ST AUGUSTINE of CANTERBURY MAY 26th

With other monks, in about AD 596, the Italian Saint Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory to evangelize the heathen Anglo-Saxons at what is now known as Britain. Received with great caution by King Ethelbert at Kent, he was allowed to preach, and he was given a house in Caterbury. Baptising King Ethelbert and numerous numbers of his people in AD 601, St Augustine worked to build the first cathedral at Cantebury where he became its first bishop. He also founded the Sts. Peter and Paul Monastery at Canterbury, and he established Sees at both Rochester and London. Although controversary exits, he is considered the “apostleof the English”. Pope Gregory directed St Augustine not to destroy pagan temples, but only the idols within. He founded a school in Canterbury that was known for producing books and an established a library. The manuscript referred to as “The Gospels of St Augustine” was brought by him to England, and is used for the enthronement of archbishops of Canterbury. Thought to be a miracle worker throughout his life, his feast day is celebrated on May 26th (some say May 27th), which was the day of his death. No pictures or drawings of him exist, but his thought to be likeness is featured in a stained-glass window design at Christ College, Oxford. He is considered the patron for both printers and theologians.

NEW YORK NUNS MOVE TO ACNA

Sisters of the oldest Anglican order in the USA (1865) voted in April to leave The Episcopal Church and affiliate with the Anglican Church in North America. The Community of St. Mary- Eastern Province is now part of the Diocese of the Living Word with Bishop Julian Dobbs. Currently situated in Greenwich, , the sisters operate a small farm where they host retreats and practice a healing ministry. On joining ACNA Morther Miriam stated: “We believe in so doing we stay within the rich traditions of historic Anglican doctrine and worship rather than acquience to the cultural maelstrom many Christian denominations try to accommodate.” Their website is: www.stmaryseast.net

SUNDAY - MAY 9th

SUNDAY – MAY 30th ASCENSION DAY – MAY 13th

WHAT ARE ROGATION DAYS?

The 6th Sunday in Easter is traditionally known as “Rogation Sunday.” This is because the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the following week are known as the “Rogation Days,” days for fasting and prayer. The Thursday of that week is the feast of the Ascension, which comes on a Thursday, the 40th day after Easter (when Easter Sunday is counted as the 1st day). “Rogation Days are the three days preceding Ascension Day, especially devoted to asking for God’s blessing on agriculture and industry”. Churches will often mark the Rogation days with a “Rogation procession,” and the praying of the Great Litany. As the 2019 BCP notes, “The Great Litany is especially appropriate for Rogation days, other days of fasting or thanksgiving, and occasions of solemn and comprehensive entreaty” (pg. 6).

ST PETER’S FLEECE VESTS AVAILABLE

A limited number of handsome fleece vests are available for purchase by St Peter’s parishioners. Each vest has the St Peter’s Anglican Church red shield logo emblazoned on the upper left, along with the church’s name and location. The vests were secured in a special one-time only buy, and are limited to only 20 vests. Most vests are gray in color with a few in moss green. Each vest has two exterior zippered pockets and two interior pockets. Sizes are also limited as follows: medium, large, x-large and xx-large. Sorry, no smalls! The cost for each vest is only $25.00. If all vests are sold a small profit will go the parish’s College Scholarship Fund. Vests may be secured from Terry Dunn.

ROBERT WILLIAMS 1925 – 2021 It is with sadness that we learned of the death of Robert Williams on March 29th of this year. Robert, and his wife Naomi who preceded him in death were most active in the life of St Peter’s after moving to Fort Collins from Estes Park. Robert was always supportive of Naomi who was usually engaged in parish activities, including chairing a very successful rummage sale that increased the parish’s building fund by over $5,000.00 Robert and Naomi were both born in England and each had moved to Canada for employment, but they only met and were eventually married in Canada. Most of his professional life was in the airline industry related to aircraft safety. Robert was a very quiet person who loved his family and the Lord. It was Robert who contributed the funds to remodel the church kitchen in loving memory of Naomi. On his departure in 2019 to elder care near his son in Missouri, he presented the brass bell which currently hangs at the kitchen entrance. He is survived by his son Adam, daughter Claire and grandson Douglas Williams. Please say a heart-felt prayer for Robert, and the next time you pass by the bell give it a gentle ring in his memory.

