“Your Local Independent Family Funeral Directors” Pastoral Letter Our Vicar is still on sick leave so the Venerable Dennis Wight has written the pastoral letter for us this month.

Dear Friends, When it’s cold outside with the rain beating and cold, there is nothing like being in the cwtch with a fish pie and a drop of the amber nectar. These are consoling moments: safe inside from the stormy weather. However, having dogs means getting out whatever it is like. Early in the mornings inclement or not, they fidget loudly announcing that daytime is here and a walk is imminent.

However, there is also recognition of consolation when faced with the weather full on, whatever it is like. On the estuary there can be abrupt changes and the dogs will be frisky and up for anything – alive in a storm, even in horizontal rain and me head down and collared up. At these moments the clouds seem to be a dark grey blanket with hints of blue rowan moving faster than the nearby passing train; biting wind nipping my cheeks and hands. The consolation is that these changes in the weather remind me I am not on my own in those surprising moments of mood: these physical changes outside give me a visual of the internal feelings I sometimes experience within.

Over these past months many have endured awful floods and there have been floods of tears too. Walking over muddy fields above my home reminds me of those days when my mind has felt like walking through porridge. We all know of experiences like that when routine tasks felt easy one day and difficult to cope with on the next.

The consolation is that when I see the estuary’s sudden weather changes, I am reminded that as the Gwendraeth can sometimes appear cheerless and soggy so can my internal mood. It is an inspiration to me that if the Gwendraeth can get through the weather then so can I. Last month, we were walking again towards Cydweli enjoying the cerulean blue of the sea and sky then we turned for home and the Towy. Before us was the mood change, above and below; it looked like a great sun roof closing off the blue from the north. Within seconds there was wind, rain, sleat and frisky dogs! We looked back towards the sun and where we had walked to see the gentle hues of a rainbow. These words from “O love that wilt not let me go” come to mind: “I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain that morn shall tearless be” With every blessing, Dennis New & Second-Hand Scooters Bought & Sold inc. Death is our final enemy, but we know that Jesus conquered death, and offers us eternal life. ‘I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.’ Psalm 34:4. We can take our anxiety and depression to Him because He wants to help us. He will always listen to us and help us.

From Christmas to Easter In a change this year, we will not buy roses at Easter; we have a new project which will become apparent on Easter Sunday, but we will still need flowers. So if you would like to donate £3.00 in memory or thanksgiving of someone to buy flowers for this Easter project, please either email me with your message ([email protected] ) or drop your message and donation in with Eileen Bryant in Lady Street. Any money not used for flowers will be put into church funds which are very much depleted in these continuing difficult times.

