SOFTBALL HISTORY

DeKalb County served as one of the main forerunners in the introduction of fastpitch softball as a sanctioned sport on the high school level. While the slowpitch version of the game has held state championships since 1981, fastpitch softball did not make its inau- gural appearance until the fall of 1993. Local schools dominated the field in that first season, as 18 of the 21 teams hailed from DeKalb County. Marist, Berkmar and Meadowcreek were the remaining three entrants. Dunwoody put together an impressive as the initial powerhouse in the sport, finishing either first or second in the state in each of the first four years. Co -coaches Lynn Maddox and Cheryl Finke guided the Lady Wildcats to a super 101 -15 record during that stretch. Dun- woody won at least 17 games every year from 1993 -98. The initial 1993 campaign featured a memorable battle between Dunwoody and Meadowcreek for what was then listed as the Metro Championships. Dunwoody opened that tournament in dominating fashion, posting three straight shutout triumphs over Lithonia (9 -0), Redan (6 -0) and Berkmar (5 -0) to advance to the championship round. Matched up against Meadowcreek in best -of -three series, the Lady Wildcats fought to the very end before coming up just short in their pursuit of the first and only metro crown. Dunwoody actually gained the early advantage by pulling out a 2 -1 nailbiter in the first game of the showdown. Mead- owcreek, however, bounced back to sweep the last two contests by the narrow respective margins of 12 -9 and 2 -1. The Lady Wildcats used that heart -breaking defeat as inspiration in what would prove to be the first of their two state cham- pionship runs in 1994. After posting a super 22 -3 record in the regular season, Dunwoody rolled past Lassiter (3 -1), Tucker (13 -2), Brookwood (3 - 0) and Brookwood (7 -3) again in a perfect 4 -0 state march. Overpowering sophomore southpaw Adrienne Fortmann capped a stellar 15 -2 season on the mound, striking out six and allowing only two hits in picking up the pitching victory. Junior shortstop Sabrina Touchberry (3 -4, 2 RS), sophomore centerfielder Amy Thompson (2 -4) and junior third baseman Megan Galhouse (2 -4), meanwhile, shined brightest offensively for the Lady Wildcats. Other key players for Dunwoody included junior catcher Nancy Diamond , sophomore -second baseman Ashley Fawcett , junior leftfielder Shana Vidal , freshman first baseman Melissa Chastney and freshman rightfielder Jessica Tucker . Coach Pat Floyd and the Tucker Lady Tigers nearly joined Dunwoody in the championship round, dropping a 9 -3 heart - breaker in 11 innings to Meadowcreek in the semifinals. Freshman pitcher Jill Wilkinson (20 -5), senior shortstop Krissy Streid and junior outfielder Teresa Eubanks led the charge for a Tucker squad that went 3 -2 at state and finished 24 -5 overall. Redan also qualified for state in 1994, dropping two straight tough decisions to Brookwood (2 -1) and Meadowcreek (2 -0). Senior southpaw Mandy Smart was brilliant on the mound in defeat for the Lady Raiders. Dunwoody nearly earned a second straight state championship in 1995, settling for runnerup honors after a stunning loss to Douglas County in the championship round. The Lady Wildcats whipped Berkmar (9 -1), Brookwood (7 -3) and Parkview (8 -1) to advance to the final, before dropping two consecutive decisions of 3 -0 and 8 -2 to Douglas County in finishing 29 -5 overall. A brilliant group of seniors, though, made up for that disappointment by climbing to the top of the state field for the second time in three years at the 1996 AAAA tournament. Maddox was able to retire from the coaching ranks in style, as Dunwoody won three straight one -run decisions over Lassit- er (2 -1), Shaw (1 -0) and Berkmar (3 -2) and then easily rolled past Lassiter (6 -0) again in the championship contest in wrapping up a memorable 27 -4 season. Fortmann struck out three and allowed only one in the final blitzing of Lassiter, while Thompson, Tucker and freshman shortstop Nikki Reed paced a balanced offens that received key contributions from several individuals. Chamblee also earned a state berth on the AAA level in 1996, losing consecutive tough decisions to Columbus (5 -4) and Douglas County (6 -0) while getting eliminated in two games and finishing 19 -10 overall for the season. Tucker next ended a four -year dry spell for DeKalb County schools by advancing to the state Class AAAA tournament in 2001. The Lady Tigers posted a 1 -2 record at that battle on the way to finishing 31 -4 overall. Super junior pitcher Christy Wahl established a new county record of 445 in leading a stellar campaign. Martin Luther King Jr. garnered the next state berth for DeKalb County schools while advancing to the AAA tournament in 2004. Coach Paris Burd ’s Lions went 1 -2 there and finished 24 -10 overall. The 2017 season offered the biggest highlight in many years, as four DeKalb County squads advanced to the second round of the state tournament for the first time in county history. Region 5 -AAAAA led the way with three teams moving on, as league champion Arabia Mountain, No. 2 seed Chamblee and No. 3 entrant Miller Grove advanced and Dunwoody impressed in a first round sweep as well. Both Arabia Mountain (23) and Chamblee (22) established school records for single season victories in 2017 to add to the long list of impressive achievements on the local level.

