They graciously gave their time to the Historic stand - and position on the joint Lotus Seven Club / Historic Lotus Register were amused to realise that the Lotus (now Caterham) Seven was still stand. The 'old timers' certainly attracted a great deal of public, trade, thriving after nearly 50 years of production (is this approaching a press and VIP interest, thanks to the organisational efforts of our own world record?). They were only ever on sale at the circuit, and were sold to raise funds for things going on in Silverstone Village. Being sold on the circuit gave them access to some very hard to find signatures, as you can see from this initial selection. The business of designing and engineering cars is a constant balancing act. Many factors influence the final product: market and customer requirements affect form and function, legislation is an unavoidable factor, engineering feasibility and manufacturing practically have to be considered. There are many more, not least cost – a product can only be successful if it works on a commercial basis. This careful balancing act is something that Lotus understands – it is critical for us to make a successful business out of niche volume cars – and it is something that our engineering clients value. It is incredibly important and at the heart of the work we do. But great things can also happen when talented designers and engineers operate outside the normal, ‘real-world’ constraints. The Tokyo motor show allows the Japanese Peter Morgan industry to play with technology. As ever, this year, there were many weird and wonderful examples. 10 Closer to home, the awesome Lotus Concept for Hot Wheels is the glorious result of Lotus Design being given the creative freedom to design a futuristic car to be made into a 1:64 scale toy car. Steven Crijns describes how his concept came to be. Although, if ever there was an article that was all about looking at the pictures, this is it. Sadly it won’t be on sale until next year, so too late for my Christmas list.

After Hawthorn was 2nd to Harry Schell in a Vanwall in practice, Francis improved the 250F by dropping the axle ratio and taking a leaf out of the rear spring (DASO 147). Hawthorn then won the race from Schell. This was just after Hawthorn had left Vandervell’s team, dissatisfied with their reliability, and returned to Ferrari for the classic GPs. Limited mileage has been accumulated since, with notable outings in the Glover Trophy at the last three editions of the Goodwood Revival. • Following a convincing Pole position at Brands Hatch this year with the HGPCA, this 1,500cc BRM V8 powered Lotus 24 led away from the start in the recent Glover Trophy race and featured strongly before finishing 3rd against stiff competition. • With 2015 FIA HTPs, this Lotus 24 will make an excellent entry to one of the most emotive grids in historic motorsport, racing on some of the best circuits across Europe. By 1962, Lotus had made a strong name for themselves in the world of Formula 1, and were becoming a force to be reckoned with. This came about with Colin Chapman’s Lotus 18 of 1960, which marked a change in formula car design. The low and sleek 18 was the first Lotus to feature a mid mounted engine instead of the traditional front mounted layout as in the Lotus 16 which went before, and subsequently gains were found in chassis design, weight and stiffness. Initially the new Lotus 18 ran with a 2,497cc Coventry Climax FPF four cylinder engine and the so called ‘Lotus Queerbox’ magnesium cased sequential transaxle which further contributed to the weight advantage that the Lotus 18 held.
