An improved entry of prime cattle met a little more bite in the trade and better averages on the week. Demand remains firm for quality cattle. Top price per kilo was 192p for a Limousin x heifer from Messrs. W.H. & L.M. Williams & Son of Allet purchased by Trevarthens of Roskrow with a 676kg British Blue x heifer from the same farm realising £1,203 to David Ellis of Lelant. Steers to a premium of 188p/kg for a Limousin x from Messrs. D.G. & S.L. Giles of Paul bought by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station with Messrs. Giles’ heavier 695kg steer top value at £1,230 and bought by David King of Exeter.

A decent entry of cull cows with a greater proportion of beef cows forward which sold to some of the best prices for a couple of months. The highest top prices seen in recent times for a super pair of Charolais x cows from Messrs. C.R. & I.E. White of Helston topping at 145p/kg and £1,340 for a 924kg beauty; and 135p/kg (£1,150), both bought by David King of Exeter. Standout Friesian from Messrs. C.J. Osborne & Son of Fraddon realising 125p/kg and £915 also to David King. Two cull bulls selling well with a South Devon from Messrs. C.D. & S.C. Rodda of Crantock topping at 105p/kg and £1,136 again to David King.

A fair number of store cattle forward between suckled calf sales. Trade was firm with good demand for a generally quality entry of cattle. Super steers again this week from Mr. R.E. Richards of St. Keverne saw his 18 month old Limousin x trio top at £1,175!! Four further Limousin x steers at £990 from a cracking run of over 30 mainly Limousins from Mr. H.J. May of Trispen which saw heifers sell to £795. Overall top heifers were older Herefords for Messrs. H.M, C.S. & M.A. Rowe of Ruan Minor making £880. A nice run of younger steers for Messrs. F.C. & B.R. Berryman of Pendeen saw Hereford and South Devon crosses to £825.

JOB OPPORTUNITY Cattle Management Assistant, Goss Moor NNR
Natural England currently owns a herd of 40 Pedigree Belted Galloway cattle comprising of a bull, cows, calves and replacement heifers. These deliver grazing across their land holding on Goss Moor National Nature Reserve and at Penrose Veor Farm, St. Dennis. The herd is spring calving and they are looking to build their herd size up over the next 3 to 4 years. Initially for 3 months, this role will provide support and expertise on the livestock regulations, welfare, husbandry, cross compliance and day to day management of the herd and grazing enterprise.
The post will also be required to support NE’s ability to fulfil its legal and contractual obligations associated with the conservation grazing as well as meeting public safety obligations.