2018 SOFTBALL IN REVIEW

DeKalb County established a new school district record for state tournament qualifiers in 2018, as nine local squads earned invitations to the big dance in a memorable campaign. Coach Alan Loper ’s Chamblee Bulldogs led the way, claiming a region title with a 5 -1 record in Region 5 -AAAAA while also serving as the lone team to advance to the second round of state. Winless in school history in state tournament competition as of two years ago at 0 -16, Chamblee has now registered two victories in each of the last two seasons in improving to 4 -20 overall. The Lady Bulldogs took care of Clarke Central in impressive fashion in the first round of the AAAAA state draw last fall, romping to a doubleheader sweep on the opening day by the respective scores of 10 -0 and 17 -4. Chamblee then hosted Villa Rica in the second round, falling by the narrow margins of 8 -6 and 8 -3 in a tough battle that left the Lady Bulldogs with the strong final overall record of 18 -8. Several players turned in banner efforts in leading the way individually for Chamblee, led by senior shortstop Rachel Lovejoy and junior second baseman Mary Axelson . Lovejoy put the finishing touches on a spectacular high school career, ranking among the county leaders in batting average (.544), runs scored (38), RBI (39), homers (5), doubles (7) and triples (5). Axelson, meanwhile, took over the team lead in batting average (.583), doubles (10) and hits (42) and also netted 35 runs scored, 32 RBI, two doubles and one triple. Other team offensive standouts included freshman pitcher Margaret Axelson (.394 BA; 27 RS; 14 RBI; 5 2B), junior catch- er -outfielder Ansley Mepham (.351 BA; 19 RBI; 9 RS; 3 2B; 2 3B), senior outfielder -third baseman Anna Burke (.344 BA; 18 RS; 16 RBI; 6 2B), sophomore outfielder Brooke George (.319 BA; 15 RS; 13 RBI) and junior third baseman -shortstop Grace Brown (.301 BA; 24 RS; 15 RBI). Margaret Axelson, on the other hand, served as the ace of a deep and talented pitching rotation, posting an 11 -6 record, 3.25 ERA, 86 and 30 walks over 103 1/3 innings. Mary Axelson (2 -1; 4.14 ERA; 17 SO; 3 BB; 23 2/3 IP) and Brown (4 -1; 0.98 ERA; 9 SO; 2 BB; 14 2/3 IP) provided two top reserve options. Arabia Mountain, Southwest DeKalb and Miller Grove in that order rounded out the list of state tournament qualifiers from Region 5 -AAAAA. Coach Eric Hoxie ’s Arabia Mountain squad lost only to Chamblee (4 -3) in going 5 -1 and claiming the second place seeding for state from 5 -AAAAA. The Lady Rams dropped a doubleheader to Walnut Grove on the opening day of state, falling by the respective scores of 12 - 0 and 14 -2 to finish the year with a 10 -15 overrall mark. Coach Bernice Foreman ’s Southwest DeKalb unit finished third in the final regular season 5 -AAAAA standings, losing to Arabia Mountain (10 -2) in going 5 -1 in the league. The Lady Panthers traveled to Buford in the first round and came up short in both ends of a doubleheader, falling by the respective scores of 19 -0 and 15 -3 in finishing 13 -10 overall for the year. Miller Grove posted a 3 -3 mark in taking fourth place in Region 5 -AAAAA, losing to Chamblee (14 -6), Southwest DeKalb (6 -2) and Arabia Mountain (8 -0). Coach Terrence Canty ’s Lady Wolverines earned a road trip to Loganville for the first round of state, falling 10 -0 and 14 -1 in a doubleheader to finish the season with a 10 -10 final overall record. Lakeside returned to the state tournament after a rare year away in 2017, securing the fourth seed out of a rugged Region 7 - AAAAAAA race with a 2 -6 record. Coach Lauren Levin ’s Lady Vikings face the challenging task of traveling to Mill Creek in the opening round of the state Class AAAAAAA draw, getting swept in an opening day twinbill by the respective scores of 17 -0 and 18 -0 in finishing the year with a 4 -14 overall mark. Three DeKalb County squads garnered state tournament berths on the AAAAAA, led by surprising Region 4 -AAAAAA champion Martin Luther King Jr. Coach Leenard Williams and the Lady Lions romped to a dominating region tournament triumph, blasting Mundy’s Mill (15 -3), Stephenson (14 -2) and Forest Park (6 -4) by the cumulative margin of 35 -9. Martin Luther King Jr. earned the right to host Northside Warner Robins in the first round of state, coming up short in a doubleheader on opening day by the respective scores of 17 -2 and 13 -0 in finishing 12 -6 overall. Stephenson also advanced to state out of Region 4 -AAAAAA, nailing down the No. 4 seed in Bridget Smith ’s inaugural campaign as Lady Jaguar head coach. The Lady Jaguars hit the road to take on Lee County in the first round of state, dropping a doubleheader by the scores of 17 - 0 and 19 -2 in finishing the year with a 14 -11 -1 record. Coach Kerry Brown and the Dunwoody Lady Wildcats once again had to navigate through loaded Region 7 -AAAAAA, finishing 9 -5 on the way to nailing down a No. 3 seed for the state Class AAAAAA tournament. The Lady Wildcats traveled to powerful Harrison in the first round, turning in a strong effort but failing to score in getting swept by the respective scores of 11 -0 and 3 -0 in finishing the year at 19 -10 overall. Coach Krystal Cox ’s Cedar Grove team rounded out the list of DeKalb County qualifiers, placing fourth in the final regular season Region 5 -AAA standings. State participants for the fifth straight year, the Lady Saints lost to Jefferson by the respective margins of 15 -0 and 12 -0 in posting a 7 -12 final overall record.

