AU that was necessary at the time of his death was to mount the photographs and complete the editorial work of pulling the book together for publication. The third volume contains additional data for many makes and models for which data on other specimens were given in Volume I. Also, much previously unavailable data on rifles is presented along with data for many handguns not before encountered . Photographs of many previously unphotographed handguns have been included as well as photographs of guns in partially disassembled condition giving a better view of their constructi on and operation. In PART I of Volume Ill , tables are prese nted on rifling characteristics of automatic pistols, revolvers and nonautomatic pistols and rifles. As an aid to identification, material has been organized into tables, arranged by caliber, number of grooves and directi on of twist. Since, as the author pointed out, the firearms examiner may often be concerned with arms of older vintage , there is an extensive discussion in PART II of less well known American made hand guns fr om the peri od 1850 to 19 10. In Section 1 o f PART III are found original pho tographs of automatic pistols, arranged by caliber. -

The Firearms and Gun Safe of Ernest Hemingway
The Firearms and Gun Safe of Ernest Hemingway championsafe.com /firearms-gun-safe-ernest-hemingway/ While most people know Ernest Hemingway for his landmark works of the 20 th century, such as The Old Man and the Sea and A Farewell to Arms , he had a wide variety of interests that he liked to share with his friends. One of his friends, A.E. Hotchner, described a picture that he and Ernest Hemingway took back when they were children. This picture showed Ernest carrying a rifle at around five or six years of age. In fact, Hemingway’s mother stated that his father taught Ernest how to shoot around age two and could capably handle a pistol at age four. This unique and lesser-known passion has carried over into the industry today. Hemingway’s Firearms Passion Because Hemingway was so passionate about firearms from a young age, this passion spilled over into his writing. During his high school years, he was a member of the firearms club with his classmates. When he turned 18, he joined the military and served his country. While he wasn’t overseas, he hunted a variety of animals such as bears, deer, and elk on the American frontier. He also traveled on a variety of safaris, well-represented in his work. He worked hard to maintain his skills with firearms until the day he died. The Chronicles of War Hemingway served his country during World War I and worked as a reporter during World War II. This, combined with the passions described above, obviously meant that Hemingway led an action-packed life. -

I could see the muzzles of the professional's double rifle coming up, and said "I've got him" and fired the third shot. As I recovered from the recoil and aimed again, the Cape Buffalo was falling head over heels into the long grass. This was the trip of a lifetime, and I had just shot my first Cape Buffalo with my English Double Rifle,' a Hellis 450/400-31/4" nitro express. The English Double Rifle is one of the guns that when you see one, conjures up images of Africa and dan- gerous game. There is a romance associated with the Double Rifle of the "Great White Hunter" saving his client's life with a well-placed shot at a matter of feet. their trips and experiences. It is from these accounts that The English Double Rifle has spanned the last one we see the need of the hunter for fast, reliable firearms hundred and fifty years and has evolved from the percus- capable of stopping big and dangerous game animals. -

Twilight 2000
TWILIGHT 2000 Twilight 2000 is a Role playing game set in a fictional future, one where World war 3 began in the late 1990's and eventually slipped into a nuclear exchange changing society as we know it. The players assume the roles of survivors trying to live through the aftermath of the war. Twilight 2000 was published in the mid 1980's by Game Designers Workshop who unfortunately closed their doors in the early 1990's. The copyright was purchased by Tantalus, Inc but there are no stated plans to revive the game. Despite the lack of any new material from a publisher the game continues to expand through the players on websites such as this. This is my contribution to the game, this site will be in a constant state of change, I plan to add material as I get it finished. This will include new equipment, optional rules, alternate game backgrounds and other material as it accumulates, currently I am working on source material for a World war 2 background, but I also have been completing some optional rules of my own as well as modern equipment. For other perspectives on Twilight 2000 visit the links listed at the bottom of this page. Gutta-Percha, Hard Rubber and Synthetics in Firearms
Hardman.qxd 1/10/08 9:35 AM Page 15 Gutta-Percha, Hard Rubber and Synthetics in Firearms James (Jim) Hardman The town of Dorset, Vermont is a quiet place, but we do host an antique show that sets up on the village green every other year. A couple of years ago, I saw a fine little parts cabinet for sale. “Those knobs are gutta-percha,” the dealer said. “How do you know that?” I asked. I guess I pinched his ulcer because he glowered at me and said “I’m a professional . and I know these things!” Well, they are not gutta-percha, but the name gutta-per- cha seems to resonate with antique dealers. Some antique dealers will also tell you that civil war “Union” picture cases were made of gutta-percha. (Figure 1) Some were, but for the most part, these cases were molded of “Mud”—in this case, a mix of natural resins including shellac and blended with pigments and wood flour.
