Prelude Joel Hammett We Prepare The prelude is Our Community Gathers Rev. Dwayne Johnson & Rev. Janice Ladd designed to set the tone for the worship + Exchange of Peace service. It is also an offering from one of our gifted musicians. + Processional Hymn SOLID ROCK Many wish to listen My Hope is Built on Nothing Less and meditate during this time.

We Worship This hymn was written by Edward Mote. Mote was a carpenter who owned a cabinet shop. One morning it came to his mind as he was laboring to write a hymn on the 'Gracious Experience of a Christian.' As he traveled to his shop he had the chorus. Later he met up with a friend who informed him that his wife was ill, he was asked to call on her. It was his custom to sing a hymn and engage in prayer for such meetings, but he could not find his hymnbook so he sang this hymn to the man's wife. In 1853 Mote gave up carpentry to a Baptist in Horsham, Sussez, where he ministered for 21 years. He resigned in 1873 due to failing health.

5 Sacred Reading

From the delight of young animals in simply being alive, from children at play, from youth risking all for love, from the triumphs that follow long effort--from all these, faith gathers materials for her Temple to form a bulwark against the storm. ~ Helen Keller, 1980-1968

You must teach your children that the ground between their feet is the ashes of our ancestors. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth. This we know. The earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth. We do not weave the web of life, we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves . ~ Attributed to Chief Seattle (1786-1866) of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes from an address at an assembly of settlers in 1854. Cited in Prayers for the Common Good, A. Jean Lesher, editor; 134-135.

Never have we pushed so many children on to the tumultuous sea of life without the life vests of nurturing families and communities, caring schools, challenged minds, job prospects, and hope. ~ Marian Wright Edelman, cited in Prayers for a Thousand Years, Elizabeth Roberts & Elias Amidon, editors; 155.

Sometimes, you just need to take the bridle off, throw the skillet away, and let the panther scream. ~ Gladiola Montana from Never Ask the Size of the Spread, 82; adapted.

Exercises for Maturity & Transformation

God's care is like the wings of a mother bird, gently covering her baby chicks, keeping them warm and safe from harm. The image of shelter under wings is woven throughout the Hebrew and Christians Scriptures. What image comes to your mind when you think of safety, security and generous care? Perhaps you think of a hearth fire, or a cozy old chair, or a childhood treehouse. Imagine yourself now sheltered in this way within God's loving embrace. Explore what you feel in that secure and welcoming place ~ Spiritual Formation Bible, 342, adapted.

This week we remember Helen Keller, one who lived her life with a deeper security. Many of us cannot imagine life without the ability to see and hear. It is our human tendency to place our trust in our skills, senses, and tangible resources. Though Helen Keller was deaf and blind from age two, she became an internationally renown writer and speaker. Through her perseverance and risk taking, she became an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised, devoting her life to peace and equal rights. On a sheet of paper quickly list 10 things that make you feel secure. Don't over think this. Read the list and spend about five minutes in silence. Now, go back and prioritize the list from 1 to 10. Off to the side, note other things that come to mind. Where would these fit in order of priority? Is there anything on the list that surprises you? Are you surprised about something you left off the list? Now, at the bottom of the sheet, write a one or two sentence describing your definition of security. ~ Rev. Dwayne Johnson
