Winners at Aratoi A second showing for 2019 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award – Painting and Drawing winning works Masterton is set to host 13 new award-winning artworks at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, fresh from the 2019 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award – Painting and Drawing exhibition in Whakatāne. This is the first time an extended showing has come to the Wairarapa. Co-ordinator Heather Hourigan says the new partnership with Aratoi is an ideal way to reach out to a different community. “Audiences from the Wairarapa would not normally get to see this national award exhibition,” she says. “We also liked the idea that this extended showing would highlight the opportunities open to Wairarapa artists.” This non-acquisitive award invites entries from New Zealand artists each year, and celebrates a unique variety of conceptual, visual, and geographical terrain. The 2019 Painting and Drawing Award attracted 500 entries, exhibited close to 80 finalists, and distributed a prize pool of more than $20,000 to 13 deserving artists. Twelve of the winners were selected by international Guest Judge Chris McAuliffe (Australia); with one winner selected by public vote during the Whakatāne exhibition. “Aratoi invites everyone to attend the opening event on Thursday 11 April at 5pm, featuring a presentation by MMCA Co-ordinator Heather Hourigan,” says Aratoi Director Susanna Shadbolt. For participating artists, the MMCA offers professional development opportunities by showcasing their practice to peers, collectors, critics, museum curators, the media and the community at large. This special showing includes work by Mark Anstis (Ōpōtiki), John Brown (Hastings), Esther Deans (Auckland), Mary Duggan (Whakatāne), Kirsten Ferguson (Dunedin), Toby George King (Auckland), Teresa HR Lane (Auckland), Raewyn Martyn (Wellington), Nicola McCafferty (Wellington), Adrienne Millwood (Lower Hutt), Sena Park (Paihia), Danae Ripley (Auckland), and Lea-Anne Sheather (Whakatāne). -

The pioneering spirit of the Methodists in the 18th and 19th centuries in England and Scotland was brought to New Zealand by Methodist immigrants in the earliest days of the foundation of the new colony, and was carried to Masterton by that kindly man of high ideals, the late Mr. Henry Jones. In 1855 Mr. Jones and some of his family arrived in Masterton and built a home. Mr. Jones then sent to Wellington for the younger members of his family and they departed for Masterton on New Year's Day, 1856, and arrived in the newly-founded township on January 6, after a most trying journey, over rough bush tracks and the dangerous so- called road over the Rimutaka Hill, part of the trip having to be done on pack bullocks with hidden dangers lurking everywhere in treacherous, tracks and bridgeless rivers where mishaps were not always avoided through slips on the tracks (they could not be actually called roads) and the scouring of the rivers. Through the trials and tribulations of that nerve-wracking journey—through swamps and bogs, and fast-flowing rivers and sluggish dangerous creeks—the remainder of the family safely reached the town named after Mr. -

Mr Ruscoe and Mr Moore were then appointed Liquidators of the Trust on 5th February 2019 at 10.50am by Order of the High Court. The Liquidators and Grant Thornton are independent of the Trust. The Liquidators’ Declaration of Independence, Relevant Relationships and Indemnities (“DIRRI”) is attached to this report as Appendix D. WELLINGTON REGIONAL RAIL STRATEGIC DIRECTION 2020 Where we’ve come from Rail has been a key component of the Wellington Region’s transport network for more than 150 years. The first rail line was built in the 1870s between Wellington and Wairarapa. What is now known as the North Island Main Trunk followed in the 1880s, providing a more direct route to Manawatū and the north. Two branch lines were later added. The region has grown around the rail network, as villages have turned into towns and cities. Much of it was actively built around rail as transit-oriented development. Rail has become an increasingly important way for people to move about, particularly to Wellington’s CBD, and services and infrastructure have been continuously expanded and improved to serve an ever-growing population. The region is a leader in per capita use of public transport.
