Early sociologyof sciencewas developedwithin philosophical debates regardingthe natureof science and the social bases of knowledgein general.Karl Mannheimand Max Schelerin the 1920sgave these discussionsa specificallysocio- logical bent. In the 1930s,the themewas made into an explicitsociology of science both by Marxistsand by the functionalistRobert Merton, and both approacheswere followed up duringthe next 30 years. The takeoffof the sociologyof scienceinto a flourishingresearch area occurred in the early 1960s,with the publicationof works by Derek Price and by ThomasKuhn, as well as importantstudies by JosephBen- David and by WarrenHagstrom. In the 1970s,sociology of scienceburgeoned into a varietyof approaches:citation and networkstudies, conflict theory, social construc- tivism,ethnomethologically-influenced studies of laboratorylife, and others.The ide- alized functionalistimage of sciencehas largelygiven way to more critical,relativ- ist, andhighly empirical approaches to science. Just ten years ago, the sociology of science was dominated by and virtually synonymous with "the Mertonian paradigm." Today, it is part of an interdisci- plinary field called "social studies of science" (Spiegel-Rising and Price, 1977). Some of the newer research specialties in the field include ethnographic studies (Knorr, 1981a), discourse analysis (Mulkay, 1980), the study of "rejected knowledge" (Wallis, 1979), relativistic studies of modern natural science (Col- lins, 1981), and ethnomethodology and science (Woolgar, 1981). Citation and network analyses of specialties, sample surveys of various disciplines, and studies in the comparative history of science and mathematics are also in progress. Heated debates have emerged over philosophical and metatheoretical issues. Sig- nificant, though still modest, advances are being made by theorists. The ties be- tween sociology of science and science policy, reflected in works as ideologically distinct and separated in time as J. D. Bernal's (1939) The Social Functions of Science and D. K. Price's (1965) The Scientific Estate, are being refashioned and strengthened. Radical science studies (see, for example, Radical Science Journal), cognitive studies, sociology of mathematics, and the reunification of sociology of science and sociology of knowledge are other important features of the contemporary scene. There are no signs that a unified "paradigm" is emerg- ing that will bring "order" to the field. Rather, diversity and conflict are indica- tors of intellectual vitality and keys to future developments in the sociology of science. Our objective in this paper is to briefly sketch the development of the sociology of science and to describe some of the major areas of research and theory being cultivated today. Emergenceand Growth: Positivism, Marxism, and Functionalism The termpositivist, interpreted broadly, identifies scientists and studentsof sci- ence who claimthat scientificfacts (1) are aboutthe real externalworld, (2) are mediatedonly to some extentby noninductivelogical and mathematical formsof knowledge,and (3) arenot, in any significantsense, dependent on or reflectionsof socialrealities. Early forms of oppositionto positivismare found in the idealistphilosophies of Kantand Hegel. Kant,however, was intenton establishinga soundfoundation for empiricalscience by identifyinga prioricate- goriesof understanding.He imaginedthat this wouldgive scientificlaws the samesort of certaintyhe associatedwith mathematics. Hegel, on the otherhand, was one of the firstmajor philosophers to expressopen hostility to modernsci- ence.He depictedthe scientificworld view as an alienationof the Spiritfrom its trueself. His historicallyoriented critique opened the wayfor Marx'smaterialist argumentthat ideas are sociallydetermined. Marx (Marxand Engels,1846/ 1946:39-41) viewedthe ideasof an epochas consequencesof the organization of the meansof intellectualproduction. Although he (alongwith Engels) helped foundthe sociologyof knowledge,his onlyextended study of a knowledgesystem was his conceptualanalysis of calculus(Marx, 1974). His remarkson the ma- terialbases of knowledgewere primarily aimed at showinghow ideas function as politicalideologies. It is interestingto note thatMax Weber (1920/1946) discussedmodern sci- encein materialistterms in his essay,"Science as a Vocation."This essay focuses on the shiftsin earlytwentieth century German academic life causedby the cen- tralizationand monopolizationof laboratoryequipment. The promiseof this typeof materialistsociology of sciencehas not yet beenfully realized. It suggests lookingat the actualmachinery of intellectualproduction-parchment, printing presses,microscopes, cyclotrons, biochemical laboratories, and so on-and at the organizationalforms and property relations associated with it. The explana- toryobjective is to (1) showthat certain material and organizational conditions can be expectedto producecertain ideas (or typesof ideas) and (2) revealthe historicalpatterns of changein themeans of intellectualproduction. This aspectof Marxismhas not beenas influentialin the sociologyof science as the idea thatforms of knowledgeare direct reflections of economicorganiza- tions or the interestsand outlooks of particularsocial classes. Recent Marxist- orientedsociology of science has continuedto stress this approach.Sohn-Rethel (1978), for example,attributes the rise of ancientGreek mathematics to the de- The Sociologyof Science 187 velopmentof a monetaryeconomy in Ioniansociety. Habermas(1971) similarly interpretsmodern science and technology as part of the ideological sphere of class domination.Such argumentshave a tendencyto adulteratematerialism with idealism. That is, the ideas associatedwith certain economic activitiesor class interests come to be viewed as the major influenceson or causes of scientific ideas. One reason for the popularityof this form of argumentmay be that it is relativelysimple and cheap. It can be made independentof empiricalverification and comparativehistorical evidence. One can simplyfit an interpretationonto an historicalepoch because it "makessense" intellectually to do so. Max Scheler (1925) and Karl Mannheim(1929/1936) were amongthe first scholarsin the post-WorldWar I period to take up the idea that knowledgere- flects social structure.Neither was a Marxist,but both were influencedby an intellectualatmosphere in whichMarxism had recentlyand rapidlyachieved con- siderableprominence. Mannheim in particularaddressed the relativisticimplica- tions of the Marxist argumentelegantly articulatedby Lukacs (1923/1971): the Mannheimianproblem involved associatingdegrees of false consciousness with differentsocial

