The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of Foliejohn Way) Woodlands Park Telephone 01628 822000

Dear Friends, As you may remember, there used to be a long-running series of television adverts, which proclaimed “Happiness is . . .” Many of them were quite entertaining, even for those who were not entirely convinced by the suggested definition (“. . . a cigar called Hamlet”) — and some of the best can still be viewed on YouTube. But how would you complete the sentence “Happiness is . . .”? It turns out that most of us are pretty bad at judging the things which will really make us happy, and I recently came across some fascinating evidence of this. It takes the form of a series of comparisons between people in different situations, with an indication of which are the happier. For example, those who watch less television are apparently happier than those who watch more — although I suppose this may not come as a surprise to any who watched ’s dismal performances in the recent world cup on TV! Perhaps more surprising is the revelation that athletes who win bronze medals are happier than those who win silver. (The same principle probably doesn’t extend as far as getting knocked out before the quarter finals, but it may give some comfort to British tennis fans: perhaps it would have been worse if Andy Murray had made it to the Wimbledon final but then lost.) THIS MAGAZINE Published bi-monthly, six times a year. Delivered free to all homes in , and Woodlands Park. Freely available at church services. Given to all families at White Waltham School. Articles for the next edition should be sent to: [email protected]

by 8th September 2010

The magazines will be available by the last Sunday of the month

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 1 Other comparisons reveal that those who do something well are less happy than those who do something good — even (presumably) if they feel they haven’t managed to do it all that well; that couples who are married are happier than those who simply live together; and that those who take time to pray or meditate are happier than those who don’t. The consistent pattern is that the way of life commended in the Bible tends to make people happier — even when they may have thought otherwise. Of course that makes perfect sense when we remember that Jesus said he had come so that we might enjoy life to the full (John 10:10), and it’s a great encouragement to those who try to live in the way that he taught. But it ought to encourage others to do the same, too. Because it suggests that, even where we might think otherwise, where it might (as we say) be ‘against our better judgement’, happiness really is to be found by living God’s way. And yes, in case you were wondering, the research even shows that those who belong to a church community are happier than those who don’t. Anyone who wants to try that out for themselves can be assured of a warm welcome at any of our services . . . .

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 5 Putting Something Back

This is the second edition of the magazine that I have been responsible for. I have become much more aware after completing this latest edition how much time and effort is required. It made me think about all the people who make sure that this magazine is delivered to every house in the parish. They all do this voluntarily six times a year so I thought it would be nice to say a big Thank You to all of you for giving your time so freely.

Within our church organisation there are many functions and responsibilities carried out Weekly, Monthly, Year after Year all by volunteers. Too many people to name individually, but all very important in ensuring everything runs smoothly.

So often today you find many are all too quick to complain or criticise what others or organisations do without ever being willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved. So let me urge you to put something back and reflect that perhaps we should count our blessings more often and try giving instead of just taking.

Derek R Smith.

The White Waltham Clothes Show 11 October 2010

We are organising an exciting and fun event to raise money for the White Waltham School Building Fund this autumn. We are holding a fashion show (models will be enthusiastic mums, staff and children of all shapes and sizes!) followed by a sale of good quality second-hand clothes and accessories – both designer and High Street.

To make this a success, we would like to ask you to go through your wardrobes (as well as those belonging to your friends and relatives!) and donate to the school good quality unwanted designer and High street label clothes and accessories (belts, shoes, jewellery) and the added bonus is you get the option to earn 50% on your goods that are sold . Please bring your bags of clothes and accessories to the school office clearly labelled (full name, phone number, approx. retail price and the price you would like to sell them for on the designer goods). We will be collecting bags from now on through to beginning of October.

We would also like to invite you to come along to what promises to be a fun evening – bring some friends, (refreshments and a bar will be provided) and snag some bargains.

Tickets will be on sale after the school holidays from the school office. Please call the school on 01628 822533 or Sunitha Province on 07872833779 for more details.

We will endeavour to return the unsold goods in the same condition as we have received them, but due to the fact that this is a public sale and a fundraising event the Clothes Show team cannot take responsibility for any damages.

