Together we hear some of the Church’s most beautiful prayers and scriptures and we make some of our finest music. Please look closely at the daily schedules in the yellow boxes throughout this bulletin and make plans to take part in the various liturgies and other gatherings on Holy Thursday night, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Above all, come on Saturday night for the Easter Vigil. Holy Thursday Brings an End to Lent. This night we begin the sacred three days that are at the center of our year. Three days – the Easter Triduum. Why are these three days so important? What do they mean for you? You are invited to make these three days different from all other days of the year. Adults in the community are invited to plan ahead so that the whole time from Thursday night until the Easter Vigil on Saturday night is free of social engagements, free even of work, entertainment, and meals except for simple nourishment. We are asked to fast on Good Friday and to continue fasting, if possible, all the way through Holy Saturday so that we come hungry and full of anticipation to the Easter Vigil.

    Maundy Thursday Eucharist of the Lord’s Supper with the Maundy or Washing of Feet Liturgy for Maundy Thursday Notes Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Triduum, the three-day observance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This is the first part of a continuous rite which encompasses the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday. This Liturgy is based on the Eucharist according to Scottish Liturgy 1982. If it is not possible for a congregation to celebrate the Eucharist, the rite may conclude after the Intercession with the Lord’s Prayer. In such circumstances, and subject to the availability of a Deacon or authorised lay minister, Communion from the reserved Sacrament may follow the Lord’s Prayer and before the altar is stripped. The reserved Sacrament may be placed on the altar of repose for the Watch. The Maundy The Act of Humility, Repentance, and Renewal is optional and may be omitted, only the rite for the Washing of Feet being performed. The Act of Humility, Repentance, and Renewal reminds the worshippers of their Baptism, and of the identification with Jesus Christ in his death, of which the Passion is the solemn commemoration. It brings to its conclusion the penitential discipline of Lent, and prepares for the celebration of new life at Easter. This Act may be followed either by sprinkling of the congregation with water taken from the font, symbolising the identification of the penitent Christian with the crucified Jesus through Baptism, or by the foot-washing i rite in which Jesus’ self-humiliating service to his disciples is recalled.

They are not to be taken to imply personal or moral criticism of those today or in the past who have adopted practices or advocated reforms which are subjected to criticism.     Holy Week Trinity Anglican Church Drawing by Sophie Fong Holy week and Easter are the oldest part of the Christian Year. Each day in Holy Week we meet to receive the Bread of Life in Holy Scriptures, Holy Sacraments, and Holy Fellowship. The purpose of Holy Week is to bring us into the presence of the living Christ, that we may be drawn deeper into His life, which is the very life of the God who IS Love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From the very early years of the Christian Church Christians gathered day by day the week before Easter to follow the events of the last week before Jesus’ death and resurrection. The reason is not hard to find. Easter is our Christian Passover. At Passover faithful Jews recall how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt and brought them into the Promised Land. They take care to remember and mark these things publicly because it is through these events that God called them and made them a people. Our Christian Passover looks back to the events through which God has called us and made us a people – ‘ a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation’ (1 Peter 2:9). We have been called out of slavery to sin and dark powers that are blind and care nothing for us through the waters of Baptism, just as the people of Israel were brought through the Red Sea. For the children of Israel, the desert was the place where God transformed them from a rag-tag collection of disgruntled slaves to a free and responsible nation of citizens united by law under God.

    A Customary for Deacons The Episcopal Diocese of Missouri Introduction This customary sets out guidelines for the role of deacons in liturgies, both in the local worshiping communities, and in diocesan liturgies, e.g. ordinations and confirmations. These should be considered norms for the liturgy. It has been approved by Bishop Deon and by the Community of Deacons for use in the diocese. The Deacon in the Liturgy--General Guidelines The Book of Common Prayer clearly establishes three distinct functions of a deacon in the liturgy: § Proclamation of the Gospel § Preparation of the Eucharistic Table § The Dismissal § Bidding the Confession § Bidding the Creed § Bidding the Prayers of the People If there is a deacon in a worshipping community, the deacon should carry out these functions in the Sunday liturgies and all major feasts and celebrations. The deacon is expected to serve in weekday liturgies as her/his schedule permits. Vestments The usual vestments for a deacon in celebrations of the Holy Eucharist are alb, dalmatic, and deacon’s stole in the appropriate liturgical color. If the worshiping community has dalmatics that match its chasubles, the deacon wears that dalmatic. If the worshiping community does not have matching vestments, a plain ivory or white dalmatic with the stole worn on the outside is appropriate and preferred. **Deacons are not required to own dalmatics.** In liturgies without a Eucharist, the deacon may wear an alb with deacon’s stole, or a cassock, surplice, and deacon’s stole. If the deacon is officiating at Morning or Evening Prayer, she/he may wear cassock and surplice with deacon’s stole, tippet, or academic hood.
