CONSUMER ALERT REGARDING TICKET PURCHASING

With so many high-profile and popular events coming to Wharton Center, we have found more and more patrons are being exploited by unscrupulous ticket resellers. Often our tickets are being marketed on secondary ticket websites before the operator of the website has even purchased tickets – and they are selling at prices far above the price you will pay through whartoncenter.com.

Purchasing tickets to Wharton Center events through another source might result in paying too much for your tickets or paying for tickets that are invalid. If there is a problem with your tickets, you may not be able to receive help from Wharton Center’s Ticket Office as there will be no in-house record of your transaction. In addition, we are unable to contact you if there is a change in performance time, traffic notices, etc.

To avoid being ensnared by unscrupulous ticket resellers: • Bookmark our website, whartoncenter.com for ticket and show information. • Sign up for our eClub to receive information directly from Wharton Center.

We urge you to protect yourself by purchasing directly from the official source for Wharton Center tickets: at whartoncenter.com; by phone at 1-800-WHARTON (1-800-942-7866); or at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office at Wharton Center.

29 ABOUT PILOBOLUS

For 47 years, Pilobolus has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies. We continue to bring this tradition to global audiences through our post-disciplinary collaborations with some of the greatest influencers, thinkers, and creators in the world. Now, in our digitally driven and increasingly mediated landscape, we also reach beyond performance to teach people how to connect through designed live experiences. We bring our decades of expertise telling stories with the human form to show diverse communities, brands, and organizations how to maximize group creativity, solve problems, create surprise, and generate joy through the power of nonverbal communication.

Pilobolus has created and toured over 120 pieces of repertory to more than 65 countries. We currently perform our work for over 300,000 people across the U.S. and around the world each year. In the last year, Pilobolus was featured on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, NBC’s TODAY Show, MTV’s Video Music Awards, The Harry Connick Show, ABC’s The Chew, and the CW Network’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Pilobolus has been recognized with many prestigious honors, including a TED Fellowship, a 2012 Grammy® Award nomination, a Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Programming, and several Cannes Lion Awards at the International Festival of Creativity. In 2015, Pilobolus was named one of Dance Heritage Coalition’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures. Pilobolus has collaborated with more than 25 brands and organizations in finance, retail, media, fashion, sports, and more to create bespoke performances for television, film, and live events.

Good hunting all that keep the Jungle Law! I first discovered Rudyard Kipling at around age eight through his ustJ So Stories: how the elephant got his trunk, and so on. His writing brilliantly combined archetypal myths with authentic human emotions and real animal traits. It was exciting to read, and it fired my imagination. Of course, Rick and I are not the only ones to have been entranced by his beloved writing. But I hope to bring a new vision of The Jungle Book to a new generation who may have both a more advanced view of nature than Kipling's generation, and less direct contact with it. We included Kipling's version of how the tiger got its stripes in this adaptation: the play is a labour of love combining poems and stories from The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, along with our own characters, poetry, and take on humanity's troubled relationship with "the wild." Mowgli begins the play disconnected from humanity and nature; torn between the animal and human worlds. This tug-of-war within Mowgli, between his two families and his search for belonging, are feelings to which every child can relate. This production continues the vision we began withTwenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea of bringing traditional art and new technologies together, as well as bringing us together with our own audiences in a darkened theatre. It's about . We want to connect with you, to experience a unique story in a fresh way, to emerge from our "hour of pride and power" with your own imagination fired, and a little bit of jungle in your spirit. 44 IMANI WINDS

Celebrating 20 years of music making, the Grammy-nominated Imani Winds has led both a revolution and the evolution of the wind quintet through their dynamic playing, adventurous programming, imaginative collaborations and outreach endeavors that have inspired audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

The ensemble’s playlist embraces traditional chamber music repertoire, and as a 21st century group, Imani Winds is devoutly committed to expanding the wind quintet repertoire by commissioning music from new voices that reflect historical events and the times in which we currently live. Present and future season performances include a Jessie Montgomery composition inspired by her great-grandfather’s migration from the American south to the north; and socially conscious music by Andy Akiho designed to be performed both on the concert stage and in front of immigrant detention centers throughout the country.

Imani Winds regularly performs in prominent international concert venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Hall and the Kimmel Center. Their touring schedule has taken them throughout the Asian continent, Brazil, Australia, England, New Zealand and across Europe. Their national and international presence includes performances at chamber music series in Boston, New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Philadelphia and Houston. Festival performances include Chamber Music Northwest, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Ravinia Festival, Chautauqua, Banff Centre and Music from Angel Fire.

