Offense switches to Georgia Tech flexbone formation Paul Johnson has built his career as a successful offensive coach while remaining one of the few coaches to rely on the flexbone triple option. Johnson, a former Navy assistant, first became a head coach at Georgia Southern. Johnson then returned to Navy and most recently to Georgia Tech, where he’s been the head coach since 2008, making the Orange Bowl two times. This past offseason, the Rebels coaching staff adopted Johnson’s flexbone as the team’s main offensive identity, switching from a mostly I-formation and single-back attack. Wider has been tabbed as the team’s main trigger-man in the flexbone, while fellow senior Kyle Adams also is expected to take snaps. The 1999 graduate of Pineville High School has returned to his alma mater as the Rebels’ defensive coordinator after spending the past five seasons as an assistant at Breaux Bridge.
