As the Church begins its entry into the Paschal Mystery, churches will be brightened on Holy Thursday with Altars of Repose, inviting pilgrims to visit Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. After the Mass of the Lord's Supper, during which Christians remember Jesus Christ's last meal with his Apostles on the night that he was arrested, the faithful remember Jesus's Agony in the Garden. After the Mass, the altar is stripped; all crosses are either removed or covered; the Blessed Sacrament is placed in a tabernacle on the Altar of Repose, and churches are open late for silent adoration. This is in response to the request Jesus made to his Apostles while they were in the Garden, as recorded in Gospel of Matthew 26:40, "Could you not, then, watch one hour with me?" There is a tradition of visiting 7 Altars of Repose after Holy Thursday Mass, going from one church to the next to pray before the Eucharist. The tradition of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday probably originated in Rome, as early pilgrims visited the seven basilicas as penance. Saint Philip Neri then organized a more formal way to visit 7 churches around 1553. He and a few friends would gather before dawn and set out on their "Seven Churches Walk". These pilgrimages were designed to be a counterpoint to the raucous behavior of Carnival. The Walks became very popular and began to attract others. So if you desire to pray on Holy Thursday night, our Altar of Repose will be open until Midnight. Enter through the church doors and follow the signs to the school chapel. Or if you want, visit surrounding Parish’s Altars of Repose to pray. This is a beautiful way to enter into the Sacred Triduum. Jesus asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and indifferent of whom He said: “These souls cause Me more suffering than any others; it was from such souls that My soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was on their account that I said: 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by.' The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy." If you would like to pray the Divine Mercy Novena you can find the prayers by the church exists. Also make note of our Parish’s Divine Mercy Holy Hour on April 8. As a reminder, Good Friday is an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon all Catholics from age 14 onwards. “Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again, ‘Crucify him.’” – MARK 15:12-13 Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help. Spending Time with God in Prayer. Pray the Divine Mercy Novena beginning on Good Friday. Read more about the Divine Mercy Novena and Prayer Service on page 3 of the bulletin.
