King Henry VIII School is nationally renowned for its sporting achievement, with international, national and county representatives in several sports across the school age range. For all boys and girls within the school there is a wealth of sporting activities, including rugby, hockey, cricket and netball. Volleyball, athletics, gymnastics, tennis, squash, badminton, orienteering, health-related fitness, step-aerobics and rounders all mean the school is able to provide something to suit all aptitudes and preferences. As well as fantastic on-site facilities, recent teams have enjoyed tours to France, , Sri Lanka, Malaysia and South Africa. Competing for the school offers a high level of skilled, competitive game time, and the also allows for enthusiasts to compete at a more accessible, but equally competitive level. Our Outdoor Education Programme engages with pupils in all year groups, whether it be through the Year 7 Bush Tucker Challenge Trip, the Year 9 Sandstone Trail Expedition, or any of the Duke of Edinburgh awards which we offer.

Coventry is the UK’s European City of Sport for 2019! The year coincides with Coventry and Warwickshire’s Year of Wellbeing, and as a city we are encouraging people to get more active and enjoy sport. The 48th annual King Henry’s Relay Race is a great event at which to welcome spectators and supporters to the War Memorial Park to cheer on our teams!

This year’s Relay is just one of a programme of events to help promote positive physical and mental wellbeing as well as celebrate everything from professional sport to parkruns and Sunday league matches. Other exciting developments for the year include a range of improved leisure facilities across Coventry, such as the Alan Higgs 50m pool and new Wave Waterpark, both opening later in 2019.

Take a look at the city’s website for a regularly updated list of events, developments and more information: www.coventry.gov.uk/cityofsport 2018 KHVIII Relay Race

King Henry VIII School extend a very warm welcome to all of the teams. We have 60 Boys teams and 40 Girls teams coming this year—a huge increase on girls’ teams in particular. We are really pleased to see a continual increase in the number of schools and teams attending the race, and we’re looking forward to seeing the quality of the all the new competitors here today. Coventry is delighted to be the European City of Sport for 2019, and our 48th Boys Race and 20th Girls Race are both brilliant examples of the inclusivity, determination and enjoyment in sport that we’re celebrating across the city this year. We wish the very best of luck to all of the runners today; we’re hoping to see some great effort and teamwork from everyone.

We are very pleased to welcome for the first time Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College, Magdalen College School, RGS Guildford, Stroud High School, and Truro School. We also welcome back Bloxham School, who last attended in 1998!

What follows is a rough guide to the teams and individuals whom we think will do well in the race today. This is based on information sent by schools, previous form at this Relay, and other events which have taken place earlier on in the XC season. We note that increasingly, Relay competitors have profiles on the Power of 10 website—it’s wonderful to see athletes of exceptional calibre racing here, in teams from all over the country. As ever, be warned—relays always throw up a few surprises: the complexity of choosing the best order for runners in each team is just one factor to consider. Whilst every effort has been made to get our facts right, any errors are on the part of the programme compilers!

Vest identification numbers 01-60 (boys) and 101-140 (girls) are shown in parentheses after the school’s name below. The identification will also show the actual lap for each runner. All spectators are welcome to come to the school hall after the race for the presentations.

BOYS

ABINGDON [01] This year’s team is a young one, but with plenty of talent, so hopefully we’ll see them at the Relay for many years to come: Johnny James (Yr 9), Will d'Arcy (Yr 9) and Rowan Miell-Ingram (Yr 10) were all part of the Intermediate Boys team finishing 7th at the English Schools XC Cup Final; Will placed 13th individually. An older member of this year’s Relay team, David Bunn (Yr13), has represented GB in Orienteering.

BRIGHTON HOVE AND SUSSEX SIXTH FORM COLLEGE [05] Attending the Relay for the first time this year, BHASVIC are having a good season, with a strong team and some outstanding individual runners. Toma Tarragano was first individual boy at the Knole Run, closely followed by team mate, Tom Eames coming in at forth. The team earned an impressive fifth place overall, and we look forward to seeing what they can do here today.

CALDAY GRANGE [07] Returning after a hiatus of a few years, Calday bring with them this time Daniel Hayes, who participated in the Merseyside XC race and was well placed, and Will Wright who had similar success in Cheshire. This year Calday had two teams reach the English Schools XC finals in Suffolk, their Intermediate team placing fourth and Juniors 16th. One of our former guest speakers at the Relay, parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt, would be pleased to hear that Calday have established a school Grand Prix challenge, visiting local parkruns including Birkenhead, Chester, and Ellesmere Port, among others, with several trips planned for future months!

ERMYSTED’S [09] Last year’s runners up, Ermysted bring with them this year a talented group of Yr11 runners who won the ESCC Cup as Yr10s at Sevenoaks in 2017, and placed second in this season’s English Schools’ Fell Championships back in September. Joe Hudson (Yr13) who was sub-12 minute here last year - represented England at U18 Fell-running this year, and was a Bronze medallist in the recent Junior Men’s Yorkshire XC Championships. Alex Thompson (Yr10) won the final of the Inters ESCC Cup this season at Woodbridge, and recently won the U15s Yorkshire County XC Championship.

