Overnight in Reykjavik. page 1/6 DAY 2: Tues or ThursFly to Greenland , City Tour, Evening Iceberg cruise Fly to Greenland. On arrival at Ilulissat a guide will pick you up at airport and transfer you to the Arctic hotel to start your West Greenland Tour. You will start your visit to Greenland with a guided Ilulissat City Walk to visit the old part of town and learn more about the city from its historic roots and how that influenced life in the city today. You will see the original Danish trading station, the bustling fishing harbour, the fishing market where you may see the hunters selling their catch and maybe even see some whale blubber, the old church and the museum. After your welcoming dinner you will take a beautiful and thrilling cruise to see the Icebergs. During the Evening Iceberg Cruise the sunsets warm red colours and the gigantic icebergs reflecting in the icy waters are an unforgettable sight. Cruise between the icebergs and enjoy a late Martini on “the real rocks”! Until about the 24th July this cruise will run as a midnight sun cruise with all the beauty and eeriness of the Polar Sun. Overnight in Ilulissat. To read about our experience of flying over the Icebergs to Greenland DAY 3: Wed or Fri Boat Cruise to the Calving Glacier and Rodebay Settlement The Eqip glacier is the only glacier in the area where you often experience a glacier calving. You will cruise in front of the 5 km wide glacier for about an hour and hopefully see this unique calving sight creating new icebergs. However the boat trip there is also beautiful as you pass by Oqaatsut, a settlement of about 50 inhabitants before going through the beautiful Ataa Strait with cliffs to the west and bird colonies to the east where you will likely see colonies of fulmars and Arctic skuas. Afterwards you will continue to the tiny settlement of Rodebay for lunch. There will be time for a short wander around to get a feel for the isolation that the Innuits are living in before returning to Ilulissat. Dinner and Overnight in Ilulissat. In our opinion this is the highlight of your West Greenland holiday. Dinner and Overnight in Ilulissat. DAY 4: Thurs or Sat Sermermiut Icebergs, Visit Inuit Home, Feed Huskies. You will go as far as the road goes, and then take a beautiful walk along to the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fiord to Sermermiut where traces from the 3 old Eskimo cultures still can be seen, as well of course as the fantastic icebergs. Afterwards you will meet some Inuit people in their home, and whilst enjoying a “Coffee-Mik“, learn about Greenland and its people and their way of life. The 3,500 husky dogs in town are still used for both work and fun every winter. We invite you to join the feeding of a dog team, where you can see, feel, touch and hear the howling of 20 hungry dogs. The owner will demonstrate the sledge and the harness and tell you about life as a sled dog. Goodbye dinner and overnight in Ilulissat. page 2/6 A la Carte Optional Extras Kayaking to See the Icebergs Paddle in a kayak and witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord. The tour will adapt to people’s capabilities but you need to be between 1.5m and 2m in height, fit in the kayak and be able to paddle , with no serious back or shoulder problems. Dry Suits are provided and including transfers this should last about 3 hours. Price Per Person: From £195 Whale Watching in Disko Bay We cruise by boat into the Disko Bay to spot whales. In the summer time humpback whales come to the Disko Bay to feed on capelin, a small herring-like fish. As the humpback whales are a protected species, they are very trusting and can often be enjoyed at close range. Please be aware that we are not visiting a zoo, and therefore we cannot guarantee that the whales will ‘visit’ our boat! This lasts 6 hrs as you will also stop at Ilimanaq to see the small settlement. Pack lunch is included. The whole trip is @ 5-6 hrs. Price Per Person: From £225 Greenland Scenic Flight of Fantasy by Helicopter From Ilulissat A you will fly along the coastline passing the small hunters settlement of Rodebay with its 45 inhabitants and continue to the narrow canal of Pakitsoq B. You will follow the southern shore to the inner part of the fjord system c from where we will approach the inland Ice Cap D. You will pass over the Northern Glacier and into the Ilulissat Ice Fjord to the ice filled Kangia ice fjord E following it out to Disko Bay. Your flight ends over Disko Bay where you will circle over huge stranded icebergs before returning to Ilulissat. This flight will be in a 5 or 8 seater helicopter with roughly 45 mins flying time. Price per person: From £525 per person page 3/6 DAY 5: Fri or Sun Fly to Iceland after your West Greenland Tour. Transfer to airport for your midday flight to Iceland. On arrival in Reykjavik make your own way by taxi to your hotel for a night at leisure in Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavik. DAY 6: Sat or Mon Relax at Blue Lagoon, transfer to airport for flight home after your Iceland and Greenland short break. After Breakfast check out prior to your flybus transfer to Iceland’s most famous attraction – the Blue Lagoon. Enjoy bathing and relaxing in the sensual geothermal seawater, known for its positive effects on the skin. In addition to bathing there is a sauna with a view of the lagoon, a steam bath with white walls that resemble silica mud and a cosy steam bath carved into a lava cave. The milky waters and silica are famous for their health benefits. Finally you will be dropped off at the airport for your flight home after your special weekend break. NOTE: This break is limited by flight availability so an early booking is essential. For those with a bit more time we highly recommend combining this trip with some time exploring dramatic Iceland under the midnight sun. Where You'll Stay Hotel Arctic page 4/6 Alternatively the unique two-person igloo cabins made of aluminium provide a front row view of the Ice Fjord. The igloos are located just a short walk from the hotel but in many ways they are in a totally different universe. The harsh nature comes right up to the door, and yet inside the igloos are modern and comfortable with electric heating, radio, TV, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities and a small bathroom with a shower. Please note the igloos are only available in the summer. Hotel Reykjavik Centrum During its construction, the remains of a Viking longhouse from the Settlement Period were found - now on display. Among the finds excavated at the site were Iceland’s oldest human remains, dating from approximately 870 AD. The hotel has 89 rooms, each fitted with modern amenities and all rooms have an ensuite bathroom. For our experience whilst staying at Hotel Reykjavik Centrum Testimonials What an extraordinary place – indescribably beautiful. To actually watch and hear the Equip Glacier calve and take numerous boat trips past the Icebergs was so very special. Talk about a Once in a Lifetime Experience and certainly one off my bucket list! Thankyou for organising the most incredible trip – Icebergs, Glaciers, Huskies and we saw whales on three separate times, and took the classic photo of a whale fluking with an Iceberg behind ! It doesn’t get better than that ! Although the photographs are artfully crafted and technically superior, there is the question of what an accretion of so many sublime landscape images of the North accomplishes in terms of perceptions of place, community and culture? It is true that creating awe-inspiring photographs that promote an appreciation for polar-regions is legitimate work.

