The Solo cups are overflowing at Merton’s centennial birthday celebration as 17 men in party hats assemble to toast Merton’s many faces, asking: What makes a man? What makes a saint? What if nothing is sacred—and everything is? As the night devolves, each facet of Merton’s contested image—silent monk, poet, spiritual anarchist, social activist—inspires more speeches, slow dances, makeouts, fist fights, and silent reflections, amassing a layered portrait of what it means to be a human being, full of contradictions and brimming with life.

Sarah Ruhl: A Comprehensive Analysis of The Clean House, Eurydice, Passion Play, Dead Man’s Cell Phone and In The Next Room or the Vibrator Play by Heather Welch, B.F.A. A Thesis In THEATRE ARTS Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTERS OF ARTS Approved William Gelber, Ph.D. Chair of Committee Bruce Hermann, M.F.A. Peggy Miller Dean of the Graduate School May, 2012 Copyright 2012, Heather Welch Texas Tech University, Heather Welch, May 2012 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would be remiss if I didn’t thank several people who have been instrumental to the process of writing this thesis and to my development as a student of the theatre. First and foremost, I would like to thank the members of my committee, Dr. Bill Gelber and Bruce Hermann. Dr. Gelber’s guidance throughout the entire process and his probing questions and thorough reviews of each chapter during the editing process has been extremely beneficial to this project. Bruce Hermann also has provided helpful insight and critical questions that shaped the methodology of this thesis and ultimately, the project is better because of it. I am indebted to both of them for their guidance, their kindness and for reassuring me when I was “in the weeds.” I must also give thanks to Dr. Norman Bert. It was in his Dramatic Analysis class in Fall 2010 that I first attempted to write about Sarah Ruhl. Once the semester was over, I realized that I was not quite done with writing about her.

The 2021-22 subscription season kicks off with a Berkeley Rep commission, Christina Anderson’s the ripple, the wave that carried me home, directed by Miranda Haymon. This world premiere was developed as part of the Theatre’s Ground Floor Summer Residency Lab and explores a family’s response to racial injustice and a daughter’s reckoning with her political inheritance. “We are beyond delighted to finally have a date on which we can all return to our theatres,” says Artistic Director Johanna Pfaelzer. “I know artists and audiences alike have been longing for this moment, when we can once again gather together to share these deeply human stories. We are counting the days ’til October 1!” Berkeley Rep welcomes back playwright Charles L. Mee and director Les Waters for Wintertime, the story of a gloriously eccentric family who arrive at their summer house in the winter woods for supposedly secret rendezvous – and soon bodies collide, doors slam, dishes fly, and everyone’s perfect plans go fantastically awry.

Social Work Garrett Eisler • New York City • September 8, 2008 • • • • A moment from The Civilians’ Paris Commune at the Public Theater Steve Cosson and The Civilians create non-traditional work that engages with community at every stage. In asking Artistic Director Steven Cosson where the name of his theatre troupe, The Civilians, comes from, I expected a very civic-minded — or perhaps even military — answer. But no. “It’s from old vaudeville slang,” he admits, “referring to people outside of show business.” The moni-ker reveals much about his OBIE- winning nonprofit company; not only do The Civilians usually operate way outside of showbiz themselves, but, as Cosson adds, they always strive “to look out-side of ourselves” to the community at large. All six Civilians productions so far (since their founding in 2001) flow from the company’s stated mission to “develop original projects based in the creative investigation of actual experi-ence.” Far from the “based on a true story” formula of film and television docudrama, though, Cosson and his colleagues view every piece as an opportunity to “experiment with process, con-tent and form” — often incorporating interviews with real people, extensive historical research, and always, live music and song. The Ladies (2004) juxtaposed the lives of infamous dictators’ wives (like Eva Peron and Imelda Marcos) with some of their own; for (I Am) Nobody’s Lunch (2004-2006), Civilians actors surveyed average citizens for their reflections and rants on current events and enacted them through songs and sketches; Gone Missing (2003-2007) also incorporated real-life interviews from a diverse sampling, but on more personal themes of loss — from the spiritual (9/11 stories) to the hilariously material (shoes and sock puppets).

