But his prose has a wistfulness that sometimes lifts it into something loftier because he mixes bleak existential dread with an awareness of fragile, heart-stopping beauty. By: Jo Nesbo , and others. There is always another nut job serial killer out there and who else can find them? I decide to finish the book but never read another woman, as this moment like many in The Snowman and several others in this book amount to torture porn. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. I regret to say that my favourite Scandinavian Knave detective really pushed the boundaries in this outing. The book's main character Harry Hole is Dead Sleep. Great character Harry Hole. Kaja Solness, newest member of the Crime Squad within the Oslo Police, is sent to coax him back, explaining that the Squad has come upon a potential new serial killer whose methods are horrific. Nesbo is An Excellent Writer. Trying to pick it up where I left off. As for Sean Barrett, I can't imagine Harry without him. You can read our review of Police here. After The Snowman, Harry Hole has earned the reputation as the serial killer slayer. A Conspiracy of Faith. But I fear for Harry's mental health in the future. Harry has more lives than a cat, and the only reason I know he is g Harry is back as his self-destructive, bastard self in this 8th instalment, and somehow my fondness for him grows. However, the story is captivating and thrilling from the very beginning to the end and keeps you in suspense all the time. Because of the fresh traumas stemming from the case, Hole is determined to return to Hong Kong for good. This is a dark and intense mystery. I decided to pick up the latest book by Jo Nesbo - billed as the "Norwegian Stieg Larsson" - because I was curious about this new trend of explicitly gruesom I'm not a fan of crime fiction, unless it was written by Raymond Chandler, but that's not crime fiction - that's noir literature. The Leopard: A Harry Hole Thriller Writer Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. His personal life is a mess, too. He is unmoved by the thought of yet another serial killer, but returns to Oslo when he learns that his father is in hospital with not long to live. The story also moves to Goma, Congo, though it opens in Hong Kong, where Harry has fled the life of detectiving and his relationship to Rakel after the traumatizing events of The Snowman, his last book because twice now his work has endangered her and her son Oleg, who sees HH as his father. An arrest by Kripos of the potential killer goes horribly wrong when an airtight alibi is given and Hole is left holding the blame. It is only when Hole visits The Snowman in prison that he obtains a means of approaching the case that might help. Hole is just annoying and a coward - he doesn't even get inebriated as suavely as Chandler and Hammett characters. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Despite his failings Harry is still such a likeable character and always smart enough to win out over criminals and bent police officers. Alas, no armor exists strong enough to keep Harry from his demons, or the rest of us from Harry. Harry Hole, making his seventh appearance in a Nesbo novel, to be is just a sad sack of shit who can't get his life together. Simples - just work out who else was there and put them under a microscope. So let me recommend Jo Nesbo to you. Two young women are found murdered in Oslo, both drowned in their own blood. All stars 5 star only 4 star only 3 star only 2 star only 1 star only. For years, detective Harry Hole has been at the center of every major criminal investigation in Oslo. Hilfreichste Neueste. I loved it!! Better yet, start with The Redbreast and read your way through one of the best crime fiction series currently available. Views Read Edit View history. This won't keep me from reading on, but I am trusting that Harry has not plateaued. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Glass Key for best Nordic crime novel. The bad, or at least, ambiguous news for the novel's characters is good news for the rest of us: There will, it seems, be more of these. The murder has been solved. Holer is a great main character, sufficiently floored without being a train wreck, and the writing is tight and well drawn. I refrain from any details of the case itself and the line of promising suspects investigated. Ugh, just typing that and knowing how they die makes my blood curdle. There is even some personal growth on Hole's immediate family front, where both sister and father play a limited by significant role in the larger narrative. He's been away for some time, but his ghosts have a way of catching up with him. Somehow, they figure that all the victims stayed at a particular alpine cabin on a particular night. Hole comes to believe that the murderer is someone whom he knows, but the person he suspects is exonerated upon arrest. The philosophy, the story, the unfolding of the plot - all perfect. The Leopard: A Harry Hole Thriller Reviews When a drug bust turns into a bloodbath, it's up to Inspector Macbeth and his team to clean up the mess. Sonny's on the run. The Thirst: Harry Hole The crime scenes offer no clues, the media is reaching fever pitch, and the police are running out of options. The next half of the book had me hooked, great story and so many potential baddies, I couldn't put it down. Yes the Snowman was great but I think this is one step further on to perfection. Having said that, there is much to commend in this novel which is well written and evidently well translated. See our disclaimer. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Nottingham Trent Institutional Repository (IRep) Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole Murray Pratt The vantage points of international allegory Whether measured by sales figures, reach, celebrity standing, cultural influence or departure-lounge sightings, it is beyond contestation that Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole Thriller series (1997–2014) has joined detective fiction’s big league. And while both author and character are firmly rooted in Norwegian society and culture (the former played football for Molde FK and is a member of the band Di Derre; the latter is drawn back to Oslo and its underworlds despite his globe-trotting tendencies), their respective successes have been enjoyed on an international scale. Since the first English-language translation of a Hole Thriller was released (Marekors/The Devil’s Star in 2005 [2003]), the series has gone on to sell over 23 million copies worldwide. Surfing the wave of ‘Nordic Noir’, or ‘Scandicrime’ with a profile to rival Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series (2004–07) or television’s Forbrydelsen/The Killing (DR1, 2007–12) and Broen/Bron/The Bridge (SVT1/DR1, 2011–), Hole’s adventures are increasingly branded and marketed as emblematic of this now established genre— witness the sepia-tinted, Stieg Larsson-inspired city maps that lead readers into Oslo’s cityscape in Vintage’s 2013 release of Politi/Police, together with the back-page testimony from the Sunday Mirror’s Deirdre O’Brien: ‘Scandinavian crime thrillers don’t come much darker or more tense than the bestselling Harry Hole series’.
