SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 15 5/5/2021 1:03:53 PM It’s easy to feel sad about the past or to worry about the future. But as cool as the idea of time travel is, we only have control over what’s happening right now— the present. Mindfulness—focusing on the present— means we experience the good things right in front of us!

1. Wherever you are, get still and take three deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Notice your breath moving in and out.

2. Look around for 5 things you can see and say them out loud. For example: “I see the sunshine coming in the window. . . I see my shoes …”

3. Think about 4 things you can touch and say them out loud.

4. Listen for 3 things you can hear and say them out loud.

5. Pay attention to 2 things you can smell, or think of 2 of your favorite smells, and say them out loud.

6. Think about 1 thing you can taste, or a favorite thing to taste, and say it out loud.

7. To finish, take three more deep breaths.

SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 16 5/5/2021 1:03:53 PM You can also turn the 5-4-3-2-1 Game into a fun craft!

Œ Trace around your hand in the space below. Number the thumb and fingers from 5 to 1. Ž Write or draw the 5 things you can see next to the finger with the 5 on it. Continue doing the same with the 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. Make it as colorful as you like!

SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 17 5/5/2021 1:03:53 PM The Magic of Breathing One of the best ways we can find calm, even when stressful stuff is happening, is to have control over our breathing. Here are some fun and easy breathing games you can play when you’d like a moment of calm in your day.

Breathing out Colors

Think of a color that makes you happy.

Close your eyes, and take a deep breath in through your nose.

As you slowly breathe out through your mouth, imagine filling the room with that color.

Keep breathing in and out, imagining that with each breath out, you are adding more and more of your happy color to the room.

The Beach Ball

Imagine you are holding a large beach ball.

Clasp your hands together underneath your imaginary beach ball, near your waist.

Keep your hands together and rotate them around your beach ball, breathing in through your nose, until your hands are in front of your face.

Now you’re going to try to deflate that beach ball! Keep your hands clasped together and push straight down toward your waist, breathing out through your mouth as your hands go down.

Repeat breathing with these motions for as long as you’d like.

SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 18 5/5/2021 1:03:53 PM Fly Like an Eagle The Magic of Breathing Pretend you are a majestic eagle. You’re standing on the edge of your nest and getting ready to take flight. Stand or sit with your back nice and tall, and your arms down at your side.

Lift your arms wide out to your sides, breathing in as your eagle wings come up and catch the updraft and you soar in the sky.

Slowly and gracefully move your arms down, breathing out as your eagle wings help you fly and float even higher.

Keep on slowly moving your arms up and down, breathing in and out as you go, beating your eagle wings and flying for as long as you like.

Use this space to draw or write what you saw or felt when you did your Magic Breathing!

SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 27 5/5/2021 1:03:54 PM Mind Mapping Ready to wake up your brain?? Mind mapping is a simple, fun, and fantastic tool that has been around for a long time. And it fits the way your brain already works! If you want to learn something new, solve a problem, or set goals, try creating a mind map. Whether you’re facing a challenge like bullying, or you want to plan an event, or you don’t understand something in school, a mind map makes it easier to get a better understanding, connect information, and remember facts. A mind map looks a lot like a nerve cell, with a central core and branches that radiate out from the core. You can use the mind map template here. Or draw your mind map on a separate piece of paper.

How to Create a Mind Map Draw a circle at the center of your page, and then write a word or draw a picture that represents the main topic you want to map. For example, you might want to map what you do in a week, so you might write “my week” in the center. If you like, you could include a little picture, like a calendar. Draw some large branches that connect to your main topic. In our example, you would draw 7 large branches, one for each day of the week. On each large branch, write the name of one day of the week. Connect smaller branches to each large branch. In our example, you would write a word or draw pictures describing the activities you do on each day of the week, and draw smaller branches connecting them to each large branch. You can use both pictures and words on your mind map, along with lots of color. Just so you know: Your brain likes curved lines better than straight ones. Here are some ideas for mind mapping. But really, the topic—and the design—is up to you! Ü Planning a party Ü Your favorite animal, book character, or superhero Ü What you want to do during summer vacation Ü Something you want to learn more about

— 28 —

SLL-2021-BookSummer-Kids-v2.indd 28 5/5/2021 1:03:54 PM You can see mind map images in nature too. Think about lightning, peacock feathers, snowflakes, and the branches Fun of a tree. When you mind map, you join historical Facts geniuses like Albert Einstein, Leonardo DaVinci, and Beethoven!
