The short career oF this talented soprano seems to have been due to her involvement in managerial politics. In 1924, she participated in the (certainly belated) First production oF Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, with tenor Jaro Dworsky and bass Emmanuel List, Leo Blech conducting. She also shared the role oF Mimì (Puccini’s La Bohème ) with Meta Seinemeyer and also perFormed Agathe in Der Freischütz . Evidently she was romantically involved with a member oF the Board oF Directors oF the Deutsche Opera who was engaged in a secret merger attempt with the Berlin Volksoper. Marturell acted as a go-between. The merger Failed in late 1924 and on Dec. 24 th , the City oF Berlin stepped in, took over management oF the theater, and Formed the Städische Oper Berlin. Marturell was never subsequently engaged by any Berlin theater. -VRCS CD Notes, 2002. 2930. 12” Red acous. Polyphon 50437 [1985½ac/1989as]. DER FREISCHÜTZ: Und ob die Wolke (v. A student oF PiFFaretti, Mastio was a graduate oF the Paris Conservatoire. Her debut was at the Brussels Théâtre de la Monnaie as Inez in l’Africaine and she remained with the company through 1898. From 1899-1907 she was a Featured artist at the Paris Opéra-Comique and From 1908 at the Paris Opéra. She also appeared elsewhere as a guest. Mastio’s repertoire was extensive and included roles such as Micaëla, Mimí, Louise, Violetta, Philine in Mignon , Bertha in Le Prophète and Elsa, as well as several world creations. VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just the slightest marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the time of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually with a translation of the text or similarly related comments. BESSIE ABOTT [s]. Riverdale, NY, 1878-New York, 1919. Following the death of her father which left her family penniless, Bessie and her sister Jessie (born Pickens) formed a vaudeville sister vocal act, accompanying themselves on banjo and guitar. Upon the recommendation of Jean de Reszke, who heard them by chance, Bessie began operatic training with Frida Ashforth. She subsequently studied with de Reszke him- self and appeared with him at the Paris Opéra, making her debut as Gounod’s Juliette.

FREE ADMISSION Dear friends, Last fall, Third Coast Baroque’s debut series ¡Sarabanda! focused on examining the African and Latin American folk music roots of the sarabande. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world.

Obtained and translated for CWIHP by Malgorzata K. Gnoinska. http://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/113673 Summary: Nowak reports on how the Chinese are using anti-Soviet propaganda at home and abroad to undermine Soviet influence and encourage possible coups. He notes that this is especially seen in Sino-Japanese relations and recent visits by Japanese politicians to China. Original Language: Polish Contents: English Translation Secret Telegram No. 901 From Moscow to Warsaw, January 21, 1974 Szyszko From Kowalczyk's conversation with the Deputy Director in the Far Eastern Department of Foreign Ministry – Dubrovsky 1. Recently, the Soviets have been increasingly following China's international activities. Its nature is becoming brutally anti-Soviet. [Chinese] are increasingly trying to involve various elements and centers in the capitalist countries, as well as those of the Third World. This is taking place in the U.S., Japan, and the FRG. The Chinese are reactivating the activities of pro-Chinese groupings in the communist and workers' movement (the latest example is the FRG). The main task of these groupings is to currently strengthen socialist elements in these countries and to bring about an internal coup, while at the same time to undermine the position of the Soviet Union and the CPSU. According to Dubrovsy, the Chinese are outright assuring the governments in some of these capitalist countries that these Maoist groupings will be loyal to the authorities and are not directed against them.

Clive Brown Although the title of this book may suggest a comprehensive study of nineteenth- century conducting, it in fact contains a collection of eighteen essays by different au- thors, offering a series of highlights rather than a broad and connected picture. The collection arises from an international conference in La Spezia, Italy in 2011, one of a series of enterprising and stimulating annual conferences focusing on aspects of nineteenth-century music that has been supported by the Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini (Lucca), in this case in collaboration with the Società di Concerti della Spezia and the Palazzetto Bru Zane Centre de musique romantique française (Venice).

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. His rare records demonstate a fine voice with considerable ring in the upper register. -Internet sources 1858. 10” Blk. Wien G&T 43832 [891x-Do-2z]. FRÜHLINGSZEIT (Becker). In 1895 he appeared at La Scala in the premieres of Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff and Silvano. Other engagements at La Scala followed, as well as at the Rome Costanzi, 1903 (with Caruso in Aida) and other prominent Italian houses.

Graduate College Faculty Representative ii ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation provides information on how to develop the young dramatic soprano, specifically through more concentrated focus on the breath. Proper breathing is considered the single most important skill a singer will learn, but its methodology continues to mystify multitudes of singers and voice teachers. Voice professionals often write treatises with a chapter or two devoted to breathing, whose explanations are extremely varied, complex or vague. Young dramatic sopranos, whose voices are unwieldy and take longer to develop are at a particular disadvantage for absorbing a solid vocal technique. First, a description, classification and brief history of the young dramatic soprano is discussed along with a retracing of breath methodologies relevant to the young dramatic soprano’s development.