SHORT INFORMATION NOTES

Thank you for signing up for the Kings Soopers non-profit sharing program for St. Peter’s. This past month the church received a nice check for $56.31!

Treasurer Jerry Webb reports that a total of $1,789.93 was collected for donation to the Bishop’s Well Fund. If you would like to have a new coin bottle to begin your coin collection for next year’s program you will find one in the church narthex.

A new Kestrel nesting box has been added to the parking lot light pole in hopes of attracting a spring Kestrel couple. Hopefully this small falcon couple will move into the box and raise a nice family who will feed off of the many mice in the church field.

Thank you to Deacons Fawn and Tom, Beverly and Terry, Marnie, Stacey and Donell for packing two boxes on Friday, April 16th, that were then shipped off to the of the Zeteo Missions in the Philippines.

BEING CONFIRMED ON MAY 16th St. Peter’s has had a great group of young people attending a weekly Bible Study on Sunday nights since early January as a way of approaching a study of our Anglican Catechism. Led by Megan Roberts with assistance to Anthony Alvarado and Deacon Tom, a group of 20 young people have been digging deep into God’s Word, studying what it means to be made in God’s image, what are Holy Places and Temples, Covenants and Sacraments and ultimately- Salvation. In this way, we have approached the topics included in our catechism. The class will have 6 members confirmed on May 16 including Rourke, Lydia and Francesca Alvarado and Ben, Carol and Grace DeLorme. The class also includes members that are already confirmed, but longing to study the Word of God and younger members who may be confirmed in years to come. It has been a joy to see the engagement, the excellent questions and the perseverance of these young people through four months of weekly study. They are a blessing to our Church.

MAZE OF ANGLICAN CLERGY TITLES #2

Bishop-elect A person who has been chosen to become a bishop, but who has not yet been consecrated. The word “elect” does not necessarily mean “democratically elected.” It simply means “chosen.” Anglican bishops are selected by a variety of means: some are elected by the clergy and laity of the diocese where they will serve, but some are selected by a specially- constituted committee (often called an “Electoral College”). In England, historically, bishops were simply appointed, by the Monarch. Canon “Canon” is an honorary title conferred upon a member of the clergy (and some lay persons) for faithful and valuable service to the church. For a more complete article and photo, click here. See also “prebendary.” Chaplain A member of the clergy whose employment is not in a parish or congregation, but does pastoral care and organizes worship services within a non-religious organization: eg. a hospital chaplain, a school chaplain, or a military chaplain. Less commonly, a “chaplain” may be a spiritual advisor and personal assistant to a bishop, or to a monarch. Coadjutor A bishop who has been appointed to assist a diocesan bishop. Generally, a Coadjutor automatically becomes Diocesan in his or her own right, upon the retirement or resignation of the person currently in that office. See also Suffragan. Commissary A person appointed to exercise the administrative functions of a bishop, when the actual bishop is either away from the diocese or is ill. A commissary may not perform any of the spiritual functions of a bishop, such as ordinations. The position of commissary is usually not a permanent one, and expires immediately upon the return of the bishop. Curate A deacon or a priest who functions as an assistant or subordinate to the Incumbent of a parish. The word “curate” refers to the “cure of souls” or “care” of souls, and suggests a primary and senior responsibility (indeed, in a French-speaking Roman Catholic church the senior priest of a parish is called a curé); however, in the Anglican Church, a curate is always an assistant. Dean The most common meaning of this word in Anglicanism is, ‘a priest who is the Incumbent of a cathedral, and the most senior priest of a diocese (under the bishop). This title is not to be confused with academic deans. But please note that there are other Anglican officials with “dean” in their titles; see Regional Dean. Diocesan A bishop who is in charge of a Diocese. It is correct to say either “the Diocesan” or “the diocesan bishop” when referring to this office. The Diocesan may also be referred to as “the Ordinary.” Honorary ______An “Honorary Assistant,” or “Honorary Curate” (and a few other variants) indicates an ordained person who functions as of the clergy in a parish, but does so on a voluntary basis. He or she may have other employment, or be retired from full-time paid ministry, but will preach, preside, or do pastoral care in the parish without receiving a living wage for it. 2 The position is usually quite official, formally designated as such by license from the Bishop.