White Waltham C E Primary School

The summer term is ending in our normal busy fashion. This past term our year 2 children have been at a Modern Foreign Language extravaganza at Cox Green where they sang an African song. All of the children have visited Waltham Place Farm and returned to school full of information and excitement on a variety of topics. Our year 5 and 6 children were able to attend the open day at the Royal Farm which they thoroughly enjoyed. In addition year 6 have been to Longleat, an action packed day, some I heard found the Maze a challenge and needed rescuing.

On the sporting front, of note are the success of the year 3 tennis team who competed at county level. However, all our children have been busy: year 5 and 6 children competed at Charters in a Basketball tournament, year 3 took part in an athletics tournament, year 2 have been playing in a Tag-ruby tournament, year 4 cheerleading and two teams of children from year 3-6 competed in a rounders festival. We also held our own football ‘World Cup’ which was a fantastic day with Paraguay winning.

Our summer fayre took on a relaxed theme, the weather was a bit chilly but everybody worked hard to make it a great success, particular thanks to the PTA. As a result over £3000.00 was raised; this sum will be going towards our new maths scheme and floor robots.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 13 On the staffing front, we say goodbye to our teachers Mrs Hosty and Mrs Price. Miss Aldridge and Miss Smith, two of our TAs are leaving to train as teachers. Mrs Moe is changing her role at school from a TA to a trainee teacher in September and we look forward to supporting her in this endeavour. We are grateful to all of these staff for their commitment and dedication at White Waltham. Mrs Wood is leaving us for a year maternity leave, we wish her and her husband all the best with the arrival of their first child. We would like to congratulate Mr Edwards on successfully completing his GTP and look forward to Mr Edwards joining our staff in September in year 5.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us by attending events or helping out over the past year, and look forward to seeing you again.

May I, as always extend a warm welcome to any visitors. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to call in and see us, or telephone on 01628 822533, or have a look at our website at: www.whitewalthamprimary.co.uk

Our Vision… Our vision is to encourage and support families as they bring their children up in the 21st century by: • equipping them to meet the challenges facing them in today’s modern world. • enabling them to develop self-confidence within the Christian framework that underpins our society. • helping them to make the right decisions as they grow up in today’s world. • providing a point of contact where young families can come when they need support.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 17

Background… St Mary’s White Waltham is a welcoming church with members of all ages from 0 to over 90! Members of our congregation come from all over the Maidenhead area and we reach out into our diverse local communities of White Waltham, Woodlands Park, Littlefield Green and .

Achieving Our Vision… We currently have four Sunday morning groups for our young people. With insufficient accommodation at the church, three of these groups meet in a building over a quarter of a mile from St Mary’s which, because the dangerous winding country road has no pavement for some of the way, requires a car journey. Despite our best efforts, this situation isolates our young families from the rest of our church community. Our plan is to construct purpose-built accommodation for our children’s and young people’s groups adjacent to our church building. Once this new building opens we will be able to welcome our families as we would wish to: as integral members of our church community rather than their being isolated at a distance, as they currently are. It is only by getting to know young families well that they will come to us in times of need for support and reassurance. The new building will give potential for growth, enabling us to provide more opportunities and activities for people in the local community. It will create a learning environment in which, through Christian teaching, young people will be helped to understand how to make the right decisions about their lives. Above all, we want to offer a safe, secure and loving environment in which the children and families in our parish can be supported and nurtured.

The Future… It is important that all children are encouraged to be actively involved and engaged in their local community and environment. Here at St Mary’s, Project Rainbow will continue to reach out and encourage more young people to embrace the Christian values that will help them to become responsible citizens and make a positive contribution to society.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 21 Tales from the Bells

Since the last magazine I was very pleased to have two new recruits contact me with regards to learning to ring. But don’t let that put you off contacting me if you are still interested.

We practise on Friday nights at 7.30pm till 9pm. (at White Waltham on the 2nd , 4 th and 5 th Friday of the month. At Shottesbrooke on the 1 st and 3 rd Friday of the month). Initial training will be given at White Waltham Church. If you’re interested in taking up bell ringing please e-mail me at [email protected] or phone me - my number is at the back of the parish magazine.

