of 1997. The sparkling, multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The NeoShok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The arena’s six BPI baskets are among the best and most widely-used on the market. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximate- ly 17x30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level onto a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable amphitheatre effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts for basketball practices. The first men’s basketball game played at the Wise Center took place on Nov. 28, 1997, in the first round of the PNC Bank Clas- sic. Westminster won that first game, defeating Bethany, 99-48, before the Gators defeated Defiance, 85-78, in the nightcap. Allegheny’s first points were scored by Ben Schulz and the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead, never trailing the entire contest. The Gators had four scorers reach double figures, led by Rich Saxe, who had 19 points. Schulz had the gymnasium’s first double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Allegheny College men’s basketball team closed out the 2008-09 season by winning five of its last seven games and became the first seven- seed to beat a two-seed in the history of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament. During their late season run, the Gators recorded wins over three of the top four teams in the NCAC and won twice against second-place Ohio Wes- leyan in a four-day stretch. The 2009-10 edition of the Allegheny basketball team, which returns nine letterwinners and four starters, is looking to build on the last season’s momentum and return to the top of the NCAC. Rob Clune, in his eighth year as head coach, is optimistic that a strong senior class combined with talented newcomers can help season outlook reestablish the Gators as one of the conference’s elite teams. “We have a lot of veteran players returning this season who have seen significant playing time over the last few seasons,” said Clune. “The seniors in particular have really had to be major contributors since their sophomore year.” Despite the large number of returning players, Coach Clune says this year’s Gators will have a noticeably different look to them than in the past few years. George Raftis “In recent history, our frontcourt players were our stron- gest players, and our perimeter guys were just good enough for us Daniel Schlossberg will also add depth to the Gators’ front- to compete,” said Clune. “We’re going to be a much more balanced, court. more aggressive and faster-paced team offensively than we have been in the last three or four years, although ultimately, the success The Backcourt we have this season will still come down to how well we defend and While Allegheny’s depth may be limited in the frontcourt, .” the backcourt’s depth will be the team’s strength this season. Clune expects three other players to see major minutes on the perimeter. Senior Peter Jones, sophomore Donte Briscoe and freshman Devone McLeod are all expected to have a big im- pact in the Gators’ rotation. “Those three will all have to play big roles for us this season,” Clune said. “They all have a unique skill-set that we can utilize a lot of different ways, which allows us to do some things with lineups that we have not been able to for a while.” Both Jones and Briscoe saw significant playing time last season off the bench. Jones averaged 3.8 points per game while shooting .353 from three-point range. Briscoe was the Gators’ fourth-leading rebounder (3.1 rpg) and was one of the team’s best defenders. Both are expected to make bigger contributions this season as the Gators move to a more perimeter-oriented scheme. Hailing from Jersey City, N.J., McLeod comes to Allegheny George Raftis from St. Anthony High School where, as a junior, he helped the Friars to a State and national championship in 2007-08. While at St. Anthony, McLeod played for coaching legend Bob Hurley. Expected to see time in the backcourt for the Gators are junior Seth Eisner and freshmen Kyle Murphy and Alex Vargo.

The Schedule The Gators open their season at the Westminster Clas- sic with games against Westminster and Emory & Henry on Nov. Charlie Jaicks 20 and 21, respectively. Allegheny will also host its own holiday tournament on Nov. 28 and 29. It will take on Montclair State while Case Western and Wilmington are other participants. Over the