34 RED RALLIES TO DEFEAT BLUE IN ANNUAL ALL -STAR SOFTBALL SHOWDOWN

Dunwoody pitcher Samantha Moss struck out 16 batters in nine innings to lead the Blue Senior All - Stars to a 10 -4 win over the Red Senior All -Stars in the 14th annual DCSD Senior All -Star Softball Classic at Chamblee. Moss came up just one strikeout short of the All -Star record of 17 set by Imani Gayle of Southwest DeKalb in her 2010 pitching victory. It ties Moss with Southwest DeKalb’s Jada Jefferies who had 16 strikeouts in the inaugural All -Star Softball Classic in 2005. The Blue All -Stars took the lead in the top of the first inning as Stephenson’s Denaudia Smartt , Dun- woody’s Walker Wicklund and Chamblee’s Rachel Lovejoy had three consecutive hits with one out. Wicklund and Lovejoy picked up the RBIs for the 2 -0 lead and the Blue never trailed in the game. Decatur’s Lauren Smith would finish the inning by striking out the side to keep the Blue within striking dis- tance. A wild pitch in the bottom of the inning allowed Smith to score and pull the Red within 2 -1 after one complete inning. Moss reached on an error with one out in the second inning, as her infield grounder scored Jasmine Walker of Stephenson to make it 3 -1. Kamoni Hardaway of Stone Mountain drove in a run on a fly ball to right, which was dropped to score Lovejoy. Chamblee’s Anna Burke came around to score on the error to make it 5 -1 after three complete. The Red had just one of its 10 batters from the second through fourth innings reach base (error) against Moss who struck out six over that span. A two -run single by Moss and an infield grounder by Lithonia’s Daven Nesbit t pushed three runs across for the Blue in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 8 -1. Martin Luther King’s Khaiyla Carter stroked a RBI single to right in the bottom of the fifth to score Decatur’s Haley Russell who doubled ahead of Carter. Moss worked out trouble with a pair of strikeouts in the inning. A pair of errors and stolen base allowed Lovejoy to make it around the bases in the sixth without the aid of hit to make it 9 -2. Decatur’s Sydney Pettus hit a rope into right -center field for a triple to score Miller Grove’s Arieyana Zachery in the bottom of the sixth. Pettus then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 9 -4 game. Southwest DeKalb’s Ajah Gaston reached on an error in the seventh and then scored on an error for the final run of the game to make it 10 -4. Moss allowed just three base runners over the final three innings while striking out four to wrap up the victory on the pitching mound. Most Valuable Player awards went to Moss (16 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 RBI) for the Blue and Decatur’s Smith (3 -5 at the plate, 8 strikeouts, no walks on the mound) for the Red. Smith was the leading hitter for the Red at 3 -5. Walker Wicklund (3 -5, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Rachel Lovejoy (3 -5, 1 RBI) led the way for the Blue. Moss added three RBI on one hit as well. The Red/Blue series started in 2013 after eight seasons of a North/South (4 -4) matchup with the Blue’s win cutting to 4 -2 in favor of the Red which had won the last two matchups.