GIGGLESWICK SCHOOL [11] Giggleswick’s Euan Brennan has been at the sharp end of the U20 running scene this year, competing for both Great Britain and England in the Mountain and XC running teams; Euan ran the joint second fastest time at the Relay last year, so we are eagerly watching to see what he might do on the back of a great season. Tom Humphries (Yr13) has also represented England on the Fells. Fell running is close to Giggleswick’s heart; the school will again host the English Schools Fell Running Championships this year, on Sunday 6th October 2019.

HABERDASHERS’ ADAMS [12] Winners of Most Improved Cup last year, Haberdasher’s bring two teams to the Relay in 2019, returning with Connor Bentley, who took joint first place last year alongside the formidable Ricky Lutakome. Connor runs for the City of Stoke, and in the British Junior Triathlon Team; he is the current Schools XC Champion, and came first in the 2018 Loutraki ETU Triathlon Youth European Championships Festival. His middle-distance times are impressive (1500 PB 3:45.65; 3000m PB 8:24.91 June 2018), and it will be exciting to see what he can produce at the Relay over the 2.3 mile course.

THE JUDD [17] Winning once again last year, and consistent top performers at the Relay, taking Gold, Silver or Bronze here for over a decade, the Judd really are the ones to beat in this race. This year’s team are once again on top form, and unbeaten so far this season: Kings Trophy winners once again, taking the Haskell Cup, the Judge Cup, and Gold once again at the Knole Run. James Kingston (who placed 10th individually at the Relay last year) returns along with Dan Schofield (joint 11th individually last year), who placed fifth at the Knole and second in the Kings Trophy individually. Adam van der Plas, who placed 6th individually at the Knole, also returns to the Relay as another strong member of an outstanding team.

KING HENRY VIII [19] George Gawthorpe and Tom Miles are expected to be our fastest finishers in the KHVIII Boys A team, but Ned Gilford, new to the team this year, has demonstrated a particularly high level of commitment to training and is definitely one to watch. The Relay has a strong legacy, both for visiting teams and our own homegrown talent—and we realised this year that Tom, one of the younger but extremely promising members of this year’s team is the nephew of Steve Miles, of KHVIII’s 1985 winning Relay squad! As ever, thanks to all of our runners for their help with organising the Relay.

LOUGHBOROUGH GS [22] Last year’s sixth place winners, Loughborough return in 2019 with Dan Maud, having represented the Midlands at the National Youth Games last summer. James Wardle is another one to watch, coming fourth in the Junior Boys 1500 m at the English Schools Athletics Championships 2018.

QEGS PENRITH [30] An experienced team of XC winners is this year joined by Relay novices hoping to make their mark. U17's Sam Almond (Cumbria Club Champion) and Robin Regan (Cumbria Schools Champion) are alongside Ben O'Dowd NW Round Schools Cup winner. Joining them is Thomas Renwick, who came 2nd in U13 Northern XC in Pontefract in January, as well as placing 21st in the Schools Cup final.

SIR THOMAS RICH [40] George Hawthorne captains Sir Thomas Rich’s team this year, having competed in every Relay since 2016—although this must be his last, as he is now Yr13. George competes at county and national standard, and we hope that he can have a great race here today for his final Relay.

TRURO SCHOOL [53] Competing for the first time at the Relay, we are delighted to welcome Truro School, and despite their especially long journey here, we’re excited to see what they can bring to the competition. Their team includes Finn Birnie (Yr13), who ran for England in the SIAB International as a Junior Boy in 2014 finishing fourth, and has just been selected to run for England U20 in Belgium next week. Harris Mier (Yr12) ran for England in the SIAB International as a Junior Boy in 2016, taking silver.

WOODBRIDGE [59] Woodbridge return for the second time, once again bringing Nathan Goddard (sub 12 minutes last year), who qualified and competed three years in succession at England Schools Track & Field in both 1500m and 3000m. Nathan also represented East of England for three consecutive years at the London Mini Marathon, and made a top 20 finish at the English National XC as a Junior Boy. Team member Kit Evans Lombe placed 2nd at the ESAA XC Cup National Final (hosted by Woodbridge School) in November 2018 and 16th at the South of England Inter Counties in December 2018. ______GIRLS

BABLAKE [101] Local stalwarts Bablake once again bring captain Emma Allroggen, who last year earned fourth fastest lap at the Relay. Emma has won both the West Midlands Trials and Championships at U16 level this season, and we’re watching to see how she performs here today.

BROMSGROVE [106] After just edging Sedbergh out for fourth place last year, and placing third in 2017, Bromsgrove return again with Natalie Hatfield, who has been having a very strong season. European Champion 2018 Biathle in Germany, qualifying for the World Championships in , competing in Inter XC, the London mini marathon, the elite European Laser Run in Poland in June, and English Schools Athletics 1500m U15, Natalie is on good form and should be one to watch this year.