We remember is our prayers all those families in the parish who are ill at this time and those who mourn the loss of loved ones. Almighty God, whose Son our Lord Jesus Christ was made perfect by the things that he suffered: have compassion on those who are passing through illness and pain. Uphold their faith, that they may trust and not be afraid; and give them the comfort and strength of your presence, for your tender mercy's sake. Amen. For all those who have died in the parish in recent times - May they rest in peace and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Donating for a Painting While the pandemic we have faced this past year has been challenging, it has also for me opened new and unexpected doors and opportunities which I would like to share with you. Some of you will recognise me as being Treasurer for St Mary's and St Teilo's Church. I retired from part time work in early 2020 so found myself with time on my hands before the first lockdown came. However it was only when my world shrank to the limited confines of my small cottage and the shores of , that a new opportunity opened its doors. I have been learning watercolour painting at a regular group in for a few years and rarely painted between lessons but none the less had a few paintings stuffed behind my sofa. Also prior to the lockdown, I had experimented with some acrylic painting too. With lockdown in full surge, the urge to paint helped me fill some of my vacant hours. The space behind my sofa was limited and from a discussion with a friend exploring the ideas of a gift economy, I realised I could maybe use my amateur paintings to raise funds for the local lifeboat. This was the start of Donating for a Painting in April 2020. At the time little did I realise how from such a small seed how big this venture would grow. Almost a year on I have sold countless paintings to raise funds for different charities including Ferryside Lifeboat, Smile Train, Christian Aid, Water Aid, Crisis UK, Salvation Army and St Thomas’ Church, Ferryside. It never ceases to amaze me that people like my paintings and are willing to make a donation for them. I have sent paintings to America and across the UK as well as locally. Through people’s generosity I have raised just over £3,000. So out of the pandemic I have seen my skills as an amateur artist grow and flourish with wonderful encouragement from my family, friends and supporters. What has been even more surprising has been receiving requests for commissioned work. They have challenged me sometimes to step outside my painting comfort zone. I guess the moral of this story is to recognise we all have gifts and abilities that given the right environment and encouragement can flourish. So think about what you might like to try. You can find my paintings for sale in the Facebook market place and on my Donating for a Painting page in Facebook too. If you would like to join my growing group of friends and supporters, you can also reach me via Facebook or email [email protected]. Thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far and making this difficult year so much more bearable. Below are just two examples of my paintings. Although we can't meet in person, there is still so much we can do as members of MU. I can't stress enough, it's not what we get out of belonging but what we put in. Thanks to those who contributed to the recent Plant Dewi Baby Bundle appeal. This is an ongoing project, so anything you have I will get to Wendy in Carmarthen. Mothering Sunday is a special time to say thank you to all mothers and caregivers for the selflessness with which they nurture, love and help us to flourish. Social togetherness is more important now than it ever was. Traditional festival days and related celebratory events in the calendar bring people together and strengthen communities. Mothering Sunday has come a long way from its origins but remains a means of fostering closeness. In the Middle Ages back in the 16th century, on Mothering Sunday, people used to return to the church where they were baptised, or the local parish church. This was known as their ‘mother church’. The essence of this practice was that people remained in touch with the they had grown up in. The actual service took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and symbolised the coming together of families. As time moved on, the make-up of communities entered a stage of transition. Mothering Sunday was adapted to fit the evolving nature of local people and places. Many families became dispersed due to upheavals within society. Related to this, the practices associated with the day changed too. Further changes and challenges to the observance. As practices gradually changed, it became a day when servants of large households and country estates were allowed to return home to visit their families. The traditions associated with the day were changing too. The day itself became less focused on the religious roots and more about specific relations within families. By the early 20th century the practice of returning to one’s ‘mother church’ had become so neglected in the UK and Ireland that there were calls to revive it from social activists of the time. Consequently, decisions were made throughout the country to incorporate wider practices from across the Christian faiths and bring back a festival. During the 1950’s, figures in business spotted commercial opportunities on offer. Thus, the commercialisation of the day both secured its endurance and altered its significance in the minds of the population. D . E . In modern times, there has been increased commercialisation and secular uptake. Mothering Sunday has become very much a recognition of the role of a mother in contemporary society. Gifts are sold, flowers are bought and cards are sent. Mothers of all kinds wake up across the country knowing that this is their day: a day to be treated to lavish days out and receive gifts from loved ones. Despite the commercial forces driving the recognition, it is an important day for families coming together. Those people lucky enough to find themselves in the role of a mother to another person, can spend their time on Mothering Sunday feeling cherished. Stronger bonds within families lead to stronger bonds within communities. In potentially fractious times, this is more vital than ever. Since 2006 our Make a Mother's Day Appeal has celebrated this and our ethical gifts have the added benefit of making a difference to mothers and caregivers in communities all around the world. For Mothering Sunday (14th March 2021) we are reaching out to our communities and beyond, whether you are part of Mothers’ Union or not, there is something for everyone to celebrate. Yes, I want to give a gift of togetherness! Look on the Mothers' Union web page for details www.mothersunion.org

Praying with Purpose In February I attended an online MU Zoom webinar on prayer: a useful exercise on how to prepare our prayers and prayer time. The aim of Praying with Purpose is to help build our faith for prayer, and make it as accessible as possible for a wide variety of people, for groups and individuals at home as we come to pray for each other, for projects and for initiatives. As we do this, we live out our aim to base everything we do as Mothers’ Union on a foundation of prayer. As we try to keep our MU group viable try this yourselves using the Lord's Prayer: Brenda

Lord, teach us to pray. Luke 11:1

As you pray for each other, your projects and initiatives, try basing your intercessions on the prayer Jesus taught his disciples when they asked him how they should pray Pray each of the stanzas of the prayer as divided below, pausing to reflect on the words before praying and sharing.

Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, Begin by using prayer and Bible verses to bring praise and worship to God, our holy, heavenly Father your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as in heaven. Share news, answers to prayer of the initiative which you are bringing to God - which is a particular practical example of God’s kingdom on earth Give us today our daily bread. Bring before God ongoing and new prayer needs on behalf of the initiative and those who are involved in running it Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Admit our need for God’s forgiveness for our own shortcomings as a precursor to showing any forgiveness needed e.g. for those who have made the initiative necessary in the first place; or those who may be obstructing it. If these aren’t appropriate in your particular case, you may wish to include more general prayers for/of forgiveness for the way we fail to follow the values of Christ… Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Pray for perseverance when initial enthusiasm wanes; or opposition is proving to be difficult; when answers to prayer seem slow…. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen Finish with praise and an acknowledgement of God’s power and majesty etc….