Imani Winds’ travels through the jazz world are highlighted by their association with saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, woodwind artist and composer Paquito D’Rivera and pianist and composer Jason Moran. Their ambitious project, “Josephine Baker: A Life of Le Jazz Hot!” featured chanteuse René Marie in performances that brought the house down in New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Los Angeles and St. Louis.

Imani Winds’ commitment to education runs deep. The group participates in residencies throughout the U.S., giving performances and master classes to thousands of students each year. Academic and institutional residencies include the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Duke University, University of Chicago, Curtis Institute of Music, Da Camera of Houston and numerous others across the country. The ensemble will also be in residence with MSU’s College of Music the week of the performance.

The ensemble launched its annual Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival in 2010, bringing together young instrumentalists and composers from across North America and abroad for exploration and performance of the standard repertoire and newly composed chamber music. Festival participants also take part in workshops devoted to entrepreneurial and outreach opportunities, with the goal of creating the complete musician and global citizen.

In 2016, Imani Winds received their greatest accolade in their 20 years of music making: a permanent presence in the classical music section of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.

45 PROGRAM NOTES

Jeff Scott Startin’ Sumthin’ (note by Jeff Scott)

Startin' Sumthin' is a modern take on the genre of ragtime music. With an emphasis on ragged! The defining characteristic of ragtime music is a specific type of syncopation in which melodic accents occur between metrical beats. This results in a melody that seems to be avoiding some metrical beats of the accompaniment by emphasizing notes that either anticipate or follow the beat. The ultimate (and intended) effect on the listener is actually to accentuate the beat, thereby inducing the listener to move to the music. Scott Joplin, the composer/pianist known as the "King of Ragtime," called the effect "weird and intoxicating."

John Harbison Quintet for Winds (note by Eric Bromberger)

John Harbison studied with Walter Piston at Harvard, with Boris Blacher in Berlin, and with Roger Sessions and Earl Kim at Princeton; in 1969 he joined the faculty at MIT. His compositions include two operas (one on Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale), orchestral works, concertos for piano and for violin and for brass quintet, chamber music, and vocal settings on an impressive range of texts. Harbison has also made a career as a conductor; he has been conductor of the Boston Cantata Singers and has guest-conducted the San Francisco and Boston Symphony orchestras. He has been composer-in-residence at Reed College, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Harbison composed his Quintet for Winds in the summer of 1978. Himself a pianist and string player, Harbison has written on several occasions of his pleasure in composing for winds and in working with wind players, and the Quintet for Winds may be seen as a celebration of that pleasure. In a prefatory note in the score, Harbison suggests a key to this music when he says that it “emphasizes mixtures and doublings.” Individual parts are notated and phrased with unusual precision, and the quintet offers varied textures and contrasts between different combinations of instruments; there are frequently several layers of sound and several musical events happening simultaneously.

The opening of the Intrada demonstrates this: horn and bassoon in unison have the quiet opening idea, above them oboe and clarinet play quiet sustained notes, and superimposed on top of them is the flute’s trill on those same notes. Within seconds, however, all five instruments share a ortissimof unison, and such contrasts of dynamics and texture will mark the entire movement. TheIntermezzo (marked lusingando “intimate”) shifts meters constantly over its first half, with the slightly unbalanced 5/8 seeming to predominate before the movement settles comfortably into 3/4. The Romanza, also full of shifting tempos, gives way to a Scherzo in ABA form; here blistering runs by solo instruments are set off by sharp staccato attacks from the other instruments. A faint air of parody hangs over the high-spirited Finale. After a slow introduction, the movement erupts with jaunty themes, syncopated rhythms, and unusual markings: ruvido (“coarse”), amoroso (“loving”), and troppo dolce (esagerato). At the end, the music begins to press ahead and rushes to an energetic close.

46 Lalo Schifrin La Nouvelle Orleans

The son of a professional violinist, Lalo Schifrin studied piano as a boy and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires. He then went to Paris, where he studied with Charles Koechlin, attended Messiaen’s lectures, and played jazz piano in clubs at night. From Paris he moved to New York, where he performed with Dizzie Gillespie for several years before moving to Hollywood in 1963. During his long career Schifrin has composed in a number of genres, though he may be most familiar to general audiences for his television and film scores: he wrote the music for the showsThe Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mannix and Mission: Impossible, as well as the scores for the films Cool Hand Luke and Bullitt.

