I would like to dedicate this edition to Willie Rioli Jr and Councillor LJ De Santis and Councillor Puruntatameri. Willie is the first Tiwi Islander to share with us the joys of seeing the Premiership Cup. The Premiership Cup travelled from Perth to Darwin across the Tiwi Islands. On behalf of all Tiwi people living on Melville and Bathurst Islands, we thank you. We thank his mother Georgina and his father Willie Sr for making their son's trip back home a memorable one, I was recently elected as Vice President of the Local Government Association of the NT (LGANT) Executive Commitee. I attended my first meeting in Alice Springs from the 19 to 22 November, 2018. The new elected role with LGANT offers new opportunities for our region as we continue to invest in the work we do across the two (2) islands that we can be proud of. I continue to support the CEO as we work together, as our key focus is about service delivery and how we can best support our communities, once again as a strong local government entity. On this page, we celebrate two of our strong leaders forging ahead over the years for better local government governance. Both Cr De Santis celebrated 15 years and Cr Puruntatameri celebrated 10 years. As the Mayor, I am proud of both Councillors achievements and value their ongoing support to me as Mayor. If you see Lynette and Pirrawayingi congratulate them on their achievements and let them know we as Tiwi's are very proud of them both. Many of us will be enjoying time with our families. It will be a time of reflection as it has been a full 2018. I have attached below a photo of our Mayor as it is the very first time a member from the Tiwi Islands representing the Council has been elected and appointed as the Vice President of LGANT at an Executive level. On behalf of Councillors and staff, I want to congratulate Gawin on his appointment. I look forward to continuing my support as he goes through the phase and breadth in understanding local government as the Vice President. I appreciate all the C E O M A R I O N S C R Y M G O U R support I have received from the Mayor who have always offered me the support, especially as the CEO where harsh decisions have been made. I want to also celebrate with the community and our very own Willie Rioli Jr when he kept a promise after West Coast Eagles won the 2018 AFL. Willie said on national TV after West Coast won the 2018 AFL Grand Final he would bring the Premiership Cup to his homeland, the Tiwi Islands. The first time a Premiership Cup has travelled and been touched by some many adoring fans. Willie has proven that dreams can come true and our young people need to believe they too can bring a Premiership Cup home for us to touch and share in the joys of winning. The Wet Season is here and parts the road on Melville Island had to be closed. Log trucks have ripped up the road making it very dangerous to drive. Unfortunately the Pirlangimpi Office has been broken into and we ask the community to help keep our community and the buildings safe. Break-in costs money and services suffer. The end of year Community Safety Meeting is being held on the 10 December, hosted by the Mayor. We hope to see our stakeholders who have supported Council and the wider community throughout 2018 attend. The community has a new Police Officer In Charge. Jason (Jack) a big welcome, his wife and daughter, as well as the team. The Mayor and I look forward to our weekly catch ups creating a respected working relationship. TIRC Mayor, Gawin Tipiloura, and LGANT Executive Members.

Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

  • One of the Boys: the (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career
One of the Boys: The (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career Ms. Kasey Symons PhD Candidate 2019 The Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities (ISILC), Victoria University, Australia. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Abstract: This PhD via creative work comprises an exegesis (30%) and accompanying novel, Fan Fatale (70%), which seek to contribute a creative and considered representation of some women who are fans of elite male sports, Australian Rules football in particular. Fictional representations of Australian Rules football are rare. At the time of submission of this thesis, only three such works were found that are written by women aimed to an older readership. This project adds to this underrepresented space for women writing on, and contributing their experiences to, the culture of men’s football. The exegesis and novel creatively addresses the research question of how female fans relate to other women in the sports fan space through concepts of gender bias, performance, and social surveillance. Applying the lens of autoethnography as the primary methodology to examine these notions further allows a deeper, reflexive engagement with the research, to explore how damaging these performances can be for the relationships women can have to other women. In producing this exegesis and accompanying novel, this PhD thesis contributes a new and creative way to explore the gendered complications that surround the sports fan space for women. My novel, Fan Fatale, provides a narrative which raises questions about the complicit positions women can sometimes occupy in the name of fandom and conformity to expected gendered norms.
