  • “FRANCE DESERVES to BE FREE”: CONSTITUTING FRENCHNESS in MARINE LE PEN's NATIONAL FRONT/NATIONAL RALLY Submitted By
THESIS “FRANCE DESERVES TO BE FREE”: CONSTITUTING FRENCHNESS IN MARINE LE PEN’S NATIONAL FRONT/NATIONAL RALLY Submitted by Lauren Seitz Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2020 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Karrin Anderson Julia Khrebtan-Hörhager Courtenay Daum Copyright by Lauren Nicole Seitz 2020 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT “FRANCE DESERVES TO BE FREE”: CONSTITUTING FRENCHNESS IN MARINE LE PEN’S NATIONAL FRONT/NATIONAL RALLY This thesis employs constitutive rhetoric to analyze French far-right politician Marine Le Pen’s discourse. Focusing on ten of Le Pen’s speeches given between 2015 and 2019, I argue that Le Pen made use of Kenneth Burke’s steps of scapegoating and purification as a way to rewrite French national identity and constitute herself as a revolutionary political leader. Le Pen first identified with the subjects and system that she scapegoats. Next, she cast out elites, globalists, and immigrants, identifying them as scapegoats of France’s contemporary identity split. Finally, by disidentifying with the scapegoats, Le Pen constituted her followers as always already French patriots and herself as her leader. This allowed her to propose a new form of French national identity that was undergirded by far-right ideals and discourse of revolution. This thesis presents several implications for understanding contemporary French national identity, the far right, and women politicians. It also contributes to the project of internationalizing public address research in Communication Studies. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, thank you to my advisor, Kari Anderson. I truly could not have completed this thesis without your guidance, encouragement, and advice.

  • Sexist News Commentary on the Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin
Three Networks, Two Candidates, One Problem: Sexist News Commentary During Hillary Clinton’s Presidential and Sarah Palin’s Vice-Presidential Campaigns Drue Marr | University of Nebraska – Lincoln This paper examines the political commentary of three major U.S. television news networks for their portrayal and criticism of and sexist commentary on Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin during their 2008 presidential campaigns and Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. I reviewed coverage by CNN, the news source “bordering the neutral zone” (Langlois); MSNBC, the news outlet with a “slightly more lib- eral audience” (Blake); and Fox News, the “perceived as right-leaning” media outlet (Rothwell). While I originally sought to assess imbalances in criticism of these women from opposing parties on each net- work (would one woman “catch a break” on a certain network but not from others), I instead found an even display of criticism and negative portrayal based on sexist commentary across all three. This find- ing suggests a connection between openly biased and sexist news media coverage of female candidates for national political office and underrepresentation of women in congressional and presidential politics. Through negative commentary on female politicians’ appearance, family roles, and competence based on stereotypes like “emotionality,” mainstream news media play a powerful role in women’s continuing struggle to occupy the White House. In 2013, the United States broke a record for number of women” (Zhou) with 117 women the highest number of women elected to the elected to Congress, totaling 127 seats held United States Congress. Out of the total 535 by female politicians. Even with this seats in Congress, 101 of those seats were ground-breaking surge of incredible women occupied by women, including 20 in the stepping into the political arena, a whopping Senate (Blackwill).

the parties were a battle between the sexes. AMERICAN CHRONICLES Republicans and Democrats are “just like men and women,” Trent Lott liked to say: Democrats might be from Venus, but THE WOMAN CARD the G.O.P. is “the party of Mars.” Dem- ocrats have talked about a Republican How feminism and antifeminism created Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. “war on women”; Trump says, of Clin- ton, “The only card she has is the woman BY JILL LEPORE card.” She polls better among women; he polls better among men. The immediacy and starkness of the contrast between the candidates obscures the historical re- alignment hinted at in their own biogra- phies: she used to be a Republican and he used to be a Democrat. This election isn’t a battle between the sexes. But it is a bat- tle between the parties, each hoping to win the votes of women without losing the votes of men. It’s also marked by the sweeping changes to American politics caused by women’s entry into public life. Long before women could vote, they car- ried into the parties a political style they had perfected first as abolitionists and then as prohibitionists: the moral crusade. No election has been the same since. or a very long time, the parties had no idea what to do with women. At Fthe nation’s founding, women made an argument for female citizenship based on their role as mothers: in a republic, the civic duty of women is to raise sons who will be virtuous citizens. Federalists dofed their top hats, and no more.

‘The World is Not a Safe Place for Men’: The Representational Politics of the Manosphere Mary Lilly Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In fulfillment of the requirements for the MA in Political Science Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Mary Lilly, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis offers an overview of the representational politics of the online antifeminist community known as the ‘manosphere’. It ana- lyzes how gender and gender politics are represented in the discourse, with an eye to how traditional gender constructs, and traditional gen- dered norms and inequalities, are reproduced. This project—the first study to focus exclusively on the mano- sphere—contributes to our understanding of the community in two ways; it addresses a significant gap in the literature on the topic, and it tests the accuracy of the ‘conventional wisdom’ on the manosphere. Using mixed-methods critical discourse analysis, the study ana- lyzed the discourse of the two primary subcultures of the community, and found that traditional gender norms and relations are reproduced therein, and that for the most part the conventional wisdom is accu- rate: femininity and women are disparaged, masculinity is imagined to be ‘in crisis’ (constantly under siege by feminizing forces), and feminism is represented as hypocritical and oppressive. ii Acknowledgements A thank you to my supervisor, Paul Saurette, who supported me when I needed support, challenged me when I needed to be chal- lenged, for his invaluable guidance, compassion, and expertise, and for all he has helped me to learn over the past almost three years.