We have also had our ringing chamber re-carpeted as the old carpet had been down for quite some time so it was nice to have a change.

During this time of year some of our members are away on holidays and this reduces the amount of ringers there are at practice and Sunday mornings.

My husband and I have just come back from our holidays in Norfolk where we stayed in self catering accommodation. We went out three nights to other bell practices in the area and were made very welcome. We also rang on one Sunday morning.

We went out on The Broads three times. Twice with an independent company who takes people out and is very enthusiastic about the wildlife around. I’d highly recommend them.

The other time we went out was when we hired a self drive boat for four hours. It was lovely to be out on The Broads, sun beaming down, and to be able to stop the engine. All you could hear was the wind in the reeds and the birds singing. It was a change to get away from the hustle and bustle of the South East. No sound of traffic and planes. It was a nice time to reflect.

We hope you have a lovely holiday where ever you may be going and that you come back as refreshed as we did.

The House to House Collection raised £1009.12 . of which £56.96 was the sum of Gift Aiding, always very worthwhile. Many thanks to all Contributors.

This was my last year as organiser and I take this opportunity to thank the following people for all their help and support.

Tony Hill :- Treasurer for many, many years. Jane Nottage :- An organiser and collector also for many years.

COLLECTORS :- the most important people and many like myself have done it for a great number of years and now feel a need for someone else to take over. Thank you Counters too.

In the past Lunches and Coffee Mornings etc were held and successful they were too, but these also have had to be abandoned through an elderly and diminishing workforce.

So what is needed now is a new young or younger dynamic team!

What About It?

The House to House Collection is still Christian Aid's biggest fundraiser.

God Bless you all.

Since last writing, we have had the General Election and of course you are all aware Theresa May was re-elected as your MP. Theresa was overwhelmed with the result which hugely increased her majority and through your pages she would like to thank you all for giving her the opportunity to once again be your MP. She has always been there for every one of us and rest assured she will continue her work in supporting all residents in the Maidenhead Constituency even though she is now Home Secretary.

Council News

Maidenhead is again leading the way with re-cycling as you will have seen in the Maidenhead Advertiser. This ‘blue bin’ is a phased operation and you can see more information on this at www.rbwm.gov.uk . This along with the -4% Council Tax this year is helping residents, however we wait to see what next year brings due to all the financial problems and the proposed cuts in Government spending

The results from the questionnaire asking residents how they want the £500,000 as part of the budget spent in the Borough have been returned – improving cycling facilities, tree planting and extra grit boxes + a small gritter with mini snowplough were the three at the top of the list. This is part of the Council’s openness and transparency policy and offers residents to be a direct part of how the Council works on their behalf.

The Royal Borough is helping unemployed young people between the ages of 18 and 24 to enter the workplace and gain vital experience through the Future Jobs Fund programme. Even in a better economic climate, young people often get caught in the traditional Catch-22 situation of not being able to find work without experience and not being able to gain experience without a job.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 26 By working with young people through the Future Job Funds, the council can help them off Jobseekers Allowance and provide real work experience which can result in increased confidence, motivation and enhanced employability.

Young people are recruited from local Jobcentres and go through the same interview process as regular job applicants. Grow Our Own offers additional support including CV writing, job search, interview skills, social and behaviour skills, literacy and numeracy where required by the young person.

A new scheme in the Borough has been launched – Scores on the Doors - which delivers information which shows that eateries are clean, healthy and hygienic, helping diners to make a balanced decision about where they eat. It will also be an added incentive for businesses to make sure they are doing all they can to strive for a five-star rating. Establishments that prepare and serve food can be awarded from zero to five stars for their hygiene and food safety management standards. Zero stars indicate that major improvements are required and five stars that standards are excellent . With more than three quarters of the borough’s food businesses already having been rated, residents can check ratings online, by text or by looking for the purple stickers in eatery windows.

Of course there has been lots more going on in the Council and the above are just highlights we thought would be relevant to you. If you need further information on anything we can help with please do contact us.

