2021 University of Colorado Sustainability Report University of Colorado Sustainability Report Letter from President Kennedy Having grown up amid Minnesota’s magnificent lakes and now living with a view of Colorado’s majestic mountains, I’ve had the good fortune to experience some of this nation’s most beautiful regions. Anyone who has had similar opportunities understands the importance of paying them forward by preserving the beauty and integrity of our lands. At the University of Colorado, we believe this is our collective responsibility, and it’s one we take to heart as this Sustainability Report helps illustrate. CU has a longstanding commitment to fostering sustainability system- wide as well as leading the state in such efforts. More than a decade ago, the CU Board of Regents passed a Sustainability Resolution directing the university president and chancellors to incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards in construction projects wherever possible; develop comprehensive plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and incorporate the mandates of the Governor’s Climate Action Plan into each campus’ efforts to attain climate neutrality. As this report outlines, we continue to surpass these goals, but we I APPLAUD THE cannot afford to become complacent. Recognizing this, we doubled COLLECTIVE down on our commitment to fostering sustainability by making it a COMMITMENT OF significant component of our 2021 strategic plan and creating goals “ to be achieved by 2026 including further reducing our greenhouse gas THE REGENTS, emissions by 15 percent from 2019 emission levels as well as energy CAMPUSES consumption in campus buildings by up to 10 percent from 2019 AND SYSTEM levels.

Football was a big event in Salida during these early years. In 1909 the school paper, the Tenderfoot, reported, “The town was football mad on Saturday afternoon when the Salida High School football team lined up against a strong aggregation of University and Denver High School men, representing the Barnes’ Commercial School of Denver. The game was played November 6, 1909. The final score was 0 - 0.” Another published report read, “The final score was 0 - 0, in favor of Salida.” The report indicated that most of the game was played in Denver’s territory. The article went on to describe how Salida played “old style” football and Denver played “new style” football depending mostly on the forward pass. Prior to 1910, Salida home games were played on dirt fields located where the current Andreas Field House is now. Early athletes traveled by train to the San Luis Valley, Gunnison, Leadville and to other towns on the eastern slope.

1 The Colorado Chapter 2014-15 Tonight, the Colorado Chapter celebrates its 22nd class of outstanding high school scholar-athletes and over two decades of service to amateur football in the state of Colorado. The Colorado Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame was charted on July 1, 1992, and is one of 120 chapters in 47 states that make up the organization. Its members include former players, coaches, athletics administrators, educators, officials, news media and football fans, all of who enjoy the game of football and share in its purposes and goals. One of its primary goals is to recognize and honor the top high school football student-athletes in the state – young men who have distinguished themselves on the field, in the classroom and in extracurricular and community activities where leadership abilities are displayed. The 22nd annual awards banquet recognizes the top 12 student-athletes chosen from a field of statewide nominees and selected by an impartial committee of six persons with diverse backgrounds. The criteria for selection are based on a combination of athletic ability (40 percent), academic achievement and character (40 percent) and citizenship and service (20 percent). It is also the only chapter nationwide that selects collegiate players of the week and a collegiate All-State team, with 2014 marking the 12th straight year of such recognition which began for the 2003 season. And beginning with the 2014 season, the chapter is recognizing an Academic All-Colorado team comprised of the 10 football-playing colleges and universities in the state, as well as selecting a Student-Athlete of the Year (based upon academic and athletic excellence).
