SCHEIBER N.A.S.A., Ames Research Ccnter, Moffett Field, California 31- Abstract-~Ieasurements of specific gravity by the method of liquid flotation have been made on about 6000 tektites from 18 different localities in Australasia, from 1 locality in Texas and 2 in Czechoslovakia. Comparison of specific-gravity population polygons for various localities has led to the unanticipated conclusion that the amtralite population in southwest Australia is essentially the same as the philippinite population, rather than the population elsewhere in Australia. The javanite population appears closely related to certain populations in Australia. In several localities the presence of two superimposed populations is demonstrated. The specific- gravity evidence indicates that the Australasian tektites represent a single event comprising many distinguishable clusters, some of which have partially overlapped. INTRODUCTION #e AT the turn of this century, the Austrian geologist SUESS(1900) gave the collective name of “tektites” to three widely separated groups of natural glass objects then known to be scattered over parts of Australia, Czechoslovakia and the island of Billiton. -

Devotion, Daring and Sense of Destiny: David Headon ∗ Surveyors of the Early Commonwealth During the decade that preceded Federation, the Australian colonies entertained a number of visiting dignitaries and international celebrities curious about the former British convict gulag that had so spectacularly reversed its grim early fortunes. None of the visitors was as popular as the American writer and humourist Samuel Clemens—Mark Twain. In Australia on a world-wide lecturing tour in 1895 because of some ill-chosen investments, Twain took an avid interest in Australian culture and history. In the publication of his travels that followed soon after his southern sojourn, Following the Equator (1897), he observed with characteristic flair: Australian history is almost always picturesque; indeed, it is so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer, and so it pushes the other novelties into second and third place. It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies. And all of a fresh new sort, no mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities; but they are all true, they all happened.1 When the many Australians who read Following the Equator over the next one hundred years read this paragraph, they must surely have reflected, with satisfaction and not a little pride, on a succession of historical milestones: the transformational Lachlan Macquarie years, for example; the opening up of the interior; John McDouall Stuart’s epic explorer quest; Lola Montez defiantly horse-whipping a critical newspaper editor in booming gold-rush Ballarat; Eureka; the world firsts of the Australian labour movement; the sporting achievements of the cricketers, the rowers, Archer and Carbine; the Australian Constitution story; Federation itself; Gallipoli; and Kokoda, to name a sample. -

All of these were linked to an extraordinary global disaster in a catastrophic event in Thailand and East Asia. These evidences were belonged to and superimposed on the known Australasian tektites strewn field that covers 1/10 of the Earth's surface.