Schifrin wrote La Nouvelle Orleans, for woodwind quintet, in 1987. The music evokes its title specifically by way of a traditional New Orleans funeral followed by music one would hear in a “2nd line.” The piece is quite clearly a reflection of Schifrin’s background as a jazz musician, yet contemporary composer. The uneven rhythmic gait of the beginning leads to long solos for all the instruments. The music gathers more energy, and the final section turns into a jazzy romp. Beginning slowly, this gradually accelerates into music with real verve, making the big band conclusion all the more effective.

György Ligeti Sechs Bagatellen (note by Eric Bromberger)

György Ligeti received his training in Budapest, but left Hungary in 1956 as the revolution was being crushed. As a composer in a strict communist regime, particularly during the repressive Stalin years, Ligeti had been bound by artistic restraints that limited the development of his work. With his flight to the West, Ligeti began to forge the individual style that has made him one of the leading composers of the avant-garde and an artist who has had a profound influence on music over the last three decades. His music sometimes obliterates traditional concepts of harmony and rhythm, and he has written for unusual groups of instruments, including his Poème symphonique for 100 metronomes, each set at a different speed. American audiences are probably most familiar with the Kyrie from his Requiem (written 1963-65), for this complex five-part fugue for choir was used as part of the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s film,2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Sechs Bagatellen for woodwind quintet date from 1953, while Ligeti was still in Budapest. These brief pieces are arrangements of movements from Ligeti’sMusica Ricercata, a collection of eleven piano pieces, written over the previous two years. Bagatelle is the French word for trifle; in music, it refers to a short instrumental piece; Beethoven’s Für Elise is one of his bagatelles for piano. Ligeti’s Sechs Bagatellen last a total of just over ten minutes. The pieces themselves require little comment; the harmonic language remains tonal, and the writing for winds is deft and idiomatic. Particularly noteworthy is the fifth, titledBéla Bartók: In Memoriam. This brief piece, written in the manner of Bartók’s “night-music,” is Ligeti’s homage to his countryman and fellow composer.

47 Reena Esmail The Light is the Same (note by Reena Esmail)

Religions are many But God is one The lamps may be different But the Light is the same

Like many people, I’ve spent the last few months trying to make sense of what is happening in our country and in our world. In my search for texts for a vocal piece I have been writing concurrently, I came across these wise words from the 13th century Sufi mystic poet, Rumi. He states so beautifully that, even if our methods for searching for meaning and happiness look very different, the things we seek are so similar.

This piece uses two Hindustani raags: Vachaspati and Yaman. Thebhav, the aesthetic of these raags are so different: Vachaspati is dark, brooding, complex and dense; Yaman is light and innocent. And yet, practically speaking, only one note is different between them. The melodies they generate and the way they move makes them feel worlds apart, and yet their notes are almost exactly the same. The piece begins in Vachaspati, in desolate, spare melodic lines. Slowly, as Yaman peeks through the dense harmonies, the two raags begin to weave together into a seamless composite.

Valerie Coleman Tzigane (note by Valerie Coleman)

Tzigane (not to be confused with Ravel’s famous violin work of the same name) is a new work for wind quintet by Valerie Coleman, that celebrates the virtuosity of each member within the ensemble. Written in the fall of 2011, Coleman was inspired by two occurrences: Imani Winds’ collaboration with Palestinian oud player Simon Shaheen, and her recent completion of ROMA, a work for wind ensemble celebrating the culture of the Romani people (commonly referred to as ‘gypsies’). The work itself represents the third installment within a series inspired by the combination of Romani and Middle Eastern styles, the first two being a nonet for wind quintet and strings, and the previously mentioned wind ensemble.

Throughout the work, the bassoonist is scored to play a ‘low A,’ which is typically not within the range of the bassoon but is made possible with the insertion of a tube into the bell of the instrument, thereby extending the range. The work, however, is not about the unusual techniques, but rather stylized playing as Tzigane brings the same intensity and virtuosity found in gypsy violin to winds. This means that a certain level of freedom and passion is required to bring each solo alive, while a constant undercurrent of rhythm would provide a source of drive. The result is a colorful, highly charged journey within one substantial movement.

Tonight's program will run approximately 85 minutes and will have a 15-minute intermission.