KING HENRY VIII [108] Sarah Brown is expected to be our fastest girl, but Harriet Garnett (Yr 7) and Victoria McQueen (Yr 8), both of whom are in the B team, have trained very well considering their young ages and are likely to be future A team stars. As ever, thanks to all of our runners for their help with organising the Relay. MILLFIELD SCHOOL [115] Consistent performers always hovering around the top five, Millfield return looking to improve upon Silver at last year’s Relay.

QEGS PENRITH [117] Last year’s 3rd placed Girls A team are all set to return to the Relay this year—Esme Davies (last year’s 2nd fastest lap 13.08, improving on her 2nd fastest lap from 2017, of 13.17!) is hoping to go one place higher this year on the back of an impressive XC season so far. Representing North of England in the Inter districts at Great Stirling XC, Esme came 3rd U20, as well as being Cumbria County Champion for School and Club. Fellow Yr13 Eve Pannone has also had a great running year, having competed in her first international, the Mountain Running Youth Cup in Italy last June, and runner up in the Senior Girls Fell Running Championships.

SEVENOAKS [122] Two consecutive years of taking Gold here at the Relay must mean that Sevenoaks are the team to watch in this race—let’s see if they can make it a hat-trick…

SIR THOMAS RICH [125] A long-standing Relay competitor, we are very pleased to welcome Sir Thomas Rich’s Girls team for the first time this year—a great first on the 20th anniversary of the Girls Race, and we wish them all the best.

STROUD [128] Stroud are making their maiden appearance at the Relay, and we are delighted to welcome them. Their team’s runners include Lydia Attwell, recently 1st in ESAA District School Individuals, 2nd in the Regionals, and 4th in the South West Championships, potentially qualifying for the London Mini Marathon, and Gold at the Midland Road Relays, 2nd in Glos League, with a 1500m PB of 4:56. Annie Testar won Silver in the 800m at the Schools International last July.

WALTHAMSTOW [136] The Walthamstow team field two sisters: Lily Slack (Yr7), who won the Junior Great North Run (U13), and placed 4th at the Knole Run, and Sophie Slack (Yr8), who joined Lily in a three-girl relay team that won the National Road and National XC for U13 Girls.

WOODBRIDGE [138] Woodbridge return after some XC success this season: the Inter Girls made the ESAA XC Cup Final, finishing a credible 13th. Ruby Vinton returns with this year’s team, having won the South of England Inter XC Country two years in succession, and gaining eighth place at the UK Inter Counties U13. Team mate April Hill placed 12th in the 2018 South of England XC Championship, 12th in the Junior Girls at the England Schools XC in 2018 and a finalist in the Junior Girls 1500m at England Schools; April placed fifth at the ESAA XC Cup Final hosted by Woodbridge School in November.

Next years’ race will be on Wednesday 5th February 2020; we hope to see you all again.

VIP Guest: Stephen Murphy

This year’s special guest at the Relay is an esteemed alumnus of the race. Stephen Murphy’s XC career began at St Albans School, where he captained the team which dominated the KHVIII Relay during the late 1990’s. Stephen gained the fastest lap at every school relay in his sixth form years on the domestic circuit, and held numerous course records on school courses—including running the KHVIII fastest lap in 2001, in a time of exactly 11 minutes!

In 2002, Stephen was the fastest non-African- born runner in the world, as an U20 at the 3000m Steeplechase, with a time of 8.47.22; UK Junior and U23 Steeplechase Champion, and British Universities Steeplechase Champion. Stephen was the only British world Junior finalist in the Steeplechase for the last two decades.

Cross country running has always been a major component of Stephen’s life: he competed internationally in every age group from U15 up to Senior Men, winning international honours every year from 1995-2011. He was the Tri-State XC champion in the US (Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland) as part of team that travelled to America (see top photo, aged 23) on tour; and at 15, he finished 20th in the U20 French National Championships. The Irish national club’s XC Champion in 2010, Stephen represented Ireland at the European Cup in 2011

Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Stephen has always been fiercely competitive and a high achiever in athletics… Stephen’s uncle was the former headmaster of St Patrick’s High School in Kenya—widely regarded as the best distance-running school in the world, and a hotbed for Olympic champions—and Stephen spent time living and training in the Kenyan national camp, alongside many Olympic medallists and international athletes.

After leaving St Albans, Stephen attended St Mary’s University in London, well known for its tremendous sporting legacy; Stephen was a lottery-funded athlete, living and training alongside others such as Mo Farah, before taking a sports scholarship to Butler University, Indianapolis.

Now Head of PE and a housemaster at St Columba’s College— always strong contenders in this Relay—Stephen also coaches two international Junior Steeplechasers and national XC Champions, as well as being the Hertfordshire team manager. He keeps his own running going as part of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, and he is father to William (5) and Eleanor (2), and husband to a hugely understanding wife Nicola accepting of his (self-confessed) over competitiveness!

With a long background in XC running throughout his school and university career, and now an experienced coach working with young athletes, we are delighted to welcome Stephen today as our VIP guest, to award the prizes for this year’s KHVIII Relay Race. We may even be able to persuade him to reprise his 2001 11-minute lap!
