TULIP, an Internship Program with ULBs across the country Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal `Nishank’ and MoS (I/C), Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Hardeep. S. Puri jointly launched a first of its kind initiative `The Urban Learning Internship Program (TULIP)’ - A program for providing internship opportunities to fresh graduates in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Smart Cities across the country. It is expected that 25000 graduates who have completed B. Tech, B. Arch, B. Plan, BSc etc. can apply within 18 months from date of their graduation will receive opportunity of internship in the first year itself. 2. India to join UK-led virtual Global Vaccine Summit The Summit was hosted by the United Kingdom (UK). Almost 50 countries including the business leaders, UN agencies, civil society, government ministers, Heads of State and country leaders participated in the virtual Summit which aims to raise at least USD 7.4 billion for vaccine R&D. In 2014, from being a recipient country, India became a donor country and has contributed around USD 12 million to date. It is an established fact that 50-60 per cent of the world's vaccine production is currently in India, which makes it an important partner in that area. 3. Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) – Annual Report [July, 2018 – June, 2019] The National Statistical Office (NSO) released the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for July 2018 to June 2019.India’s unemployment rate fell to 5.8% during 2018-19 from 6.1% during the same period of 2017-18. The urban unemployment rate reduced to 7.7% from 7.8%. The rural unemployment reduced to 5% from 5.3%. The labour force 1 | P a g e www.iemias.com participation rate rose to 37.5% during 2018-19 from 36.9% of 2017- 18. The female participation rate also improved going up to 18.6% in 2018-19 from 17.5% the year before. The worker population ratio also increased, to 35.3% as against 34.7% in the 2017-18. 4. Russia races to clean up massive oil spill in Siberia Russia is scrambling to clean up an oil spill in the thermoelectric power plant which is located near Norilsk city (known as the country’s nickel capital)in northern Siberia, after an oil leak that began at the end of May was found to have released over 21,000 tons of diesel into the The Ambarnaya river flows to the Pyasino lake and river Pyasina, which connects it to the Kara Sea, a part of the Arctic Ocean. Over 14,000 square meters were contaminated by the oil spill, while some progress has been made in cleaning the most-affected areas. Experts said the affected area could take years to fully recover. Damages to the Arctic waterways due to the spill could be at least over UDS 76 million. The estimate does not include atmospheric damage due to greenhouse gases and soil pollution. 5. SUMERU-PACS -- that helps wearers of PPE to feel comfortable without sweating developed by DRDO DRDO developed a personal air circulation system which can be used inside the PPE as a small backpack of approximately 500 grams weight which works well at an ambient temperature of 39 degrees Celsius and keeps wearer comfortable and cool without sweating. The system is suitable for indoors especially for doctors and other medical staff wearing PPE cover all six hours in the hospitals. The device draws the outside air with the help of a filter and the moist air goes out from the front face opening thereby, cooling neck and head area. 2 | P a g e www.iemias.com 6. Cabinet approves MoU between India and Bhutan on Cooperation in the areas of Environment Keeping in view the bilateral interest of both sides and mutually agreed priorities, a Memorandum of Understanding covering the following areas of environment has been considered: Air; Waste; Chemical Management; Climate Change; Any other areas jointly decided upon. This Memorandum of Understanding shall enter into force on the date of signature and shall continue to remain in force for a period of ten years. The Participants intend to encourage organizations, private companies, government institutions at all levels and research institutions on both sides to establish cooperation activities aimed at fulfilling the objectives of the Memorandum of Understanding. 7. Mastercard, Axis Bank and Worldline launch Soft POS to enable smartphones to be used as POS devices Mastercard, Axis Bank and Worldline launched Soft POS to become the first financial payments service in India to transform everyday smartphones into merchant Point of Sale terminals. The merchant community can start using Soft POS almost instantly as the online registration process with the acquiring bank takes less than 30 minutes. Soft POS is not just a payments app and its innovative features include: E-Khata: The app can record and store credit transactions. It can send payment ledgers along with a payment link to the customer at the end of the month to ensure accuracy and ease of payment. Cash Register: It can record cash transactions making it convenient for the merchant to keep a record of all expenses. Online Dukkan: Merchants can use Soft POS app to create a catalogue of items available and offer convenience in ordering. Zoho Business Solutions: As part of Mastercard's partnership with Zoho, merchants who use Soft POS can run their entire 3 | P a g e www.iemias.com business online with Zoho's 45+ integrated suite of business apps at an exclusive price. 8. GAIL (India) and Energy Efficiency Services sign MoU for development of Trigeneration projects in India Trigeneration or Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP) typically involves natural gasfired generators to produce electricity. The waste heat from flue gas is recovered to produce hot water / steam which in turn used for heating purposes and also in absorption chillers for cooling. Under this MOU, GAIL & EESL shall jointly undertake studies and if found viable, 50:50 joint venture between GAIL & EESL will be incorporated for undertaking Trigeneration projects. 9. GoI approved funds for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha, Meghalaya, Assam & Bihar Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which aims to provide “Functional Household Tap Connection” (FHTC) to 18 Crore rural households of the country by the year 2024. Arunachal Pradesh plans to provide tap connection to all rural households by March 2023. Puducherry plans to provide tap connections to all rural households in 2020-21. Centre allocates over Rs 1,832.66 cr for implementation of JJM in Bihar, Rs 1,407 crore for implementation of JJM in Assam, Rs 812 crore for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha and Rs 175 crore for implementation of JJM in Meghalaya. 10. Veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee passes away Filmmaker Basu Chatterjee, best known for films like Chhoti Si Baat, Rajnigandha, Baaton Baaton Mein, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla and Chameli Ki Shaadi, TV serial Byomkesh Bakshi in Doordarshan passed away today on June 4, 2020, in Mumbai, following age-related ailments. He was 90 years old. He received the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare in 1992 for his film Durga. 4 | P a g e www.iemias.com .