66 The actors and stage managers in this production are members of Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. THE CAST

DOMINIC CONTI joined the RSC in 2004, helped create Completely Hollywood (abridged), and has toured it and four other RSC shows all over the U.S. and around the world. He’s worked at such prestigious U.S. regional theaters as Plasticene, Steppenwolf, Westport Country Playhouse, Williamstown, Beaver Creek Theatre Festival, Madison Rep, the Goodman in Chicago, Chicago Shakespeare, and First Folio Shakespeare Festival. Film/TV credits include Fiona's Fortune, The Roaring Twenties, and the web series The Best Friend.

DOUG HARVEY has magically reduced his age in order to play several younger roles on stage, including some personal favorites: Flat Stanley in The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Colin in The Secret Garden, and Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth (Mainstreet Theatre Company.) He is thrilled to be a part of the Reduced Shakespeare Company family. Other theater credits include South Coast Rep, A Noise Within, and the LA Philharmonic. He studied Shakespeare at the Stella Adler Studio through NYU Tisch, and at RADA in London. He also narrates the live planetarium shows at L.A.’s landmark Griffith Observatory.

TIGER REEL resides within a heavily fortified compound in Los Angeles awaiting the zombie apocalypse. He leaves his fortress occasionally to perform with the RSC or direct such artistically alienating productions as Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, an original adaptation of Karel Capek’s futuristic robo-attack play R.U.R., and the international tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other Tiger sightings have been documented in late-90s television commercials and Comic-Con surveillance footage. He is glad to have been plucked from obscurity by the RSC. PRODUCTION STAFF

ADAM LONG (Co-Author, Founding Member) began his professional life as an accountant for an anti-nuclear political action committee by day and bassist for an acoustic punk band by night. Then he put on a skirt and wig and became a founding member of the Reduced Shakespeare Company. Adam toured with the RSC, spent five years following The Grateful Dead, performed stand-up comedy in Canada, became a Buddhist, and finally settled in England where he lives in London with wife Alex, son Joe, daughter Tilly, friend John, four guinea pigs, a fish, two tortoises, a cat, and a small grey rabbit called Willard.

REED MARTIN (Co-Director; Additional Material) co-created and performed in the original productions of The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged), Western Civilization: The Complete Musical (abridged), All The Great Books (abridged), Completely Hollywood (abridged), The Complete World of Sports (abridged), The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged), The Complete History of Comedy (abridged), and William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged). He has performed in London’s West End, at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Seattle Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theater, ACT San Francisco, McCarter Theatre, Old Globe Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, the White House and Madison Square Garden, as well as in 11 foreign countries. He toured for 67 two years as a clown/assistant ringmaster with Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus. Reed has written for the BBC, National Public Radio, TBS, Britain’s Channel Four, RTE Ireland, Public Radio International, Sky TV UK, the Washington Post, and Vogue magazine. Reed's work has been nominated for an Olivier Award in London, a Helen Hayes Award in Washington, DC, and a San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critic's Circle Award. He lives in Northern California with his wife and two sons, all three of whom are much funnier than he is.

MIKE PETERS (Stage Manager) Mike currently resides in the metro Detroit area and splits time between productions ranging from opera to dance to circus to corporate events. Recent credits include The Pearl Fishers, Hockey - The Musical! - The Tour!, La bohème, The Passenger, Verdi’s , William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged), The Tempest, and the pithily and increasingly inaccurately named North American Car and Truck of the Year for the North American International Auto Show. He would also like to thank his wonderful wife Amanda for being wonderful, and for being the music in his life. And also being wonderful.

DANIEL SINGER (Co-Author, RSC Founder) has been a theatrical impresario from the moment he looked up ‘impresario’ in the dictionary. Upon his return from studying “proper dramatic technique” in London, he became a director at the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, where he founded the subversive Reduced Shakespeare Company. In 1989 Daniel hung up his doublet-and-hose to design theme park attractions at Walt Disney Imagineering, and became a freelance designer, writer and event producer in Los Angeles. His new hit comedy A Perfect Likeness chronicles Lewis Carroll’s (fictitious) attempt to get his literary hero Charles Dickens to pose for a photograph in 1866 Oxford. Coming soon to a theater near you!

JENNI SCHWANER LADD (Wardrobe) has been wandering around and about with the RSC for nearly 18 years. She has a long and colorful history of slinging costumes and props at performers, having toured with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Madison Opera, and Hubbard Chicago. Jenni’s primary superpower is being able to say “Please wash the costumes in cold water only” in seven different languages.