From a letter by Rev. Marcus Zipperlen:

During our diocesan year of prayer I draw your attention to an opportunity to undertake a ‘prayer of activity’ by participating in the ‘Virtual Pilgrimage to COP26 with St Davids Diocese’. “COP26” is the United Nations climate conference happening in Glasgow from 1st November at which it is crucial governments agree sufficiently rapid programmes for reducing greenhouse emissions to protect the integrity of God’s creation and the well-being of all people. It is 408 miles from St Davids cathedral to Glasgow centre and you are invited to prayerfully make that pilgrimage either by yourself or sharing the distance within a group, starting on St Davids day this March 1st and ending on 1st November when the conference begins. It amounts to just under 2 miles per day (excluding Sundays). Naturally we shall have to be guided in what we can do by Covid regulations. If walking and sponsorship go together in your mind you might consider raising some money to protect creation though a suitable charity. And if walking really isn’t your thing then you can participate by offering two minutes of daily prayer for creation over those 210 days. We shall circulate details of how to get involved over the next few weeks. Look out on the Diocesan website or St. Mary's Church website.

Town News Thank you Before finally locking the door of 'House of Curls' I recalled all the chatter that filled the air along with the hum of the driers, remembering all the customers that passed by the desk that Janet and I spent many happy years making appointments for. In the latter years we worked fewer hours which suited both Janet and me. We were never ones to talk of retirement as the buzz of the shop recharged our batteries. Sadly, due to the pandemic, it was with heavy hearts that we decided it was time for our journey to come to an end after fifty wonderful years. We would like to thank Kath for her kind words and it was truly uplifting to know the shop had that effect in the town. Last but not least I'd like to thank all our loyal customers/friends and staff who have helped out over so many happy years. We look forward to meeting you all again for a chat and a cup of tea when it is safe to do so. Thank you all so much, Sandra

KIDWELLY SENIOR CITIZENS Surprisingly a year has passed since we last had a meeting. Surprisingly, because although some of the days were long, the months whizzed by. But now we have the days drawing out, snowdrops and bulbs starting to flower, and spring is surely on its way. The majority of us have had our first jabs and perhaps, as we read this, the lockdown will have been eased slightly. We send Get Well wishes to those who have had Covid, have been ill or incurred injuries, and hope you are all on the mend. Special birthdays so far this year have been Sandra Evans, 70, Rosemary Brookman, 80, and in March Elizabeth Jones, 80 and Ann Burt, 80. So congratulations to you all, and even more ongratulations to Rosemary Brookman who has also celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary. Best wishes to everyone with birthdays and special occasions. We still cannot speculate how soon we will be able to meet up, but we look forward to it with great anticipation. If anyone feels like a chat or if we can help in any way that is legal, please ring one of the committee members, Bobbie on 890520, Jackie on 891399 or Janet on 890197. By keeping ourselves safe we keep others safe, so we can get back to normal (What is normal?) soon. Happy St. David’s Day to everyone and let’s wear our daffodils or leeks even if we are at home. Here's Shelley's update: I’d like to update you on how the hospice refurbishment has been going and also ask for your help. As you know since January 2020, the hospice has been undergoing a vital refurbishment. Despite some delays due to various lockdowns, work has continued and is due to complete by the beginning of March. However, as you know, our fundraising activities have taken a huge hit and sadly we are still short of £170,000 from our £1m target. But we’re really proud that we, with the help of our truly wonderful supporters such as you, have still managed to raise this much - so we are going out to the public over the next few weeks with an urgent fundraising appeal to help us cross that finish line and the renovations, ready to welcome families back when it is safe to do so. The fundraising ‘Fit for Future Refurbishment Appeal’ has been launched and we’d really appreciate it if you could support us in any way and help spread the word about the Appeal by sharing it with your networks, encouraging others to fundraise for us (ideas on the Appeal webpage) and sharing our posts on your social media pages. Here is the Appeal page on our website https://www.tyhafan.org/fitforfuture/refurbishment-appeal/ with some great ideas of how supporters can help us reach that £1m target. As we continue with this lockdown, I will ensure to keep you up to date with what is happening at Tŷ Hafan and stories from the families. I apologise if you have received less news from us these past few months as we continue to adapt to the changing situation You are our local heroes and without you Tŷ Hafan wouldn’t be here and in the position to help so many vulnerable families across Wales. THANK YOU! Take Care and stay safe, Shelley If you don't have online facilities, I'd be happy to collect any money you would care to donate to Tŷ Hafan and I can pass it to Shelley, who lives nearby. The idea was triggered off by the Borough Council's Industries Committee and the signs were installed on all leading into the town. The Borough's crest, viz a black cat, is displayed at the centre of the signpost with the words 'Welcome to Kidwelly, founded 1115' inserted underneath.