    Ilulissat Icefjord

World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 1149.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Ilulissat Icefjord DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 7th July 2004 STATE PARTY: DENMARK CRITERIA: N (i) (iii) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (i): The Ilulissat Icefjord is an outstanding example of a stage in the Earth’s history: the last ice age of the Quaternary Period. The ice-stream is one of the fastest (19m per day) and most active in the world. Its annual calving of over 35 cu. km of ice accounts for 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier has been the object of scientific attention for 250 years and, along with its relative ease of accessibility, has significantly added to the understanding of ice-cap glaciology, climate change and related geomorphic processes. Criterion (iii): The combination of a huge ice sheet and a fast moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs is a phenomenon only seen in Greenland and Antarctica. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for close view of the calving glacier front as it cascades down from the ice sheet and into the ice-choked fjord. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250-km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240-ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea.

Cod Fish, Walrus, and Chieftains: Economic Intensification in the Norse N Atlantic Sophia Perdikaris Dept of Archaeology & Anthropology Brooklyn College CUNY Thomas H. McGovern Dept of Anthropology Hunter College CUNY Both: CUNY Northern Science and Education Center Paper submitted to T. Thurston et al (eds ) New Perspectives on Intensification , Plenum Press March 2003 ABSTRACT: During the Viking Age (ca AD 800-1100) Scandinavian colonists settled the islands of the western North Atlantic, introducing agriculture and chiefly society to Iceland and Greenland. Zooarchaeological evidence indicates that these two westernmost colonies shared many common characteristics, but diverged economically soon after initial settlement. The Icelanders drew upon an Iron Age heritage to intensify a staple goods economy based increasingly upon preserved cod-family fish that ultimately linked them closely to the expanding proto-capitalist economies of later medieval Europe. Greenlanders instead intensified the hunting of walrus to produce the prestige goods component of the Viking Age chiefly economy. As social and environmental change intensified in the later Middle Ages, Greenland’s economy failed and the colony became extinct while Icelanders survived. New zooarchaeological approaches to the study of pre-state chiefly economics are transforming our understanding of the history of this key region. KEYWORDS : VIKINGS, North Atlantic, ECONOMY, FISHING, SEA MAMMALS, INTENSIFICATION Acknowledgements: We would like to thank the many scholars who have so kindly provided practical assistance, data, and good advice in both the field and laboratory on both sides of the Atlantic. We are particularly indebted to the colleagues of the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) research cooperative, whose enthusiastic collaboration has been vital to the research reported here.
