MONDAY, APRIL 26, 2021 CADDO RIVER OUT OF DERBY 31 SHADES (& COUNTING) Shortleaf Stable's 'TDN Rising Star' Caddo River (Hard Spun) OF DERBY GRAY will not make the line-up for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby after spiking a fever over the weekend. AWe noticed he was off his feed and took his temperature yesterday afternoon. It was slightly elevated,@ trainer Brad Cox said. AIt=s just really bad timing being this close to the Derby. We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can=t run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.@ The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well. After sending his Derby quartet out to jog Sunday morning, trainer Todd Pletcher announced a Derby rider for Sainthood Giacomo | Horsephotos (Mshawish). Cont. p6 The Week in Review, by T.D. Old Friends A P Valentine 1998 b H A. P Indy – Twenty Eight Carat (Alydar) On February 14, 1998, Alydar’s daughter Twenty Eight Carat delivered a special valentine, a handsome bay son by A. P. Indy. He was raced by former University of Kentucky Wildcats coach Rick Pitino’s Ol’ Memorial Stable (then called Celtic Pride Stable), and it’s not hard to guess why they named him A P Valentine. A grandson of Seattle Slew and great-grandson of Secretariat, he raced from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. At two he won the 2000 Champagne Stakes. At three he was a favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and in both the 2001 Preakness and Belmont Stakes he finished second to Point Given. Eventually retired with $864,170 earnings, he began an enthusiastically heralded breeding career at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, but—ironically for a horse named Valentine—he proved infertile. Reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy restored a measure of fertility and at Watercress Farm in Kentucky, then Cedar Creek Farm in Texas, A P Valentine sired 28 registered foals. 21 of them became racehorses, and two, A P Valor and Ifonlyjohnny, earned more than $100,000 apiece. Many thanks to Dr. William Day, veterinarian and owner of Cedar Creek Farm, for A P Valentine’s retirement to Old Friends. If you would like a share in this horse, you may complete the form below. In return, you will receive an 8 ½ x 11 color photograph of A P Valentine and a Share Certificate. Mail bottom of form and _________________________ check to: Name I would like ______share(s) _________________________ in A P Valentine @ $100 per Old Friends Address share.

NOT THIS TIME The most brilliant two-year-old son of sire of sires, Giant’s Causeway, Not This Time was also arguably the fastest and most spectacular two-year-old of his crop. In addition to being by Storm Cat’s leading sire son, he is out of record-breaking graded and multiple stakes winning Miss Macy Sue – also dam of brilliant Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. I) victor Liam’s Map – and descends from Ta Wee, a two-time Champion Sprinter who is half-sister to the legendary Dr. Fager. Giant’s Causeway has demonstrated an affinity for the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, and Fappiano is particularly interesting here, as he is out of a mare by Dr. Fager, which should work extremely well with remarkable strong Tartan Farm/Genter heritage in the dam of Not This Time (which includes inbreeding to Dr. Fager’s brilliant half-sister, Ta Wee). We can note that Unbridled’s Song – a grandson of Fappiano – is the sire of Not This Time’s brilliant half-brother Liam’s Map.

STALLION POWER Caption for photo goes here 44 WINTER 2018 K KEENELAND.COM STALLION POWER For nearly four decades Lane’s End Farm has set the standard as one of the world’s major stallion operations BY MARYJEAN WALL PHOTOS BY DAVID COYLE KEENELAND.COM K WINTER 2018 45 n 1866 an English horse named Leamington stood at stud for one season only in Woodford County, on land known in modern times as Lane’s End Farm. Leam- ington accomplished a lot in that single year — com- mencing a stallion narrative that continues more than a century Ilater for William Stamps Farish III, founder of Lane’s End. The land was called Bosque Bonita when Confederate Brigadier General Abraham Buford returned home from the Civil War. Buford had greater success with Leamington than he did fighting to save Paducah, Kentucky, from falling to the United States. Buford, a sharp horseman who had built his own racetrack on Bosque Bo- nita, saw opportunity in Leamington. The horse had failed at stud in England, but this was Ken- tucky, ruined economically in the war. Few stal- lions remained after outlaws and armies from both sides had emptied nearly every horse barn in the state. Buford offered a stall to Leamington (he did not own him) and sent word to anyone who had managed to hang on to at least some mares. Leamington got down to work. In that one year he sired the inaugural Kentucky Derby winner, Aristides. He also sired that pride of Kentucky and most popular racehorse of the 1870s, Long- Founded by Will Farish, right, Lane’s End continues to thrive in the second generation, with Bill Farish, left, serving as second in command.
