2016 WOMEN’S SOFTBALL GUIDE 3 2016 Coaches’ Outlook The 2015-2016 school year brought in 11 freshmen to the softball program. These young, talented student-athletes are prepped, ready and gunning to go for a run at the regional championship. Helping lead them will be three strong sophomores, ready, willing and able to improve on last year’s performances. Leading the way last season as our lead-off hitter isAimee Saffo (OF – Howell Central), who led the team in average (.423) and hits (41). Aimee’s already looking strong and we look for her to add to the numbers she put up last year. Her ability to track down a ball in the outfield gap will cut down on extra-base hits and her softball knowledge will help her find success at the plate and on the bases. Another sophomore who saw time as catcher and third baseman last year is Taylor Mayes (C/1B – Wellsville). Taylor has a great knowledge for the other teams’ hitters and what works for our pitchers, which will prove to be invaluable to the success of our pitchers. Rounding out the sophomores is Taylor Huskey (2B – Howell Central). Huskey took one for the team last year and played a position that she wasn’t comfortable playing. We look for her to not have to do that this year and hope that she can do even better at the plate. We are looking for big things from our three freshmen pitchers this season. Maggie Groshong (P – Cape Central) comes to us from the Cape Girardeau area. Maggie has some nasty movement on her pitches that should prove difficult for opposing hitters to hit solid.Avery Dickson (P – Liberty Christian Academy) will be the power in the rotation. Avery is very strong and can blow it by hitters with speed or get them out with her great movement. Avery and Maggie will see the bulk of the time on the mound. Rachel Earlewine (SS/3B/P – Warrenton) will see limited action as a pitcher because her defense will be missed when she’s pitching. As a pitcher, she will be able to provide some rest for the other two pitchers. As an infielder, Rachel will track balls in the holes and be sure-handed no matter what position she plays. Her speed and great bat control will help her do well at the plate. Brianna Schatz (C/OF – Webster Groves) is a very quick left-handed catcher and outfielder. Brianna will use that quickness to either pick-off baserun- ners, take away base hits in the outfield or create some havoc on the bases. Her strong arm will throw out anyone attempting to take an extra base on her. Lindsey Lewis (OF/C – Howell Central) will see time in the outfield and catcher.Tanner Cotner (OF – Warrenton) has battled back from a nasty ankle injury in the fall and will add strength at the plate. Niki Swafford (SS/3B – Fort Zumwalt North) has the ability to play just about any infield position. She gets good reads on balls hit around her, has great hands and a quick release to throw any speedy runners. Niki will provide power and average to the batting order with her ability to hit any type of pitching. Olivia Boyer (3B/1B – Francis Howell) will be a very solid corner infielder. We look for Olivia to add power to the middle of the lineup. Another athletic infielder isKayla Bals (2B/SS – Winfield). Kayla has great speed and athleticism that will allow her to cover a lot of ground and take away “would-be hits” from opposing teams. Her hard work will pay off at the plate when she’s getting on and steal- ing bases. There are two athletes that came to us as walk-ons. Amanda Schnick (OF – Joel E. Ferris High) is very athletic and has the ability to play a few positions. Her speed and willingness to improve will lead her to much success this season. Rounding out the roster is Madison Ponder (1B – Troy Buchanan). Ponder will add occasional power to an already potent lineup. The ability of these girls to play several positions will prove to be invaluable to us as a coaching staff. We will not be afraid to move players around to shake things up. We are excited about the potential of every single one of these young ladies.