Press Contact: Tim Etheridge, Director of Public Relations 510 647-2917; [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BERKELEY REP DELAYS OCTOBER REOPENING Wintertime will start 2021/22 season on November 12 August 11, 2021 — Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announced that due to the increasing COVID cases spurred by the Delta variant and to ensure the utmost safety, the 2021/22 season will now begin November 12, 2021 with the production of Wintertime, reuniting playwright Charles L. Mee and director Les Waters. “We care about the safety of our audiences, our artists, and our staff,” says Managing Director Susie Medak. “At this moment in time it simply seems as though the most prudent choice is to postpone our opening for a month to allow this current wave of infection to run its course.” Originally, the 2021/22 season was scheduled to begin on October 1, 2021 with the world premiere of the ripple, the wave that carried me home, written by Christina Anderson and directed by Miranda Haymon. That production will now be the final show of the 2021/22 season, beginning performances on September 9, 2022. Berkeley Rep is a fully vaccinated company, including every staff member, artist, and volunteer. All patrons must present a vaccination card, a photo of their card, or a digital vaccine record (e.g., myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov) with matching photo ID. Masks must be worn at all times in all areas of the theatre. Berkeley Rep will allow subscribers to view a show online if they determine they would feel more comfortable staying at home, as a form of “digital insurance.” For the most up-to-date information on our season shows and health and safety, please visit berkeleyrep.org.

  • THE BALD SOPRANO” October 23 – November 22, 2009
media contact: erica lewis-finein brightbutterfly pr brightbutterfly[at]hotmail.com CUTTING BALL THEATER OPENS 10 TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH IONESCO’S ABSURDIST MASTERPIECE “THE BALD SOPRANO” October 23 – November 22, 2009 SAN FRANCISCO (August 30, 2009) – San Francisco’s cutting-edge Cutting Ball Theater opens its 10 th season with Eugène Ionesco’s comic masterpiece THE BALD SOPRANO , in a new translation by Cutting Ball Artistic Director Rob Melrose . This hysterically funny play is the perfect follow up to last season’s hit production of Ionecso’s Victims of Duty , which garnered a Bay Area Critics Circle award for Best Production. Featuring Paige Rogers , David Sinaiko , Caitlyn Louchard , Donell Hill , Derek Fischer , and Anjali Vashi with direction by Rob Melrose , THE BALD SOPRANO plays October 23 through November 22 (Press opening: October 29 ) at the Cutting Ball Theater in residence at Exit on Taylor (277 Taylor Street) in San Francisco. For tickets ($15-30) and more information, the public may visit cuttingball.com or call 800-838-3006 . In THE BALD SOPRANO , Mr. and Mrs. Smith invite Mr. and Mrs. Martin over for a cheerful dinner. Plans for a sedate evening soon give way to hilarious chaos as polite conversation turns to confusion and the two couples engage in an escalating battle of linguistic acrobatics. Simultaneously comic and profound, THE BALD SOPRANO , about which The New York Times recently said, “The play has not aged. One might even suggest that we have caught up with [it],” is a play that breaks all the rules. While trying to learn English, Ionesco noticed the absurdity of the dialogues between the husband and wife in the textbook he was studying - she would inform him that they live in London, that they have three children, that the ceiling is above them and the floor is below them, all things he already knew perfectly well.

  • American Repertory Theatre in Association with the Joseph Papp Public Theater Presents the World Premiere of Cardenio by Stephen Greenblatt and Charles L
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Katalin Mitchell 617.495.2668 x8841 [email protected] April 1, 2008 American Repertory Theatre in association with The Joseph Papp Public Theater presents the world premiere of Cardenio by Stephen Greenblatt and Charles L. Mee directed by Les Waters May 10 — June 8 Loeb Drama Center Cambridge, Mass. — The American Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) is pleased to present the world premiere of Cardenio, written by Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt and playwright Charles L. Mee — inspired by Shakespeare’s play Cardenio, which was lost soon after its first performance. The production is directed by Les Waters, and runs at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge from Saturday, May 10 through Sunday, June 8; it will be available for press viewing beginning Wednesday, May 14. For their wedding Anselmo and Camila retreat with their closest friends to a villa in Umbria. Between the ceremony and the celebration, Anselmo begs Will, his best man, to flirt with his new wife to test her faithfulness. While Will struggles between appeasing his friend and probing his feelings for Camila, Anselmo’s parents, both aging actors, crash the party. They bring with them two surprises – a lost play by Shakespeare and Anselmo’s ravishing former classmate, Susana, to star in the play. Using Shakespeare’s comedies as inspiration, Stephen Greenblatt and Charles L. Mee have woven a contemporary version of the story, now set at a wedding party on the terrace of a villa in the Umbrian hills, and brimming with familiar Shakespearean flourishes. Along with the traditional criss-crossing of suspicious lovers and a cunning Iago-like meddler, the play cleverly updates other classic conventions.