Newyddion St Teilo News Well another month, lockdown still with us but, there is a glimmer that there will be light thanks to the stringent rules. Undoubtedly, it has been a hard month for almost everyone. The elderly not having family and friends visit and unable to leave their homes; parents home schooling and looking after their families whilst having to themselves work from home; families unable to visit their sick in hospital; celebrations cancelled; unable to attend funerals to pay respect -- the list is endless and not helped by the dark nights and dire weather. But do we appreciate what we do have ? A beautiful countryside, telephones, televisions, radios, plenty of food ( which we can even have delivered to our doors ), heat and light -- what are we really going without.! Let us be be thankful for all the good things we have and spare a thought for those who haven't, and a kind word to those amongst us who are sad or lonely or unwell. Belated greetings to Mark Hughes who celebrated a big birthday at the end of January. Mark is a popular chap in our community and everyone would like to wish you all the very best of health and happiness. Get well wishes. I have been asked to wish Emma Wheeler-Jones ( Reeve), all the very best as she recovers from Neuro-surgery at the Heath hospital, Cardiff. Emma in turn would like to thank so many for their messages and tokens of support, everyone's kindness is much appreciated. Diolch yn fawr yn dod wrth Annwen Davies , Gelliwerdd. Annwen would like to thank everyone for the birthday greetings and gifts ,and to the family for making her day so lovely. Annwen, along with teulu Gelliwerdd, hopes that her young niece, Nansi, also has a special day on the 7th March when she celebrates her first birthday. Joia dy benblwydd Nansifach,a ni'n edrych 'mlan i weld ti yn Sant Teilo phan ddaw yr amser clo i ben. Sympathy is extended to the family of Tony Harries, Bryn Hefin, who passed away in February. We remember his wife Ray and son Adrian and family in our prayers, along with his extended family. The village was also very saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Aneurin Gravell, who until a couple of years ago lived at Heol . From Pinged, Aneurin was married to Katherine from and they led a full and active life in our communities. Aneurin was a staunch supporter of our Clwb Rygbi and Kath a faithful supporter of Ysgol Mynyddygarreg and the PTFA where their children Ellie and Carwyn attended. The sincere condolences of everyone in our communities go to Aneurin's loving family and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers. Eglwys Sant Teilo has been closed this year to date but, we hope to celebrate the Easter Eucharist on the 4th April. Reader will be Mrs Christine Evans and

DR. guiding the Welsh through turbulent times On 1st March Wales celebrates its patron saint, David – or, in Welsh, Dewi or Dafydd. He is revered wherever Welsh people have settled. As with most figures from the so- called ’Dark Ages’ (he lived in the sixth century), reliable details about his life are scarce, but there are enough for us to form a picture of a formidably austere, disciplined and charismatic leader, who led the Church in Wales through turbulent years and fought tenaciously for the faith. It’s likely that David was strengthened in his ministry by time spent in Ireland, where the Church was stronger and more confident. Early records tell of a meeting of Irish church leaders with three ‘Britons’, as they were described, among them ‘bishop David’. His mother, Non, is also celebrated as a saint in Wales, where a number of churches are dedicated in her name. That he founded a monastery at Menevia, in Pembrokeshire, seems beyond doubt. It later became the site of St David’s cathedral and the settlement which is now the smallest city in the . From Menevia David embarked on preaching and teaching missions across Wales, and probably beyond. His eloquence was legendary. At a famous Synod of the Church, held at a Carmarthenshire village called Brefi, he preached passionately against the Arian heresy – indeed, so passionately that he was (according to some accounts) immediately named as archbishop of Wales. The village is now known as Llandewi Brefi – brefi in Welsh is a hillock, and legend claims that it appeared miraculously in order to provide the eloquent bishop with a pulpit. His monks avoided wine and beer, drinking only water. Indeed, he and they lived lives of rigorous austerity and constant prayer, in the manner of the Desert Fathers of the Eastern Church. The date of David’s death is disputed – either 589 or 601. It wasn’t until the 12th century that he was generally accepted as the patron saint of Wales, and pilgrimages to St David’s were highly regarded in the following centuries – including two made by English kings, William I and Henry II.
