Matt Oliveto Rob Lemoncelli May 6-8, 2011 Memorial Park, Quakertown, PA The MAC (Middle Atlantic Conferences) was organized on December 11, 1912 as a loose confederation of col- leges. The fi rst annual meeting occurred on May 16, 1913, followed by the fi rst conference track meet at Lafayette College the next day.

The Middle Atlantic Association, formed in March 1925, was the fi rst to name a Middle Atlantic Champion. In 1952 the conference unifi ed and recognized competition in all sports. Many of the universities left the conference in 1974 when the NCAA created Divisions I, II, and III. The MAC added women’s athletics in 1978.

Major changes occurred in 1993 when 10 schools left to form their own association; their departure served as a catalyst for the remaining 16 schools to form a streamlined, effi cient, dual-league organization. This “new look” was part of a national movement to consolidate similar institutions for competitive athletic opportunities while increasing presidential involvement in the setting of athletic policy.

In 1999, spurred by changes in the NCAA championship structure, the MAC formed as an umbrella for three conferences - Freedom, Commonwealth, and Middle Atlantic.

During the fi rst 76 years, a number of Athletic Directors served as conference coordinator on a part-time basis. David B. Eavenson served as President, Publicity Director and Executive Director from 1972 to 1988. The Confer- ence entered a new era in 1988 with the selection of Nathan Salant as its fi rst full-time Executive Director. Linda Hopple succeeded him from 1993-2000; Ken Andrews, the current administrator, assumed the position in May 2000.

Current members are , , , Delaware Valley College, DeSales University, Eastern University, Elizabethtown College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, the College at Florham, King’s College, , , , Messiah College, Miseri- cordia University, , and .

Currently, the MAC sponsors competition in 11 men’s sports: baseball, , cross country, football, , indoor track and fi eld, lacrosse, soccer, , , and outdoor track and fi eld. The 12 women’s sports are: basketball, cross country, fi eld hockey, golf, indoor track and fi eld, lacrosse, soccer, , swimming, tennis, outdoor track and fi eld, and .
