Zones of extreme magnetic variation were recorded by the magnetometer survey, almost certainly reflecting modern activities. Gradiometer survey successfully recorded the detailed layout of part of the Roman town, comprising a complex of linked enclosures or "ladder" settlement with numerous pits and probable burnt features. There was no obvious relationship between the settlement and projected line of the Roman road, suggesting that the road took a different line upon reaching the settlement. Gradiometer and resistance survey in the southern part of the site located a number of potential features associated with the postulated early Christian chapel site. The survey indicated that settlement continued further to the south than previously thought. [Au(adp)]
