Jubliäums-LEA Lässt Stars Und Promis Feiern Medienmogul Beierlein Für Lebenswerk Geehrt

MTO 4.2: Schmalfeldt, Keeping the Score
Volume 4, Number 2, March 1998 Copyright © 1998 Society for Music Theory Janet Schmalfeldt KEYWORDS: ethnicity, feminism, gender, sexuality, McClary, McCreless, musical autonomy, new musicology ABSTRACT: This essay proposes and then explores the view that the most profound and beneficial changes in the field of music theory within the last decade have come about in response to pressures from without to relinquish the notion of music as autonomous. I ask anew why our field has waited so long to acknowledge that the creation, performance, and study of music cannot help but be implicated in both past and present social, cultural, and political concerns. My overview celebrates the inspired contributions of individuals who have recently demonstrated how music theory can embrace ever broader cultural contexts without at the same time abandoning the analyst’s commitment to interpreting the musical score. [1] For more reasons than one, it just doesn’t seem possible to me that only within this last decade—even less than ten years ago—our Baltimore joint-conference hallways were buzzing about Maynard Solomon’s paper on Schubert and the peacocks of Benvenuto Cellini.(1) That was in 1988. Only one year earlier—just ten years ago this month—did our conference promote the first official session of something called a Committee on the Status of Women. Even harder to believe, Susan McClary’s Feminine Endings hit the stands only as recently as 1991, also the year of the first Feminist Theory and Music Conference, in Minneapolis.(2) And the first AMS/SMT Conference to be held jointly with the Center for Black Music Research, inaugurated in 1980, took place just two years ago. -

FEMINIST MUSIC CRITICISM FEMINIST MUSIC CRITICISM: DERIV ATIONS AND DIRECTIONS By ELIZABETH ROSEANNE KYDD, B.A., M.MUS. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University Copyright (c) by Elizabeth Roseanne Kydd, 1992 MASTER OF ARTS (1992) McMASTER UNIVERSITY (Music Criticism) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Feminist Music Criticism: Derivations and Directions AUTHOR: Elizabeth Roseanne Kydd, B.A. (University of Manitoba) M.Mus. (McGill University) SUPERVISORS: Dr.James Deaville and Dr.Beverly Diamond NUMBER OF PAGES: vi, 180 11 ABSTRACT The tangled relationship of art, gender, and power has a long history. When militant suffragette Mary Richardson attacked the "Rokeby" Venus in 1914--the epitomy of the "eternal feminine"--she was making a vivid statement about male authority, female exploitation, and the operations of power in society (Fowler 109). Feminist cultural critics of the last twenty years have sought to unmask the gender and political ideology embedded in literature, art, and film--an ideology which has served to privilege the masculine over the feminine, severely constraining women's creative opportunities. The first full-length book on feminist music criticism was published January, 1991. Feminine Endings: Music, Gender, and Sexuality by Susan McClary was a long overdue feminist analysis of music ranging from Bach to Madonna. Its timely appearance coincided with radical stirrings within the musicological/music theory community as evidenced by the excitement generated by both specialized and broader based conferences which have acknowledged these new influences in their sessions. While many excellent articles have been published on the subject of feminist music criticism,l no effort has been made to date to provide an historical context, definition, and in-depth investigation of this topic. -
MTO 23.2: Lafrance, Finding Love in Hopeless Places
Finding Love in Hopeless Places: Complex Relationality and Impossible Heterosexuality in Popular Music Videos by Pink and Rihanna Marc Lafrance and Lori Burns KEYWORDS: Pink, Rihanna, music video, popular music, cross-domain analysis, relationality, heterosexuality, liquid love ABSTRACT: This paper presents an interpretive approach to music video analysis that engages with critical scholarship in the areas of popular music studies, gender studies and cultural studies. Two key examples—Pink’s pop video “Try” and Rihanna’s electropop video “We Found Love”—allow us to examine representations of complex human relationality and the paradoxical challenges of heterosexuality in late modernity. We explore Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of “liquid love” in connection with the selected videos. A model for the analysis of lyrics, music, and images according to cross-domain parameters ( thematic, spatial & temporal, relational, and gestural ) facilitates the interpretation of the expressive content we consider. Our model has the potential to be applied to musical texts from the full range of musical genres and to shed light on a variety of social and cultural contexts at both the micro and macro levels. Received December 2016 Volume 23, Number 2, June 2017 Copyright © 2017 Society for Music Theory [1.1] This paper presents and applies an analytic model for interpreting representations of gender, sexuality, and relationality in the words, music, and images of popular music videos. To illustrate the relevance of our approach, we have selected two songs by mainstream female artists who offer compelling reflections on the nature of heterosexual love and the challenges it poses for both men and women. -