Local news

White Waltham Airfield are having several events and you may be aware of increase in aircraft noise. 14 th /15 th August – Wings & Wheels is open to the public.

31 st Jul / 1 st Aug – Tiger Moth Rally, a fly-in for veteran and vintage aircraft mainly Tiger Moths.

14 th / 15 th Aug – Wings, Wheels, Speed & Steam event including a limited flying display.

4th Sept – Members’ Day, the Club’s major annual fund raising event.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 27 The Club attaches great importance to its relationship with the local community and is aware of the potential environmental impact caused by aircraft using the airfield. Consequently, noise abatement procedures are taken seriously and the Club’s own training aircraft are fitted with silencers. The airfield has three runways, each with a specific circuit pattern and the Club makes every effort to vary the runway in use as often and as safely as possible to reduce the noise over any particular area. Pilots with their own aircraft based at the airfield are encouraged to take free flight demonstrations of the circuit patterns and noise abatement procedures, which together with other relevant information, are also published on their website at www.wlac.co.uk . Aerobatic aircraft with their high performance engines and manoeuvres can potentially generate unusual noise so the surrounding area is divided into a grid system to ensure that aerobatic practice is spread over a wide area and in accordance with strict rules.

There is an Airfield Consultative Committee with representatives on it from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, local Parish Councils and community associations. The Committee meets quarterly to address any issues, including environmental matters, raised by these representatives. You can contact your Parish Council or Village Association if you have any concerns.

Concerns have been raised with speeding on the Waltham Rd particularly from White Waltham Village to the mini roundabout at Foliejohn Way. We would ask if all residents can please keep within the speed limit. A police camera base has also been introduced on the stretch of the road near the airfield.

That’s about it for now and we hope you all enjoy your summer.

Our kind regards Maureen Hunt, Hazel Wilson & Paul Etherington

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 29 Not Another Cat Story

Yes, I am keeping my promise! And not writing about cats. In fact, I shall mention no animals in this letter! Right now, it is school holidays here and Liz and I have a very special privilege. I expect all of you who have grandchildren who live a good way away from you are thrilled when the opportunity arises to have them visit. Our younger granddaughter has spent this mid-year holiday with us for the past three years and we count it very special as her birthday falls during her visit, in fact she is 14 years old today and we love her to bits. We took her out with another friend who has no granddaughters and so calls herself a “sort of” Nana and we had a very special lunch and then went touring around some shops. Ruth lives in Wellington and right now the wind is blowing hard and they are having lots or wet days. Here in deepest Otago (which everybody in the North Island thinks of as being in the deep frozen south!) we have had a 6 day run of cloudless blue sky days albeit with a touch of frost in the mornings. Why do we keep counting birthdays? Is it pride at just how old we are? Perhaps we wish we were a bit younger... or a bit older, perhaps we’ve stopped even recognising our birthdays. I had a special one this year and both my daughters and both my granddaughters flew in from Wellington to make it a very special day. In the Bible, the children of Israel were told by God to commemorate their nation’s birthday. It is called Passover and to this day Jews still celebrate the feast annually to remind themselves of how wonderfully God delivered them from years of cruel slavery in Egypt. Perhaps that’s the clue, we use our birthdays to look back over our lives. There will be some sad memories and some happy ones but hopefully we can see how God has led us in the good times and through the bad times. But birthdays should also be times for looking forward. After all we greet birthday people with “Happy Birthday and many more of them” don’t we. I do hope when your next birthday pops up that you can look back with gratitude to everything that is now past and forward with faith, based on that past experience, to whatever the future may hold for you. It may be sunny here, but it is still winter! Enjoy your summer. I’m not sure how many years ago it was when I never saw the covers come out at Wimbledon . . . so it must be summer!

By the way, in case anyone would like to write to me, I have added my email address below – feel free!

Don’t know nothin’

When Columbus started out, he didn’t know where he was going. When he got there, he didn’t know where he was. When he got back, he didn’t know where he had been. And he did it all on other people’s money. Can’t help thinking that Columbus reminds me of some teenagers who go on family holidays.
