1 The Colorado Chapter 2014-15

Tonight, the Colorado Chapter celebrates its 22nd class of outstanding high school scholar-athletes and over two decades of service to amateur football in the state of Colorado. The Colorado Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame was charted on July 1, 1992, and is one of 120 chapters in 47 states that make up the organization. Its members include former players, coaches, athletics administrators, educators, officials, news media and football fans, all of who enjoy the game of football and share in its purposes and goals. One of its primary goals is to recognize and honor the top high school football student-athletes in the state – young men who have distinguished themselves on the field, in the classroom and in extracurricular and community activities where leadership abilities are displayed. The 22nd annual awards banquet recognizes the top 12 student-athletes chosen from a field of statewide nominees and selected by an impartial committee of six persons with diverse backgrounds. The criteria for selection are based on a combination of athletic ability (40 percent), academic achievement and character (40 percent) and citizenship and service (20 percent). It is also the only chapter nationwide that selects collegiate players of the week and a collegiate All-State team, with 2014 marking the 12th straight year of such recognition which began for the 2003 season. And beginning with the 2014 season, the chapter is recognizing an Academic All-Colorado team comprised of the 10 football-playing colleges and universities in the state, as well as selecting a Student-Athlete of the Year (based upon academic and athletic excellence).

7 2014 Scholar-Athletes

Adam Brown, Air Academy A prolific two-sport athlete, Adam set numerous passing records as a senior for Air Academy under coach Mike Roof. He completed 260-of-473 passes for 3,656 yards and 37 touchdowns, throwing for over 300 yards on eight occasions (out of 10 games). But one game stands out in particular, as he set the state’s record for the most passing yards in a game: in a wild 68-62 loss to Sand Creek, he completed 35-of-54 passes for 589 yards and seven touchdowns (with just one ). He threw for 5,050 yards and 44 touchdowns in his career, playing only a half season at his sophomore and junior years; he still finished his prep days as the state’s fifth all-time leader passer. As a guard on Air Academy’s 4A state champion basketball team, he averaged 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He owns a 3.9 grade point average and is undecided on his college choice.

Austin Conway, Overland One of the top two-sport student-athletes in the state, the Denver Post selected him to its All-Colorado team as an “athlete.” That made sense as he gained yards via rushing (864), punt return (76), kickoff return (50) and even receiving (4), or 994 yards overall; but he was Overland’s starting quarterback, completing 65 percent of his passes (152-of-233) for 1,637 yards and 16 touchdowns. He thus accounted for 2,501 yards of total offense for Seth Replogle’s Trailblazers his senior year, and 7,764 in his career, as he rushed for over 1,000 yards each of his sophomore and junior seasons. While he scored 43 touchdowns on the gridiron, he averaged 10.9 points per game (along with 4.3 assists and 1.4 steals) for the 23-5 OHS squad, which captured the Colorado 5A state title. The owner of a 4.1 grade point average, Austin will attend the University of Wyoming this fall, where he signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Cowboys.

Dylan Draper, Discovery Canyon He earned 3A all-state honors and the Southern League defensive player of the year as a senior, when he was among the state’s leaders in tackles. In 13 games at linebacker, he recorded 167 tackles (115 solo), with 31 for losses including 17 quarterback sacks. But that wasn’t all; he also had 21 hurries, 18 passes broken up, five forced , four recoveries, four (returning one for a touchdown) and four blocked punts. He also caught 15 passes for 367 yards and two TDs on offense playing tight end. A three-year starter, he had 335 career tackles, 61 of which were for losses and 30 sacks, along with 36 hurries, 26 PBU’s, nine forced fumbles and seven interceptions. Discovery Canyon was 12-1 his senior year under coach Shawn Mitchell, reaching the 3A state semifinal and winning the Southern League title; DCHS was the South Central League champ his sophomore and junior years and was 13-0 in league play his final three years there. Off the field, he is completing his requirements to become an Eagle Scout, and he has been very active in community service, participating in dozens of projects from landscaping elementary schools to local food drives. An Honor Roll student all four years in high school, he owns a 3.65 grade point average in high school (all but one term over 3.43, the other a 3.29) and will enroll this summer at the United States Air Force Academy.

