  • Travelling in Time to Cape Breton Island in the 1920S: Protest Songs, Murals and Island Identity
Travelling in Time to Cape Breton Island in the 1920s: Protest Songs, Murals and Island Identity Richard MacKinnon and Lachlan MacKinnon Abstract Islands are places that foster a unique sense of place-attachment and com- munity identity among their populations. Scholarship focusing on the dis- tinctive values, attitudes and perspectives of ‘island people’ from around the world reveals the layers of meaning that are attached to island life. Lowenthal writes: ‘Islands are fantasized as antitheses of the all-engrossing gargantuan mainstream-small, quiet, untroubled, remote from the busy, crowded, turbu- lent everyday scene. In reality, most of them are nothing like that. …’1 Islands, for many people, are ‘imagined places’ in our increasingly globalised world; the perceptions of island culture and reality often differ. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, in eastern North America, a locale with a rich history of class struggle surrounding its former coal and steel industries, provides an excellent case study for the ways that local history, collective memory and cultural expression might combine to combat the ‘untroubled fantasy’ that Lowenthal describes. History and methodology Coal mining has been an essential part of Cape Breton Island’s landscape since the early-eighteenth century. A steel mill was constructed in Sydney, the island’s largest city, in 1899; this steel plant provided employment for many of the island’s inhabitants throughout the twentieth century. Grid-patterned streets, dotted with company-owned homes, formed around the industrial workplaces in many Cape Breton communities. It was in these communities, from the people employed in the coal mines and steel mill, that distinctive traditions of work and leisure began to emerge.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

  • Former Aigles Bleus Coach Perron Made His Name in Moncton SEAN HATCHARD TIMES & TRANSCRIPT
27 oct. 2016 – Times & Transcript Former Aigles Bleus coach Perron made his name in Moncton SEAN HATCHARD TIMES & TRANSCRIPT Jean Perron coached the Montreal Canadiens to a Stanley Cup victory in 1986. He paraded down Saint Catherine Street as thousands of Canadiens fans lined the parade route. But it was his 10 seasons as head coach of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus that Perron calls “the best hockey time in my life. There’s no question about that.” In Perron’s tenure guiding the university men’s team, the Aigles Bleus never missed the playoffs. He helped turn them into a national powerhouse, winning back-to-back Canadian championships in 1981 and 1982. They won four Atlantic conference titles, too. Perron, who coached UdeM from 1973 to 1983, will be inducted into the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame as a builder on Saturday at the Capitol Theatre. The 70-year-old is returning to the city for the festivities from his home in Chandler, Que. “I’ll be there like I never left,” he said. “I’m so excited. I’m like a little kid.” Perron has never forgotten the scene in the city when his team arrived home from winning its first national championship in 1981 in Calgary. “Bill Boucher, the director of the alumni association, called me before I left Calgary and said,‘Jean, you won’t believe what is happening here in Moncton. Get ready because you’re going to have the shock of your life,’”Perron said. “We arrived at the airport and there was 5,000 people jam-packed in the small airport, and there was a line of cars from the airport to downtown.
