Policy on Receiving and Transcribing Transfer Units from Other Institutions

Hope International normally accepts coursework only from regionally accredited colleges and . The amount of transfer work credited toward a student’s undergraduate level degree will depend on the major selected and is required to be baccalaureate level work with a grade of “C” or better. Specific policy details may be found in the Hope International University 2014-15 Catalog http://www.hiu.edu/pdf/catalog-2014-2015.pdf under Admissions/Undergraduate Programs/Transfer Student, pp. 35-38; and under Academic Policies and Regulations: Credit by Transfer, pp. 94-95.

For students entering a graduate level program, up to 9 units of master’s level work from a regionally accredited graduate school may be accepted for credit toward the HIU graduate degree upon approval of the appropriate dean of the college.

Qualifying Transfer Coursework

College level work brought to HIU on a transcript from another regionally accredited college or university by a student transferring to HIU will be accepted, counted for degree credit, and recorded on the student’s transcript with the following stipulations: a) only coursework with a grade of C or better will qualify for transfer. b) only non-vocational college coursework will qualify for transfer. c) pre-college, remedial work will not qualify for transfer

Evaluation of Qualifying Transfer Coursework

All transfer coursework will be evaluated in terms of whether or not it meets the specified requirements of the student’s HIU degree program. “Qualifying” (see #1; a, b, c above) transfer coursework that does not meet specified requirements in a chosen degree program, including the specified standard number of free electives in that degree program, will be counted as additional free electives and added to the total number of units required to complete the degree.

Example: Consider a case in which a student transfers 60 qualifying units into HIU: after transcript evaluation, it is determined that 48 units meet specified requirements in the student’s chosen Bacehlor’s degree program which, in this case, requires a minimum of 122 units. This includes 12 units that fill standard free elective slots in the 122 unit degree.

In such a case, the other 12 transferred units will now be counted as additional free electives, adding 12 units to the total units required to complete the degree so that this particular student must complete 134 units to finish their degree. Therefore, all of the student’s qualifying transfer units are counted toward their degree and will also be counted in calculations of units toward degree for athletic eligibility and financial aid eligibility.
