We secured our homes, bought supplies, and braced for a potential impact of Dorian - and with a late wind directional change, we were spared just like that. Thank you all for coming together as usual as we prepared for the storm. Neighbors helping neighbors and looking out for one another is what makes Islesworth special. Secondly, we had to deal with an unrelated internet outage that became apparent throughout the community, especially over the last couple of weeks. The issue was finally located by Comcast technicians and the outage was determined to be a bad node within our community playground area. All homes that were linked to that node were affected with slow or no internet. The good news is the problem was resolved and upgrades were later performed that increased everyone's internet speed. In our continuing annual effort to ensure the safety of our children during the upcoming Halloween evening trick-or-treating activities, the Islesworth Board of Directors will utilize Deputies from the Martin County Sheriff's Office to close our community entrances to non-resident vehicles. The entrance closures will be effective Halloween night from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm. The rear entrance to the community on Berry will be closed off completely to vehicular traffic during the event. Residents will only be allowed to enter at the front entrance of the community during the closure hours. Please use caution if entering during the event as there will be many children traversing Islesworth's roadways. If you are having non-resident visitors, please advise them to arrive prior to 6:00 pm or they will be denied entry to the community. Thank you and have a fun-filled and safe Halloween. Residents, please make it a practice to use our website at www.islesworth.org as your Go To with any community HOA related questions or needs you may have. The Board would like everyone to receive correct information when it comes to our HOA. Joseph R. She succeeds Carolyn Davi, who retired in August after 31 years on the job. Executive Director Campbell kindly agreed to an interview with the Islesworth Eye by email on Aug. 26, 2019. Here is that interview: Q: What type of business growth do you see for Palm City? Campbell: “Palm City’s businesses are divided into two portions. The first is professional (doctors, dentists, insurance, etc.) and retail. The second is the industrial side, which has added a great deal of leasing square footage in the Sands Commerce Center. This will lead to large businesses such as distributors, suppliers and manufacturing.” Q: Are there any new retail or restaurants coming to Palm City soon? Campbell: “There are one or two remaining parcels in front of the Palm City Chamber office. There is a developmental sign on Mapp Road for Tucker Commons that is said to have a restaurant on the first floor. Dunkin Donuts is going to be at the corner of Martin Downs and 714. There is a storage facility being built next to GCY on 714. This new facility is 3 stories in height. The Martin County School Board is constructing a new Palm City Elementary School on the same site.” Q: What type of businesses do you see being developed on the Martin Highway 714 stretch between Berry Avenue and the Huizenga Center? Campbell: “There is nothing at this time. The property appears to be for sale due to the zoning of limited commercial. There are no official plans at this time.” Q: Any insights into how the property at the southwest corner of High Meadows and Martin Highway 714 might be developed? Campbell: “It was purchased at auction by an out-of-town company and they have just begun the pre- application stages with the county.” Q: What types of job growth do you see for Palm City? Campbell: “There will be small incremental job growth in Palm City. Palm City is more of a residential community. There is steady growth in the county.” -3- Safe and Fun Halloween to All! -4- ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?? Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients: • 2 (10 ounce) cans chunk chicken, drained • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened • 1 cup ranch dressing • ¾ cup pepper sauce (such as Frank's Red Hot) • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese • 1 bunch celery, cleaned and cut into 4 inch pieces • 1 (8 ounce) box (chicken-flavored) crackers Directions: Heat chicken and hot sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through. Stir in cream cheese and ranch dressing. Cook, stirring until well blended and warm. Mix in half of the shredded cheese and transfer the mixture to a 8x11 baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top; bake at 350° for about 20-25 minutes until hot & bubbly. Serve with celery sticks and crackers. Source: Allrecipes.com **************************************************************************** Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treat Pumpkins are perfect for any fall gathering or cute Halloween treat. Ready in only 20 minutes, everyone will love them! Ingredients • 6 cups Rice Krispies • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 10 ounces mini marshmallows • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter • 12 drops red food coloring, may vary depending on type • 4 drops yellow food coloring, may vary depending on type • 12 Tootsie Roll Midgees • Desired frosting colors for decorating Instructions 1. In a medium sauce pan, melt butter and peanut butter over medium heat for 3 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon. Add marshmallows and food coloring. Continue to stir until marshmallows are melted and sticky like glue. A wooden spoon is important here because the mixture will stick less to this surface. 2. Remove from heat and stir in Rice Krispies cereal. Blend well. 3. Although I highly recommend wearing powder-free latex gloves, you can also use wax paper to mold the warm mixture into round balls. 4. Push a Tootsie Roll Midgee into the top for the stem. The heat from the pumpkin will create a malleable material so the Tootsie Roll can be gently bent. Ridges in the Tootsie Roll create a natural and woody effect. 5. Allow pumpkins to cool completely, then decorate with frosting. FIRST EDITION DECEMBER 1944 Boston Printing Company boston, massachusetts PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN MEMORY OF MY GRANDFATHER CAPTAIN JOSHUA NICKERSON ROWE WHO FOUGHT PIRATES WHILE ON THE CLIPPER SHIP CRYSTAL PALACE PREFACE Reader—here is a volume devoted exclusively to the buccaneers and pirates who infested the shores, bays, and islands of the Atlantic Coast of North America. This is no collection of Old Wives' Tales, half-myth, half-truth, handed down from year to year with the story more distorted with each telling, nor is it a work of fiction. This book is an accurate account of the most outstanding pirates who ever visited the shores of the Atlantic Coast. These are stories of stark realism. None of the arti- ficial school of sheltered existence is included. Except for the extreme profanity, blasphemy, and obscenity in which most pirates were adept, everything has been included which is essential for the reader to get a true and fair picture of the life of a sea-rover.

Among Ships of Thieves on Waves of Change Mike Thomin Over the past few decades maritime historians have focused on pirates operating in the Caribbean Sea during the early eighteenth century. Historians such as Marcus Rediker, David Cordingly, Peter Leeson, and Angus Konstram examined pirates during this “Golden Age of Piracy.”1 They popularized the idea that the shipboard life of these maritime predators was quite egalitarian and democratic, especially when contrasted with contemporary Western social and cultural structures in ports as well as on board naval and merchant ships. This era of piracy has captivated popular culture throughout the last century and a half through the ever expanding matrix of literature and film. However, another period of major pirate activity in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea that reverberated across the Atlantic world during the first decades of the early nineteenth century has largely been neglected both by maritime historians and the public. To date some scholars have explored the economic, political, military, legal, and systematic aspects of Atlantic world privateering, piracy, and the Anglo-American naval response to it during the early nineteenth century.2 Nevertheless, much work still remains to be done to more fully understand this complex period of nautical crime and the sailors who contributed to it.3 A better understanding of these maritime criminals might be found in examining the sociocultural structures on board pirate vessels in the early nineteenth century from the perspective of these pirates. The definition of the term “structures” varies, but it is nonetheless one of the most fundamental concepts in the social sciences.4 William Sewell’s use of the term structures incorporates both cultural and social aspects keeping it from being too rigid and constant.

CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS CHARLESTOWN, MASS. “I know histhry isn’t thrue, Hinnissy, because it ain’t like what I see ivry day in Halsted Street. If any wan comes along with a histhry iv Greece or Rome that’ll show me th’ people fightin’, gettin’ dhrunk, makin’ love, gettin’ married, owin’ th’ grocery man an’ bein’ without hard coal, I’ll believe they was a Greece or Rome, but not befur.” — Dunne, Finley Peter, OBSERVATIONS BY MR. The Reverend Francis Higginson was leading a group of 300 settlers (including many of his own congregation) aboard a fleet of five ships.