REGULAR SEASON AND TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION:

A. Fast Pitch Softball is a state championship event organized on a Region basis in seven classifications. In Class A, there will be separate championships for public and private schools. Beginning and ending dates for practice and competition can be found at the front of this publication.

B. All softball games will be played by the rules as published by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

C. The maximum number of softball games allowed (not including region or state playoffs) shall be: twenty -six (26) games either head -to -head competition or in invitational tournament games. 1. Region tournaments shall be structured so that no school will play more than eight (8) games in that tournament. 2. Schools may not enter any softball tournament other than the region tournament or state elimination series unless such tournament has been approved by the GHSA Executive Director. 3. Sub -varsity teams are allowed to play 70 percent of their respective varsity team’s regular season games. Sub -varsity teams shall not schedule a tournament after they have reached their 70 percent game restriction. 4. Contracts are required for all GHSA member school fastpitch softball games, including invitational tournaments.

D. All varsity softball games shall be played with officially -dressed officials who are registered under the GHSA plan for the regis- tration of officials. The assignment of officials for regular -season games, invitational tournaments, and sub -region and region tourna- ments will be made by the GHSA office. 1. The GHSA will assign one or more associations to each school for their games. 2. The school and the local association(s) will sign a contract for the games that are assigned.

E. The following rule “State Adoptions” have been approved for GHSA play in softball: 1. The game will end when: (a) a team has completed three turns at bat and is fifteen (15) runs behind. (b) a team has completed four turns at bat and is twelve (12) runs behind. (c) a team has completed five or more turns at bat and is eight (8) runs behind. 2. The courtesy runner rule has been adopted. NOTE: Participation as a courtesy runner does not constitute entry into the game, and does not count as a game played. 3. The use of a double first base is recommended. 4. The suspended game rule will be used. (a) When a game is stopped before it becomes a legal game, it is considered to be “no contest” and any replay will begin from the first inning. (b) When a game is stopped after it becomes a legal game and a winner can be determined, the game is completed. (c) When a game is stopped after it becomes a legal game and a winner can not be determined, any replay will begin from the point of interruption. 5. Termination of the game due to weather, unplayable conditions, or mechanical malfunctions: (a) The umpires may halt play for up to two (2) hours when conditions do not allow play to continue. 1. The two -hour interruption(s) is cumulative 2. The game must be terminated when the two -hour time period has elapsed. If the first game of a doubleheader is terminated, the second game will be postponed. 3. The two -hour period does not include time needed to prepare the field for the resumption of play. (b) Umpires must wait for at least 30 minutes before terminating a game for unplayable field conditions. 6. In any softball game, if a team does not show up within 30 minutes of the scheduled game time, a forfeit shall be declared unless the delay is unavoidable and the visiting team notifies the home team. In emergency situations, the game may be started late, or may be rescheduled. 7. The tie -breaker procedure for extra -inning games will be used. Procedure: At the beginning of the tenth inning (and all subsequent half -innings), the player who was the last batter in the previous inning is placed on second base and regular rules apply thereafter. The game continues until a winner is determined. Exception: In Invitational Tournament games with a “time limit” in place, the tie -breaker would start in the subsequent inning. 8. Only game -essential personnel are permitted within the confines of the team’s dugout and shall be held to the same level of accountability as the coaching staff and players. 9. Sub -varsity games may have a time limit instead of playing seven innings as long as the guidelines are agreed upon before the start of the game.

36 REGULAR SEASON AND TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

10. Varsity games played in invitational tournaments may have time limits as follows: (a) No game may be less than five innings regardless of the time limit (4.5 innings if home team is ahead.) (b) No time limit may be less than 90 minutes. (c) If the game is tied when the time limit expires, the International Tie -breaker must be implemented until a winner is determined. 11. Same -day multiple games, using the same umpires, shall receive the doubleheader game fee listed in the Appendix “F” Game Fee Chart. 12. Host schools are required to post the current USA SOFTBALL list of “Non -Approved” bats in both dugouts during GHSA sanctioned games .
