During the period of the research, Hazon and Isabella Freedman merged and Teva joined the enlarged Hazon. During the initial period of this research, the New York Ride was all run by the legacy organization Hazon. Adamah Farm Vacations, Adamah Fellowship, Jewish Greening Fellowship and ADVA network were all run by the legacy organization Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center. Teva Residential Programs and the Teva Seminar were all programs of Surprise Lake Camp. 3 This case study deliberately focuses on participants in the 11 programs funded by UJA-Federation of New York, regardless of their residence (whether within the catchment area of the UJA-Federation of New York or not), in order to learn about the work of these programs overall. 4 The ADVA Network—a combination of Adamah and Teva—provides alumni of the Teva Learning Center and Adamah Fellowship with support, direction and increased ability to find their niche as leaders in the American Jewish Community. 5 UJA-Federation of New York uses the term “gateway” to mean synagogues, camps, Hillels, JCCs and Ys which serve as entry points, or gateways, into the Jewish community. The Campership Incentive Program (CIP) seeks to increase the number of Jewish children enjoying transformative experiences at Jewish overnight summer camp. This is done by providing financial incentives to first-time campers who are not currently participating in an immersive daily Jewish experience. The Foundation for Jewish Camp, in partnership with dozens of Jewish community federations, camps and camp movements across North America, provides incentive grants of $1,000 to first-time campers who attend a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp. Camp sessions must last 19 consecutive days. What are the eligibility requirements for applicants? Eligibility is based on several factors: where you live, past camp experience and the grade your camper will be entering in the fall of 2010. These factors are ultimately determined by your local sponsoring agency, but in general, eligibility requirements that are adhered to by the majority of partners are as follows: 1. Campers must have never previously attended a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp for 19 consecutive days or longer before applying for the grant.

One recent example is very telling. This alum called from California and said we want our son to go to SLC. Great, we said, but have you considered that this will mean cross country flights at the beginning and end of each stay and for Visiting Days? We told this alum that we would be delighted to have his son in camp, but suggested that he first check out a couple of California Jewish camps that we think highly of. A few weeks later, the same caller: we checked out the other camps, thanks for the suggestion, and we want our son to go to SLC. Which he now does. There are other alums who remember camp fondly but hesitate to consider it for their children or grandchildren because they don’t realize how much SLC has changed since they were campers. If you are one of those alums whose impression of SLC is frozen in your mind, we want to make sure you understand what things are really like today.