AUSTIN TICHENOR (Co-Director) is a fifth-generation San Franciscan born on the 54th anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake, which makes him older than he looks but short for his weight. He co-created ten RSC stage shows, Pop-Up Shakespeare (illustrated by Jennie Maizels), and blogs monthly for the Folger Shakespeare Library. Numerous TV jobs include guest starring roles on 24, Felicity, Gilmore Girls, The X-Files, West Wing (and shows like them) and he recently directed Twelfth Night for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Find him on Twitter @austintichenor.

JESS WINFIELD (Co-Author, Founding Member) performed with the RSC from its ’81 founding until ‘92, when he realized he'd played Hamlet more times than Gielgud and Olivier combined and suddenly felt very old. He left to write and produce cartoons for Disney, which made him feel young again – until he'd been there for ten years, at which point he felt old again. He left Disney to write My Name Is Will – A Novel of Sex, Drugs, and Shakespeare, which made Jess feel young again; but then he and Daniel Singer revised the Complete Works for its 20th anniversary and directed it in the West End, which made him feel old again. 69 A Reduced History

Since its pass-the-hat origins in 1981, the Reduced Shakespeare Company has created eleven world-renowned stage shows, two television specials, several failed TV pilots, and numerous radio pieces, all of which have been seen, performed, and heard the world over. The company's stops have included off-Broadway, the White House, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, London's West End, Seattle Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theatre and Montreal's famed Just For Laughs Festival, and performances in Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, Singapore and Bermuda, plus countless civic and university venues throughout the U.S.A., the UK, and Europe.

The RSC’s first three shows- The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged), and The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) - ran for nine years at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus as London’s longest-running comedies. For years the RSC had more shows running in the West End than Andrew Lloyd Webber. They were also funnier.

In 2019, the RSC unveiled Hamlet’s Big Adventure! (a prequel) which had its international premiere at the Tel Aviv Festival before embarking on a national tour of the USA. In honor of the company’s 35th anniversary and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016, the RSC premiered its tenth stage show, William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play (abridged), at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC. In 2013 they unveiled The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) to critical and commercial acclaim at both Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Merrimack Repertory Theatre, as well as on national tours of the U.S.A. and UK. In 2011 came the world premiere of The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged) which became Merrimack Repertory Theatre’s best-selling holiday show ever, and the third- best-selling show in MRT’s history and also enjoyed a successful run at San Diego Repertory Theatre as well as multiple tours across the USA.The Complete World of Sports (abridged) opened in 2010 at Merrimack Rep, toured the U.S.A. and UK, ran at the Arts Theatre in London during the 2012 London Olympics.

The “Bad Boys of Abridgment” applied their fast, funny and physical approach to world history in Western Civilization: The Complete Musical (abridged), which toured simultaneously in the U.S., UK and Australia; to literature in All the Great Books (abridged); and the 186 greatest movies of all time in Completely Hollywood (abridged): both of which played to great acclaim across the U.S. and in Great Britain, Holland, Ireland, and Sweden (in Swedish!).

For TV, the RSC compressed the first five seasons ofLost into a ten-minute film called Lost Reduced, and was a Jeopardy! category in the 2005 and 2006 Tournaments of Champions. They wrote and starred inThe Ring Reduced, a half-hour version of Wagner's Ring Cycle for Channel 4 (UK), and reduced the Edinburgh Festival for BBC and the soap opera Glenroe for RTE Ireland. Shakespeare (abridged) aired on PBS and is available on DVD, as is America (abridged).

RSC Books include Pop-Up Shakespeare (illustrated by Jennie Maizels), the irreverent reference book Reduced Shakespeare: The Complete Guide for the Attention- Impaired (abridged), and the comic memoir How The Bible Changed Our Lives (Mostly

70 For The Better). RSC scripts are published in the U.S. and UK and translated into dozens of languages.

The BBC World Service commissioned the six-part Reduced Shakespeare Radio Show, and the RSC has been heard multiple times on National Public Radio.

Wharton Center gratefully acknowledges individuals and organizations that have established named endowments to support Wharton Center through cash and/or their estate plans. Endowments provide a foundation of stability and support. These funds differ from others in that the total gift is invested. Each year, a portion of the income earned is spent while the remainder is added to the principal for growth. In this respect, an endowment is a perpetual gift.