Many of the issues explored by scholars today E mirror the original concerns of the discipline: sociology emerged in the first place as a science geared toward providing an institutionally informed and culturally rich understanding of eco- nomic life. Confronted with the profound social transformations of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the founders of so- ciological thought—Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel—explored the relationship between the economy and the larger society (Swedberg and Granovetter 1992). They examined the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services through the lenses of domination and power, solidarity and inequal- ity, structure and agency, and ideology and culture. The classics thus planted the seeds for the systematic study of social classes, gender, race, complex organizations, work and occupations, economic devel- opment, and culture as part of a unified sociological approach to eco- nomic life. Subsequent theoretical developments led scholars away from this originally unified approach. In the 1930s, Talcott Parsons rein- terpreted the classical heritage of economic sociology, clearly distin- guishing between economics (focused on the means of economic ac- tion, or what he called “the adaptive subsystem”) and sociology (focused on the value orientations underpinning economic action). It will consider topics such as: How does culture contribute to inequality? Where does cultural change come from? How do groups gain recognition? How is the public sphere structured? It will also consider cultural processes and sociological explanations by focusing on new developments in microsociology, the sociology of morality, and evaluation. Throughout the semester we will pay special attention to how the authors we read mobilize and connect theory and data. We will also be reflexive concerning how we can use their work to feed our own thinking about the topics at hand. Thus, the seminar will also be a context for explicit apprenticeship about the process of research and knowledge production in sociology. Three of the authors we cover will be presenting in the Culture and Social Analysis and the Economic Sociology workshop during the spring semester (Bill Sewell, Randall Collins, and Chris Bail). Attending their presentation will be a useful complement to the course, and a requirement. (I am exploring arranging separate sessions with them for our course.)     Randall Collins: Conflict & Geopolitical Theory Conflict theory has a long history in sociology. Without question, Karl Marx’s work in the early to mid-1800s formed the initial statements of this perspective. As you know, Marx was centrally concerned with class and the dialectics of capitalism. He argued that capitalism would produce its own gravediggers by creating the conditions under which class consciousness and a failing economy would come into existence. In this juncture between structure and class-based group experience, the working class revolution would take place. In the early 20th century, Max Weber formulated a response to Marx’s theory. Weber saw that conflict didn’t overwhelmingly involve the economy, but that the state and economy together set up conditions for conflict. Of central importance to Weber’s scheme is the notion of legitimation. All systems of oppression must be legitimated in order to function. Thus, one of the critical issues in the question of conflict is legitimation. Weber also saw that class is more complex than Marx initially supposed, and that there are other factors that contribute to social inequality, most notably status and party (or power). Since that time a number of efforts have been made to combine different elements from one or both of these theorists to understand conflict. One of the most notable efforts in this vein is that of Randall Collins. In 1975 Collins published Conflict Sociology. His goal in the book was to draw together all that sociology had learned about conflict and to scientifically state the theories in formal propositions and hypotheses.

Mondays Introductory Comments This course has two complementary goals: 1. Students will learn how to construct theoretical arguments about empirical material. 2. Students will learn the basic concepts and approaches of canonical social theorists. Throughout the semester, we will attempt to bring these two goals together. That is, we will draw on canonical approaches in the process of constructing our own arguments about society. This means we understand what major theorists say, critique what they say, and then – potentially – modify their arguments to construct our own explanations of social phenomenon. The premise of this course is that we will construct better explanations after we have seriously studied the classical sociological theory. Notice that serious canonical study is not our end goal; it is only the first step. It is not enough to interpret the classical theories; the point is to change them. The class discussions, lectures, and paper assignments all aim at this goal: using the classical theorists to come to our own understanding of society. The fact that we are authorized to disagree with or modify canonical concepts does not mean we should do so lightly. We have to do serious study first, and we need to take that word 'serious' seriously. We do not discard a social theory until and unless we have an alternative theory of comparable scope with which to replace it.
