Naval version of BrahMos:

Why in news?

A naval version of the BrahMos missile was successfully test-fired from a stealth INS in the Arabian Sea. Recently, has also successfully test fired a new version of the surface-to-surface version of the BrahMos.

Significance of test:

The flight testing of the missiles came in the midst of India’s bitter border row with China in eastern Ladakh. BrahMos as ‘prime strike weapon’ will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges. India has already deployed the BrahMos missiles in several strategic locations along the de-facto border with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.

About BrahMos Missile:

BrahMos Missile is the first supersonic cruise missile system known to be in service. It has been developed by the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, which is a joint venture between:

Russia’s Mashinostroeyenia and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

It derives its name from the names of two rivers, namely the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

Features of BrahMos:

It is capable of carrying a conventional as well as nuclear warhead of 300 kilograms. It is a multi-stage missile having a solid propellant in the first stage and the ramjet liquid propellant in

the second stage. It operates on ‘Fire and Forget Principle’ by adopting varieties of flights on its way to the target. The present supersonic version could reach a speed of 2.8 times that of sound (2.8 Mach). It has a system known as standoff range weapons, which are fired from a range sufficient to allow the attacker to evade defensive fire from the adversary.

INS Chennai: Commissioned in 2016, the indigenously designed Kolkata-class stealth-guided missile destroyer, designed to carry the BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system.

About the scheme:

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has recently notified PLI Scheme. Tenure: Scheme will be active for 5 years with financial year (FY) 2019-20 considered as the base year for calculation of incentives. It would give incentives of 4-6 per cent to electronics companies which manufacture mobile phones and other electronic components. According to the scheme, companies that make mobile phones which sell for Rs 15,000 or more will get an incentive of up to 6 per cent on incremental sales of all such mobile phones made in India. Companies which are owned by Indian nationals and make such mobile phones, the incentive has been kept at Rs 200 crore for the next four years.

Which companies will be considered?

All electronic manufacturing companies which are either Indian or have a registered unit in India will be eligible to apply for the scheme.

What kind of investments will not be considered?

All investment done by companies on land and buildings for the project will not be considered for any incentives or determine eligibility of the scheme.
