January 3, 2021 Parish Mission Dear Parishioners, Statement Happy Birthday to Chung Ma of our maintenance staff The Peace of Christ calls us to whose birthday always kicks off the new year! Today is the create a Christian Community feast of the of the Lord. It used to be always where God is found in the beauty and joy of our worship; celebrated on January 6th, the 12th day after (and in the breadth of our outreach; was a Holy Day of Obligation in Canada, though August 15th and in our love for one another. was not). Epiphany was also called , the day commemorating the presentation of gifts to the baby by the three magi. Some say the magi were wise men, others say they were kings. One tradition has them coming from each of the three continents known to exist in the world of that day, parts of each of which are east of ; and some have gone so far as to name the three magi and to identify not only the continent from which they came but also the gift which they brought to present: with from Asia, with from St. St. John the St. James Europe, and Balthazar with from Africa In that frankincense Church Evangelist Church 25 Empire Church 130 Brett Rd. masked odors, gold distanced itself from the other two gifts in value, and Blvd. 553 Humboldt St. myrrh provided a final sanitizing after death, they’d have been the perfect gifts in time of a pandemic! Our Peace of Christ Parish Community staff mission is to deepen the presence of Jesus, in ourselves and among all in our parish, by loving, empowering and serving others in their need today. Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Page Five

LITURGY C EPIPHANY 2021 O R Today’s solemnity continues the celebration of the N astonishing mystery of God’s manifestation to the very ends E of the earth. As foreigners from the East are led to the infant R Christ in today’s Gospel, we see the mysterious ways in which God arranges for an “epiphany” (or manifestation, showing) of Christ to the world. The love of God’s glory shines forth in Christ our Light, through whom we are renewed and remade in God’s image and likeness. Today’s psalm 72 gives us more images for what the fullness of God’s kingdom will look like when “every nation on earth will adore” the Creator. We are told that this time is also set apart by care for the poor whose lives God “shall save.” With its images of peace and justice, today’s psalm is one of comfort, hope, and also of challenge. When we look at the world, we can see many places where this peace and justice do not yet reign, areas where the lives of the poor are endangered and threatened. In this time where calendars are everywhere (from watches, phones and computers to the paper calendars that hang on our walls), some may not see the value of today’s sung proclamation before the Gospel: the “Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts”. This proclamation conveys something more than just dates and holidays. It reminds us, the faithful, that as the days of Christmastide continue, there is a connection between the nativity and the resurrection, and that the whole of the Christian year—-the whole of our Christian lives—-orbits the day of resurrection. Today’s “sister proclamation” “The Nativity of our Lord, Jesus Christ,” that was chanted before Mass on Christmas Eve (11PM & Midnight), helps to place the resurrection event even more completely in the context of salvation history. Be sure to bless your home today on this beautiful Feast of the Epiphany. Samples of this ritual can be found on several internet sites, including the USCCB. After the prayers of the blessing are recited, walk through the house and bless each room. Take chalk and write the initials of the three Wise Men, connected with Crosses, over the inside of your front door (on the lintel, if possible). Then write the year, breaking up the numbers and the year so that they fall on both sides of the initials. It should look like this: 20 C+M+B 21 with the “ 20being the millennium and century,“the “C” standing for the first Wise Man, Caspar, the “M” standing for Melchior, the “B” standing for Balthasar, and the “ ”21standing for the decade and year. It is also believed that the Kings’ initials stand for “Christus mansionem benedicat” (Christ bless this house). How can you be a light of love for all nations and all peoples? As we pray psalm 72, consider how attending to the work of peace and justice and care for the poor can be accomplished in your own life. May 2021 bless you with God’s peace and light. - adapted from 2021 Sourcebook (Liturgical Press) & Living Liturgy 2021 (LTP)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which Happy Belated Birthday adults (and children over the age of Chung Ma 7) are brought into the Catholic Maintenance Staff Church. It is a very enriching pro- cess. If you or someone you know might be interested in this process, please contact Melissa Mang at 288-5000 ext. 121 or by email at [email protected]. This is an on-going pro- cess to prepare adults for reception into the Church. Page Six Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