8 2014 Scholar-Athletes

He averaged 7.9 yards per rush, with six 100-yard games, and had the play all running backs dream about: against Lakewood, he scored on a 99-yard run; he also had long runs in other games that covered 91, 88 and 76 yards. He ran for 2,155 yards and 22 touchdowns in his career, while posting 296 tackles from his linebacker position. Parker Hammond, Pine Creek One of the top offensive linemen in the state, he played a significant role in Pine Creek’s run for back-to-back state 4A titles his junior and senior seasons; under coach Todd Miller, PHS won the last 25 games of his prep career. In earning 4A all-state honors as a senior, he helped an explosive PCHS offense average 40.7 points and 422 yards per game on offense, with 293 of those coming on the ground (Pine Creek backs had 16 100- yard rushing games and scored 53 touchdowns, many of those where they followed Hammond into the end zone). 16 2014 CC/NFF Special Awards

Keith Jensen & Barbara Lucey Joe Kearney Service Award (contributions to the sport of football) Keith Jensen first became involved with the Colorado Chapter of The National Football Foundation as Athletics Director at Jefferson High School, when he was presented with the opportunity to bring the Play It Smart program to the school. It was one of 12 programs offered nationwide in the initial roll out by the National Football Foundation. After retiring from Jefferson County Schools in 2003, the Colorado Chapter was in need of an Executive Director, and Keith stepped up. With the assistance of his wife, Barbara Lucey, they directed the Colorado Chapter for the next 10 years. With the downturn of the economy, sponsorships didn’t renew, and it was difficult financially, but they kept the program afloat and were able to organize an annual banquet to honor some of Colorado’s top scholar athletes during those 10 years. Now retired in the Tucson area, they remain members of the Chapter they nurtured as their hearts are still in Colorado. Mike Contreraz John Adams Officiating Award (overall contributions to the officiating profession) A native of Northern Colorado, Mike Contreraz graduated from Windsor High School, and served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1978. Mike began officiating in 1970 and continued to do so while in the military, officiating American high school football and the United States Air Force Football League while serving in Nuernburg, Germany. In 1978, Mike began officiating high school football in Colorado, and was selected to work five state championship as well as numerous playoff games. His first two state title games were officiated one week apart in the 1987 postseason. Mike officiated NCAA Division II football for 12 years from 1991 to 2003 in the North Central Conference and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, working four first round playoff games. He will begin his 13th season in NCAA Division I football this coming fall, as he was hired by the in 2003 and has also officiated in the Big 12 and Southland conferences. He has officiated in the 2006 Cotton Bowl and the 2011 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl during his career as well. Along with mentoring young officials in the Denver area, later this spring will be the second year Mike will be a Football Official Mentor at the Stars & Stripes Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah (May 14-17). Mike, and his wife of 34 years, Helen, have four children Remmy, Cheri (Ron), Andres, Michael (Amanda), and have been blessed with eight grandchildren. Mike was a Wholesale Markets Billing Analyst with Qwest Communications, and both he and Helen are both retirees of Qwest after 31 years each of enjoyable employment. Dave Logan Jim Turner Award (service to Colorado youth football) This year’s selection for the Jim Turner Award was an easy if not overdue choice, as Dave Logan has been a name synonymous with success since his days as a three-sport star at Wheat Ridge High School. Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1972, he opted to attend the University of Colorado, where he was the last true major two-sport performer (earning eight letters in football and basketball). An All-American receiver for the Buffaloes, he was a third round selection by Cleveland in the 1976 NFL Draft and a ninth round pick by the Kansas City Kings in the ’76 NBA Draft; he opted for the gridiron. In 119 games in the pros, he caught 263 passes for 4,250 yards and 24 touchdowns, averaging a healthy 16.2 yards per reception. After a stellar 8-year career with the Browns, in 1984 he returned to Colorado and Denver where he finished his NFL career with his hometown Broncos. Since his retirement from the game, he entered the broadcasting business, practically pioneering sports talk in Denver, handling color analyst duties first on television for CU football games and then for KOA for the Broncos. He took over the role of play-by-play for the Broncos in 1997, as has been the voice of the team since. Along the way, he also engaged his other passion – coaching youth – and soon emerged as one of the most successful high school coaches in the country, the only one to win state championships at four different schools (Arvada West, Chatfield, Mullen and most recently, Cherry Creek), winning seven titles in all. A three-time sportscaster of the year in Colorado, along with Dave Winfield, he is the only athlete to be drafted by three different professional sports leagues; he has been inducted into four sport Hall of Fames: Colorado, University of Colorado Athletic, CHSAA and Jefferson County Athletics. And as if he didn’t already have enough to do, in 2009, he launched TeamDaveLogan.com, a web-based consumer referral network of home improvement providers. Sarah Meier Colorado Chapter Award (service on behalf of the Colorado NFF chapter) Sarah Meier is completing her second year of her second stint as the sports information director at Fort Lewis College, but she just finished her 12th year of serving as the media coordinator for the Colorado Chapter/NFF collegiate player-of-the-week and All-Colorado football team programs. She has handled that chore on the side of her full-time positions at FLC and as an associate commissioner for media relations with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The compilation of both can be quite laborious, yet she has worked diligently to help the chapter and the student-athletes from the 10 Colorado colleges gain increased exposure. Among the recognitions she's received for her work are the College Sports Information Directors of America Rising Star Award and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators Judith M. Sweet Commitment Award. Sarah is a graduate of St. Cloud State University, is married (Nathan) and is the mother of three children: Luke, Hannah and Matthew.
